Small boats limit what can be carried aboard and gear that has multiple purposes saves valuable space. The Editor shares he has developed a pretty good system for getting his lapstrake rowing canoe to the water. The canoe alone is pretty heavy, close to 80 lbs, and with the sliding seat, outriggers, and oars aboard, it tops 100 lbs, a lot more than he wants to lift all at once. The Caledonia Yawl II has plenty of room for sailing with the whole family, especially with the open configuration. The side benches provide a place to secure inflatable flotation like boat rollers or, in this case, a collection of fenders. The kick-up rudder blade is an option that makes beach...

hutaro lives on Majuro Atoll in the Marshall Islands and needs a boat that will do a wide variety of things very well: carry his young family of five around the coral-studded lagoon, sit upright on a sandy beach, drift reef flats while fishing, navigate breaking waves, and ferry people and supplies across open ocean to distant atolls. For over 20 years, Ben’s do-it-all boat has been a 16 Montau...

We made it! You made it!! Six hundred nautical miles later-a conservative estimate-we’d like to sit down with you and take a look back. How did this rowing sailing contraption of ours work out? What went well? What would we do differently? Are we still on speaking terms? What’s the take-away? Well, there is a moral of sorts. We relish the thermal rush a hot mug imparts to cold hands. We blow steam till we can drink it down. First we have to cross Icy Strait at its widest and perhaps most difficult point. We wait out a storm. We wait for a wi...

I really like this jig. Have you made one longer? I'm wondering what the practical length of this could be, if I have two people to work it? This idea is so simple compared to some of the other more complicated jigs. Any limitations to this? Has it worked for slightly curved logs? Longer logs? Thanks

Thanks for this video. I'm embarrassed to admit I ordered these oarlocks 2 years ago (with oars too!), but I haven't gotten around to installing them on my boat. Mainly because I was trying to visualize where I should sit in the boat. The center of balance shifts as your video shows. I'm looking forward to the article. I don't have inwales on my boat, so finding the right spot to mount the mechanism is trickier. It looks like you can shift their position using the inwales, so maybe I should do that first.
