Making bonsai pots: Throwing small pots

We usually make round bonsai pots on the turning wheel. Smaller bonsai pots are made with a bottom. For larger pots, we only make the wall on the turning wheel. The bottom is then added later. Heike shows in this video how small pots are made in one piece.

We show how to make an oval bonsai pot using the coil technique (Japanese: Himozukuri). It is an old, archaic technique for producing pottery and is well suited for Nanban (= primitive) bonsai pots.

I have one large bonsai pot but I’m growing plants to attract hummingbirds not trees
How many lbs/kg of wet clay?
Heike normally don't measure how much clay she want to use. My estimation for such pots is 500-600g per pot.

Yes - if you live inside EU you can buy it in our shop (for english the URL is www.bonsai-shop.com/en/bonsaipots/premium). For outside EU we will launch a second shop end of 2024 with only the pots.

I am sorry - but the trees are sold out. I need for this video more than 1 year to show the results. Before I had time to upload the video customers bought the trees.

No - as far as I know there is no online webshop in europe where you can buy such big pots. You only can buy that directly from china in full container.

Dear William - the video has english subtitles. I hope this will be acceptable for you. I try to upload most of the videos in english. Some (not so important) will be in german. This is more easy for me. 1 video in 2 languages - maybe it is confusing. But the more fundemental videos (bonsai pot making, bonsai styling) I will try to make it in english. I hope you can forgive me for some videos in german ;-)

Dear Benedict - a Mercedes is know as a high quality car. If you want to buy a new Mercedes and the dealer offers you a new one with a small problem - no problem if you accept that. But - if Mercedes as a company is selling such car frequently - there image drops rapidly. So - as a company you should decide what is the quality level for your products. We want to make good pots with a good image. So - selling products with little damages ist not good in the long term. And on the other side - I learn a lot. This is for me more worth than a small profit. No problem - I will try it again in the next months.
@@DotPotCeramics hello I totally understand that u want to put perfection and give the customer a stunning pot thry paid for with your creativity your time and for thst customer to come back znd shoe your high end work , I just thought what a shame as the creativity and time u had put in as dometimes improfections are at times character but I do understand you , anyway hope I didn't offend I just genuinely thought what a shame and a loss but you must do whst you feel right , anyway thankyou for your video hope see more thanks Benedict 😊
Wunderbare und sehr detailgetreue Darstellung....eigentlich unbezahlbar.....für den Einsatz als Schale mit Bonsai....wird schwierig.....die Wurzeln des Baumes liegen später so stark am Schalenrand, daß ihr Kunstwerk beschädigt werde könnte.....ich hätte sie gerne.....als fantastische Dekoschale❤
Hallo Theo - vielen Dank für dein Lob. Einsatz als Bonsaischale: War so auch nicht geplant. Niemand würde mehr auf den Baum schauen. Mir ging es mehr um das Ausprobieren und Lernen. Unbezahlbar ? Bei 4 Tagen Arbeit kostet solch eine Schale natürlich mehr als 50€. Aber wir werden immer versuchen den Preis unserer Schalen in vernünftigen Relationen zu halten. Da der Drache aber 2 Risse hat können wir ihn nicht verkaufen (s. Antwort an Benedict). Viele Grüße - Detlef

Magnificent pots, the kiln must be immense.
Most gas kilns i saw have sizes like: L 5-6m W 2-2.5m and H 2-2.5m. So - enought space for that mideum size pot. I saw pots with 3m lenght. 1m or a little more is in Yixing not relly big ;-)

Price is similiar or higher. But Pines trees or juniper you are not allowed to import to europe.
I've never seen a Bonsai nursery on this scale before..........The Chinese market can support such a volume or are the trees sold world wide......
I visit 1 pottery in this area which made 2.000.000 pots per year. And there exist other potteries which deliver to the market. So you can imagine how much bonsai they produce only in this area.

Dear Louis, at the moment we sell our products since 25 years via our shop (Bonsai-Shop.com) only to EU-countries. Here export is easy (no phyto declarations for the plants, fertilizer, soil). But we plan end of 2024 an online shop for our pots (no plants) with worldwide shipping. So - if anybody is interested in - please wait until end of 2024. Selling to wholesale dealers makes no sense for us. There are 2 reason for that: 1. We send out a lot of parcels every day. If a dealer is interested in we can ship it directly to him. We do not need a wholesale level for that. This will only increase the prices. 2. Our own production is too small for a separate wholesale business. And for our other pots from China: For a retail dealer which is interested in huge amounts - it makes sense to buy it directly in china (Yixing). For big orders in the new shop we will offer discounts. So - I hope you can wait until 2025 ;-) Kind regards, Detlef
