How does a country fail to escape the middle income trap, given enough time? Because if you look at China, the way i see it, it's two economies conjoined. One is a high income economy, centred around megacities; and the other is a low middle income economy. At this stage, it doesn't cost less to hire a worker in Shenzhen, where most of the stuff is made, than it does in many high income countries! The high income economy keeps growing, while the lower income economy keeps shrinking. Can you expect a set of conditions, which would cause the high income economy to crash and the whole country to find itself in an economic crisis, firmly planting it in the middle income?

Why do you think the Government may adopt expansionary fiscal policy?

You made me understand this topic very well in just 7 mins..

for the layman couldn't it just be summarised as 'GDP corrected for local costs'? i.e. its a more accurate measure of how much value you can buy in a certain country compared to another country with a certain budget and therefore is a more accurate measure of relative material living standards than simple GDP - but I guess this lecture is getting at something more academic..
