Using tape sync to multitrack -- ancient analog wisdom
มุมมอง 1.1K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, we look into tape sync, a precursor to midi. This technique allows you to print an information signal to tape, and use it to sync up your gear. This has many practical uses everything from overdubs on a cassette to analog collaborations. 00:00 - intro 00:59 - probably-inaccurate history of tape sync and midi sync 03:36 - how to use tape sync 06:28 - setting up the track and print...
Using the DR5 as a midi controller and transferring SysEx files (WTF are those??)
มุมมอง 659ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I show that you don't need a keyboard workstation to center your hardware setup around as long as you've got a DR5. The Dr. Rhythm Section has many options for sending midi signals and routing samples to drum pads. Also, I get into SysEx files (i.e. system exclusive data) and how to transfer midi patches to the Kawai K1M w/ a program called MidiOx. I learned this technique from an...

    Any reason why the snares sounded so different on 90s tapes? Theres a particular distinct snappy snare sound all over Three 6 and affiliated artists, as well as DJ Squeeky. You probably know what im talking about. Is it really just a heavily processed snare from the DR660 808 kit? Kind of hard to believe. I downloaded a pack of raw samples from the machine to check and well, the only one that seems plausible is the 808 snare But how did they make it sound so different?

    • @TheToiletZone666
      @TheToiletZone666 หลายเดือนก่อน

      3-6 weren't using the 660, they were using MPCs i think, so prolly they either edited a snare sound on the sampler, or found a sound they liked somewhere. it prolly started as a 660 or 808 snare sound. w/ squeeky and other tapes using the 660, if you lower the pitch and shorten the decay, you can get it pretty snappy, but i think a lot of their sound is just running the machine SUPER loud into the tape deck so it distorts a little. a cheap hardware compressor was probably in use too, or in some cases, the tape machines have built-in compressors. also, the DR770 has a 2nd 808 snare which is MUCH closer to the 3-6 sound, but it didn't come out til 97 i think. i saw the 770 in a clip of DJ Sound tho, so i know some of those other dudes prolly used it too.

    Hello ! Can you please help me ? Can two 4-track portastudio style recorders be synched ? How about more than 2 ? I know from the manual they have SMPTE capabilities for synching with synths and drum machines. What kind of device will be required for the synching ? Thank you !

    • @TheToiletZone666
      @TheToiletZone666 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you can! If it's one that has a 'tape sync out,' you can get a tascam brand tape sync box that will do it. i don't know the model specifics, some of them can't do it, but the 688 can be synced to other 688s and i think some of the 4-tracks work the same. it might be hard to track down the tape sync box, is the only thing. if you want to get super lo-fi and old school, you could generate a tone with a sine wave through a whole track on each machine, then match the tone with pitch correction either digitally or manually with the pitch wheel. basically, look at some pics on ebay and figure out if the model you have/are looking to purchase has 'tape sync' written anywhere on it, then look for a manual .pdf to see if it can work w/ other machines or not.

      yoooo check the new vid, you can do some really crazy shit w/ it! also the power supply i use is from a Rocktron guitar pedal. I was able to special order one from them for about $20.
