How Fans Saved Star Wars - Laserdisc Bootlegs (Part I)
Over the years, the original Star Wars films have been subject to many changes and additions.
According to Lucas, the original cuts have been lost to time.
Well, sorry George. We the fans cannot let that happen.
This is the story of how the fans saved Star Wars.
This is Part I in a new series I'm creating documenting the fan preservation of the Theatrical Cuts of Star Wars. This episode focuses on Laserdisc Bootlegs.

Audio is from the semi-official 2004 DVD release of episodes 1-18 of Ну Погоди! ...
Stranger in a Strange Land - A very short 8mm film
มุมมอง 56711 หลายเดือนก่อน
Stranger in a Strange Land - An 8mm Shortfilm Over the summer of 2023, I had the privilege of serving in Slovakia for a second time on a mission trip. Before I left, I found an old Kodak "Brownie" 8mm camera at an antique store for $20, so I figured this would be a good way to test it. These are some selected scenes from the film I shot, rearranged in a more cohesive order. This was my first ti...

Nuclear War EAS Broadcast [Disclaimers in Description]
Probably giung to be mentioned in part 2. But the de-specallized release of the trilogy is probably the closest we will see to original theatrical releases.
While interesting, this leaves out much information. I look forward to part 2. During the first very long theatrical run, there were at least 3 different edits shipped to theaters. Dialog, edits, and effects actually varied between different prints. It was always fun to go see itvsfain to see what else may have changed next! I stopped counting at seeing it the first run away 15 times. I know I went at least another 5-7 times before the last closing show which I also watched. That was a sad day, the end ofcan era, when it would no longer be possible to go see Star Wars!
I just want to see the original how the artist intended. However this seems to be a rare exception case where the artist couldnt make it as intended. He didnt even watch the final cut, what?
Man this was an awesome video. Please keep this kind of content up.
I don’t know why there’s a bible verse at the end
I love 4:3 SW!
Should be able to create a daughter board for a laser disc player and preserve it as a digital signal to hdmi instead of outputting analog. You need a different type of nerd on this case.
I saw the movie in a theater . It was still on film . So you could not get the digitized version . And as the narrator illudes , those movies were destroyed . If I could have pirated it on to video tape I would’ve . Laserdisc wasn’t out yet . And even then , those discs were expensive . The whole system was expensive . But I wish I could get the original now . I’m tired of Star Trek . Paramount pictures saved theirs , and today you get the series in a set of CDs . But star wars disappeared . There are sequels , and clips , but the whole original movie disappeared from view .
Probably before all of your time's there were many BBS's all about Star Wars and even some about preservation. Being more a Hardware person I didn't explore it much; because I knew about the resolution factor; unless you have got the original 35mm(?) you're struggling. And that's why those bootlegs exist! Trying to download those files at 300, 600 or even 1200bps was... LOL Needless to say did you have enough storage?!? A complicating factor was that before Empire there was one announced 'clean up by Lucas' - small blip on the news and one 'talk show' before Empire came out. As a matter of fact when I saw "Star Wars" (1977) at the theaters UA 70 or UA 150 on Saturday May 28th; there was only one scene where you can or I detected artifacting around one Star Destroyer; less than 0.3 seconds but I saw it and confirmed it the next day as well as the next weekend. During the transition to 'higher speed' internet (above 2400 or 3600bps) a lot of these BBS's were either taken down (unknown reasoning 'legal'/'owner' donno) and not many transitioned to web pages or forums as we know them today. Even back then there were 'dark BBS's' that you could join and obtain these 'cut up' copies but you had to know someone to even login to those sites and that precluded most from entering them at all.
I have the dvd versions from the early 2000’s where you flipped over the disc and the original movies played. Good enough for me, am I missing something?
Thankfully people saved star wars from george lucas, although he killed it in the end buy submitting to the dark side known as disney
"Luke I am your father" I miss that. Would be nice if Star Wars restoration fans could find a way to hop dimensions and restore the line before it was vandelized by the MandAla Effect.
Stinky butt poo poo
I actually know/knew “Dr. Gonzo,” and was present when the laser discs from Japan were copied. The resulting DVDs were sold on eBay. Lucas Film sent several cease and desist letters to “Dr. Gonzo,” which ended the very limited production of the Gonzo bootlegs, but not before the cat was out of the bag. It’s crazy that this story is actually known. I guess it was a bigger deal than I thought.
0:50 my high school library had a copy of the Luke Starkiller early treatment, just like that depicted at 0:50.
I still remember the original theatrical release of Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. I miss them!!
You know that knight from Indiana Jones and the last crusade? You know, the one that is still alive after thousands of years in the cave. That's how old I felt when he said, "not many people know what a laser disc is" 😂
The fans care WAY more about Star wars than Disney or lucasfilms. That's for sure!
Sometimes I speculate George Lucas just wants to change his original movies so he can somehow avoid earning his ex wife any more money for those movies. Perhaps altering the movies and adding so much junk makes them a new product?
Its so amazing that we even have Vader narrating this video!
I happen to be the happy owner of a Pioneer Laser Disk/Karaoke system as well as the original laser disk of A New Hope. The only version I care to see.
With Lucas out of the picture, they should release the original cuts again, they would make bank I’m sure, if they are worried.
Nothing can save Star Wars
The "original" TR47 release is in fact Cowclops v1.0 and TR47 can even confirm that. The first one actually wasn't a collaboration at all, he just snagged a copy from me and then spread it around the internet. The second time, I was in college and flat-ass-broke but he coughed up the money for a better LD player and I had a better capture setup so I did that "anamorphic" (really just cropped and resized) V2 version. The first one was hilariously done by hooking the s-video out of a laserdisc player into a sony TR7000 digital8 camcorder, but the second version was done via uncompressed capture to a PCI card. Making LDs look good without technology that would come much later (or just, actual copies of the film to scan) was a brutal task and the best you could really do at the time was minimize the loss of quality in the conversion rather than "actually improve it."
Thanks for the clarification Cowclops! The naming scheme for that bootleg was hard for me to determine seeing that all the threads and NFO files were authored by TR47, but other users always associated it with you. Very glad to see you here!
I just wanted to thank you for your contribution to saving the trilogy. My FIL had his own company as a film producer and was so upset by what happened. I wish he was around today to see how people like you managed to save the theatrical version.
Jeeeesh. Super nostalgic. I saw star wars in the theater with my dad. My buddy's dad got a laser disc player when I was 12ish. We were not allowed to flip the disc over ourselves. Had to get a grown up. Finally, the bootlegs running around the internet. Damn, I'm the old guy now. When I was a boy....blah blah blah blah.
Cowclops LD->DVD rips standing by!
The unaltered original trilogy should be considered public domain by now. It's something to be watched for educational purposes.
Quality production! Especially for a smaller channel.
Harmy's bootleg was the best
infamous? dangerous? brave? pioneering? monstrous? ....Sheesh, the announcer uses way too many exxagerated, ridiculous and unnecessary adjectives when he talks about the subject matter.
I just love it.
Have you heard of "The Final Cut"? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that
I always thought theatrical cut meant the same as final
I LOATHE the cringe sub-title "A New Hope"..I don't use it...(other than to mock) ...ever... Star Wars ended in 1983. I have NO idea what this rubbish people think SW is today. Instead, I will sit under my classic Hildebrandt poster, slip in a DVD of 4K77, touch-up and re-card my old figures and beat-up Kenner TIE....and remember when things were not hot garbage.
I remember the Wookiegroomer edit from back in the day. 🫡
So Speilberg did change ET?!? I thought that was just a dumb South Park joke. But I should know that every joke in that series is based on reality.
If my memory serves me, they changed it back to normal in later releases. I think the special edition was done after 9/11 or something and people in the US felt a bit uneasy about violence in kids media around that time.
wow hahahahaha
Can more people sub to these types of channels. I swear ever time I see videos like this that take a lot of time and effort that have a relatively high views, the channels always have low subscriber counts in comparison. I have no idea why and kind of makes me mad that people don't take 4 seconds to sub when there are content stealing channels that have 50k subs.
The 2006 limited edition dvds contain the original theatrical cuts as extra content. They’re a poorer scan than the special editions but at least they’re not the special editions.
The 2006 special editions came with the original version
:38 Why does the film sound effect also sound like a scratchy record? lol George Lucas and such are complete liars and use the excuse that the technology just wasn't good enough back then. The real reason they do it is to change how history really happened. The elite do it all of the time, just like they did with MLK and even the JFK assassin. You can still readily find the original trilogy on VHS and super cheap, not the gold cover one, but the black and blue one.
I still have my Definitive Collection on Laserdisc, and did my own DVD transfer back in 2000. It wasn't the bit rate limitations of MPEG2 video that was the issue for me, I could maximize encodes fairly well, but it was the lack of a component output on my LD player. S-video was no substitute for component.
Adywan edits tops all..
Do any original theatrical prints exist?
The library of Congress has a totally original print of Star Wars.
3:10 "a sort of gentlemans napkin, if you will".
There are awesome GODZILLA LASERDISCS 💿
These videos almost never mention WHY George Lucas made the special editions. It was to retain 100% ownership of the films. After 20 years, they would have partially become the property of Fox. To avoid this, Lucas produced "new" versions of these movies, and in doing so had to change them a certain amount. That's why the original cuts were abandoned.
I’ve moved on to GODZILLA 🇯🇵🇺🇸
This film will always be just called Star Wars to me.
8:40 vcd ;)
Just Star Wars and None of that A New Hope rubbish!!
