Looks tame

Tom Pitcher 795 was the first gold top I remember in the first season at Smeathorpe, 1974. It was a cold wet miserable summer and two of the meetings were rained off. It was properly chilly up there on the hill above Taunton, exposed to all the wind and rain. Tom was a magnificent champion and won every race I ever saw him in at Smeathorpe while he had his gold roof. The world championship took place at a shale track in late 74 and Dave Brown took Tom's gold roof. Tom never won another race at Smeathorpe as a red top and I believe he retired at the end of the 74 season. I remember Dave Brown's first meeting at Smeathorpe with the gold roof. He crashed in his heat. Graham Bunter 528 was doing commentary from the old charabanc by the start/finish line as all the cars lined up for the consolation race. "We don't have any red grades for the consolation today," he said. Then Dave Brown zoomed out of the pits to take his place at the back of the field. "We still don't have any red grades!" Graham remarked to much chortling around the stadium. The 70s were a fantastic time at Smeathorpe and I shall always treasure those memories. Bless Tom and his orange cqr with Hambledon Motors emblazoned on the side. Rest in peace, champ.
