Yamaha CR-420 Receiver Demo
This video shows a vintage Yamaha Natural Sound Stereo Receiver CR-420 from 1977. This is a classic "silver-face" receiver from the late 1970s that has become quite collectible.
I demonstrate and talk about all of the front panel controls and rear panel connectors, including some common mistakes that people make with the controls and connections.

    Great video! But this didn’t help my problem unfortunately, I’ve been building this pc for around 2 months now and finally have everything ready to go and did the bios update. Being this is my first build I genuinely don’t have too much knowledge. I was able to get it to boot before for a minute but the vga light stayed on. Tried updating the bios now it tries to boot then once the cpu light turns red everything just shuts off

    • @GlennBerrySQL

      Depending on your exact model of motherboard and CPU (and your BIOS settings), you should be getting a small benefit from lower latency from the M.2 drive being physically closer to the CPU and from being directly connected to the CPU (rather than being connected to the motherboard chipset). You won't notice the benefit in normal daily use. It won't be "Wow, my system is so much faster now". But it would show up on storage benchmark tests.

    Thank you Glenn for this great Video. I am worried that maybe I ruined my new build. I put the flash Drive into the computers correct BIOS slot and pushed the Button and I believe it flashed a couple of times and then it stopped flashing but the light stayed on. The monitor did not come on so I pushed the on button on the Monitor to see if it was off and still nothing came on the monitor. I had thought the monitor is to come on while flashing the Bios. I had completely built the computer and never started it before trying to flash the Bios I still have never pushed the power button on the computer. I had only pushed the power button on the Power supply and have never turned it off as of yet. The light is still solidly on ever sense I first started it with the flash button. This procedure does not show anything on your computer monitor (by design). It is designed to work with no CPU, GPU or memory. The only indication you will get about whether the operation is working is the BIOS Flash LED, which will blink/flash for 5-6 minutes and then stop blinking. If that LED only blinks a few times and then stops (or stays on) that means that the system could not read the BIOS flash file from the USB drive (or that it is not the correct file for your motherboard). It is ok to turn off the power supply power switch if this happens (it won't ruin anything). I would suggest you watch the entire video again and then make sure you did not skip a step or make some small mistake. Here are some common mistakes: 1. Downloading the BIOS file for a different model motherboard 2. Not renaming the BIOS file to the correct name (SX670EE.CAP) 3. Not having the USB drive formatted with FAT32 4. Not having the BIOS file in the root of the USB drive

    • @GlennBerrySQL

      That is not really what CrystalDiskMark is designed for. It is a disk benchmark utility that lets you measure the performance of a drive in several different ways. This is useful for checking whether it is performing like it should for the type of drive that it is. For example, if someone installed an M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD in an M.2 slot that only had PCIe 3.0 support, the drive would still work, but it would be in PCIe 3.0 mode with only 1/2 the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 mode. They might not realize there was a problem without measuring the performance with a tool like this. I think what you are looking for is a disk management tool from whatever vendor made your drive to tell you what its health condition is. Samsung uses Samsung Magician for this, but every drive vendor has something similar.

    • @thesilentgeneration
      @thesilentgeneration 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Perhaps, but it was advertised in several different places as a way to determine if your drive is failing, close to failing, or how long the drive will last. This app is for IT pros and not us average users. The advertising was done in such a way as to make one think this app would be useful for the average user. Sort of clickbait.

    • @GlennBerrySQL
      @GlennBerrySQL 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@thesilentgeneration Advertised by who? The same developer who wrote CrystalDiskMark also wrote CrystalDiskInfo, which is a little closer to what you seem to be asking for. I have a YT video that shows how to use that program. But as I said before, you need to look for a vendor-specific disk management utility (that is made by whatever company made your drive(s)) to get the more end-user friendly information that you seem to want. Nothing in my video title, thumbnail or description is "click-bait".

    Hello! Thank you for this video but I have a question. I'm planning on buying a b650e-e asus rog strix gaming wifi motherboard and a sn850x WD Pcie 4.0 m.2 nvme 2tb SSD. What would happen if I connected the gen 4 ssd on the first slot which is a gen 5? Would it affect me in any way? would the speeds stay the same? Also I heard that in the motherboard mentioned above, if I insert an SSD on the m.2_3 slot, my gpu will run at x8 instead of x16. Should I insert my SSD on the 1st slot where the gen 5 is or should I connect my gen 4 ssd on a gen 4 slot? (m.2_2 slot)

    • @GlennBerrySQL
      @GlennBerrySQL 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Your SN850X would work just fine in the M.2_1 slot. It would still be PCIe 4.0, since that is the PCIe version that the drive supports (even though it is in a PCIe 5.0 slot). The M.2_1 slot is physically closer to the CPU, which will reduce latency (not that you will notice IRL), and that slot has a larger heatsink. It is also directly connected to the CPU rather than the motherboard chipset. If you only have one M.2 SSD, you want it in the "best" M.2 slot (which is M.2_1 on this motherboard).

    • @GlennBerrySQL
      @GlennBerrySQL 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Newsflash: This is a "Short", which can only be 60 seconds long. Whether the primary PCIe slot (where the GPU usually is installed) goes from x16 to x8 depends on the motherboard, the CPU, what is installed in the various M.2 slots and your BIOS settings. Many modern Intel motherboards and CPUs will go from x16 to x8 if you use one or more M.2 slots connected to directly the CPU. Most modern AMD motherboards/CPUs will not do that. You need to read your motherboard manual to find out exactly what happens to your PCIe lanes depending on what you install.

      You can put any PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD into any PCIe M.2 NVMe slot, and it will work. The standard is backwards compatible. Whichever part has the lower version of PCIe will be the lowest common standard that will be used. So, if you put a PCIe 4.0 SSD into an PCIe 5.0 slot, it will work, but it will still only have PCIe 4.0 bandwidth (because the SSD is the bottleneck). If you put a PCIe 4.0 SSD into a PCIe 3.0 slot, it will still work, but it will only use PCIe 3.0 bandwidth (because the slot is the bottleneck).

      That usually means that you skipped a step or made some small mistake. This low-level procedure is pretty straight-forward, but every single step in the process has to be done exactly right, or it won't work. These are the general troubleshooting steps: 1. Did you watch the entire video, and follow all of the directions exactly? 2. Is the USB drive formatted with FAT32 rather than NTFS or exFAT? 3. Do you have file extensions enabled in Windows Explorer? 4. Did you download the latest BIOS file for your exact model motherboard? 5. Did you rename the BIOS file as gigabyte.bin? 6. Is the BIOS file in the root of the USB drive (not in a directory)? 7. Is the USB drive in the correct USB port (the one labeled BIOS)? 8. Are both power supply cables plugged into the motherboard? 9. Did you plug in the USB drive before you turned the power supply on? 10. Are you using a USB 2.0 flash drive instead of a USB 3.0 flash drive (USB 2.0 seems to work better)? 11. Did the BIOS flash LED on the motherboard flash for 5-6 minutes, and then stop flashing?

I have a usb formatted to fat32, downloaded the bios update, have the renamed cap file in root and im not using the system power button, im just turning the power supply on and hitting the bios flashback button. It just flashes times and stops.

      @GlennBerrySQL 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Are you 100% sure you downloaded the correct BIOS for your exact motherboard model? ASUS has many models with similar names. Did you rename the BIOS file manually? Do you have three letter file extensions enabled in Windows Explorer? By default, they are turned off. For this exact motherboard, the name needs to be SX670EE.CAP. I have seen people accidentally rename the file to SX670EE.CAP.CAP. Are you using a small capacity USB drive (preferably USB 2.0)? These are all common mistakes/issues.

      @KevinMO91 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @GlennBerrySQL I ended up figuring it out. Even though the usb drive properties stated that it was Fat32, I had to clean and repartition it. Once I did that it worked.

    Can I do this with the processor installed? I’m trying to update my b550i board to accept a 5800x3d. The chip is currently in the slot and cooler mounted and I’d rather not take it all apart if I don’t have to. I will be downloading and preparing the file on a MacBook. Will it still work?

      You don't have to disassemble the system to do this procedure. Just make sure the system is not turned on and "running" (by using the case power button) when you do it. The system just needs to be plugged in with the power supply switch turned on. You can use a Mac to download and prepare the file. Just make sure the USB drive is formatted with FAT32.

    If you only have a gen 4 nvme drive, will it be any quicker in that gen 5 slot? Otherwise why bother?

    • @GlennBerrySQL
      @GlennBerrySQL 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No, it won't. The bandwidth is limited by whatever is lower (meaning the drive or the M.2 slot it is installed in). The idea here is to try to keep people from putting a PCIe 4.0 drive in an M.2 slot that only supports PCIe 3.0. Or a PCIe 5.0 drive in an M.2 slot that only supports PCIe 4.0. The second point is that people should look at their motherboard manual to figure out which M.2 slot to use, based on the motherboard chipset, the CPU they have, and what else is installed to figure out how the PCIe lanes will be allocated.

    • @garyrowe58
      @garyrowe58 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @GlennBerrySQL so why should I have my os drive in the slot closest to the cpu, when it's a gen 5 slot and I don't think it worth it to pay for a gen 5 drive? I'm happy with gen 4 for now.

    • @GlennBerrySQL

      @@GlennBerrySQL but then why did you say to put it in the gen 5 slot?

    • @GlennBerrySQL
      @GlennBerrySQL 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@garyrowe58 Putting the M.2 drive with your OS in an M.2 slot connected directly to the CPU (instead of an M.2 slot connected to your motherboard chipset) will reduce the latency. You probably won't notice this in normal usage, but it will show up in storage benchmarks. It is also what the motherboard makers usually recommend. Latency is different from bandwidth. The PCIe version doesn't matter for latency. The PCIe version matters for bandwidth. Storage bandwidth is less important than latency for most daily tasks. Bandwidth is important when you are reading or writing very large files. It is also very important for common database tasks that rely on sequential throughput. If you put an M.2 PCIe 5.0 SSD in a PCIe 4.0 slot, your bandwidth will be limited to PCIe 4.0 speed (which is about 7400MB/sec with four lanes). The M.2 slot is the bandwidth bottleneck in this scenario. If you put an M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD in a PCIe 5.0 slot your bandwidth will still be limited to PCIe 4.0 speed. The M.2 drive is the bandwidth bottleneck in this scenario.

      That generally means that you skipped a step or made a small mistake. Every little step has to be done correctly, from downloading the correct BIOS for your exact motherboard model, unzipping it, renaming it with the correct name, having the renamed file in the root of the USB drive, etc.

    Just ran through this step by step as this is my first build and wanted to point out an error that I had that others might be struggling with, as well as the solution. When renaming the file with the BIOSRenamer, mine said it was renaming the file to “SB650EF.CAP” but noticed that the file itself just said “SB650EF” without the .CAP on the end like it shows up in yours. I decided to manually add the .CAP to the end of the file before doing the BiOS flash but immediately got a solid green light after a few flashes. Went back and tried it with what the Renamer did, without the .CAP and it worked perfectly. Hope this helps anyone else out! Great video!
