Total newb on an XTrainer. Only second ride. First time on a motorcycle was three years ago.
My nephew following me and a friend following along to record. This is my nephew's second time on a motorcycle. The first time was about three years ago, on an XT250. My nephew did MUCH better on the XTrainer, proving it's a better bike for beginners than a mild 250 cc dual sport, in my opinion.

I rode both my CRF450L and my XTrainer around the pink and orange loops at Zars Ranch. This video shows my ride on the CRF450L and it's the fastest lap that I've timed, anyway. Never mind the commentary. My buddy and I have Cardo system communicators and talk a lot of trash to one another.

Just raw footage from a ride over the weekend with a Rekluse Radius X 4.0. Ignore most of the commentary, I was talking to a friend who was riding behind me. I do make a few comments about how much easier it is to ride in the tight stuff with the Rekluse.
The Three Twisted Sisters...... And Their Dirty Cousins
มุมมอง 3173 หลายเดือนก่อน
A dual sport ride of the Three Twisted Sisters, but with a twist. The Three Twisted Sisters ride in the Texas hill country usually ends up on most top ten lists of places to ride in the USA. I've done that ride many times on sport bikes and standards. It's fun, but one of two things typically happens. You get stuck behind folks on baggers going so slow as to make it boring, or some rocket rider...

It's not very high or steep, but steeper than it looks in the video. I have a massive fear of heights and falling, especially on rocks, so this was a bit of an obstacle for me.

Looks like a fun ride. Thanks for sharing.
Did you end up getting a CRF450RL? I think you commented on another video. If you're the one from Texas and want to try out riding on the property in the video, hit me up. Happy New Year
Am I the only one that can understand a lot of these guys while they're riding a dirt bike?I can understand the ozzy's better
Thanks for the review 👍
Where were you riding those trails? I'm new to the Houston area. Great video.
Zars Ranch in Floresville, TX. If you're ever going to spend any time in the San Antonio area, look up DBSA or Zars Ranch on Facebook. DBSA stands for Dirt Bikers of San Antonio. You'll need a club member to sponsor you for the day, then it's $20 all day. I'm out there just about every weekend. Just post up on the Facebook page that you need a sponsor and someone can hook you up.
I love the trail you are riding on. It looks like so much fun. Great video.
Where are you riding? Looks like Texas.... Looks fun.
I sold my FE501 to buy the 450L and it’s a better all round bike. Single track ,no problem. Highway, no problem. Sand and dunes , no problem. Reliability, well it’s a Honda! Satu Hati.
What is the name of the RV park you stayed at?
That’s the Pioneer RV Resort in Bandera. If you’re ever there, hit me up. I’m living there full time right now.
I have ridden The Three Twisted Sisters on my Tiger 1200 GT Explorer and enjoyed it. I'm interest in trading in my Tiger for a 24 CRF450RL. I really miss riding the dirt. Great video. I'll have to look up the route and put it on my bucket list.
Nice review 👍
Looks like a fun ride Thanks for sharing
Cool, would love to take my klr there
I’m thinking about getting a 450 RL and I’ll be mostly riding the same kind of trails you are on I’m glad to see what it does in that situation…thanks for the video
strange throttle "issue": maybe its only jetting/carb tuning/ carb exchange issue, (I do not want to push the expensive fixes) not a "real" issue? just trying to help.
I just went through the green trail today on my crf300l rally and boy did I get my money's worth. The last rain must have washed it out and now it's very sandy and rocky but I learned a lot and I didn't dump the bike.
Im 47 as well. Just got a 24 xtrainer last week. What a bike! Its perfect for me, I feel very comfortable on it.
Beautiful trails! I have talked to people here in Northeast, Pa. that have a 450L and tell me that they are not very suitable for single track trails. I need to add that the trails here are a ton more technical than what is shown in the video. Rocks, rocks and more rocks. Lots of loose rocks. Also lots of very steep inclines with loose rocks. Not trying to knock your point but just pointing out it is not really the same here. Again, beautiful trails where your at. Do you have any experience with the 450 in different terrain?
Nice flowing trails…no problem…perfect for my 690’also✌️tight, and technical is when it’s harder with the heavier bike
Scene doing the video, have you updated your suspension any more, other than springs ? That’s the only thing that I wonder about between the the other bikes , like the rr models is suspension. I ride a lot of sand and don’t know if the XT suspension or say a 200 RR would better ? Also would love to ride that 350 rr too.
Good stuff Justin!
Do you find it revs as high as a KTM 350?
Can’t say. I haven’t got experience on the KTM 350.
I like that bike but...I find it embarrassing that beta continues to offer those suspensions..
That's how they keep the price point low. If you want a racy suspension you're going to pay more you get the 300RR
Nice riding, just got a 19 450L and it’s the most challenging bike I ever rode, trails are awesome, where abouts? We ride in eastern central PA, it’s super rocky here, I like your trails better, did u change ECU?
Trails are in south Texas. I have the AIM ECU in my bike, with a stock exhaust, and a toggle switch to go from full power to an enduro map. The ECU was programmed by Taco Moto.
Very nice work. Safety first and no showing off needed. I’m still stalling mine uphill on big boulders and when trying to get a bounce over thick logs- But definitely making progress. Have fun brother.
If you would slow down you might find it
Yada, Yada, Yada. Out of breath standing still?
You’re slow, keep it will serve you well
Looks fun I’m saving to buy mine in 2025
You'll love it mate, just budget for an ecu
Really nice bike man
Great video! What brand of RX goggle inserts are you using & how do you like them?
The goggles are ESS Profile NVG goggles issued by the military and the inserts are ESS Sunglasses/Goggles-RX Insert for ICE, ICE-2X, ICE-2X Naro and Profile NVG. The biggest weakness with them is the fact that they weren't made specifically for the relative smoothness of a motorcycle helmet but a relatively rough textured military helmet, so the strap doesn't stick to the helmet but sort of slides around on it. Still, I find it more comfortable than glasses under goggles. I might put some sort of grip tape on my helmet where the strap goes.
👍👍👊
Great to see you do multiple bikes in one review! In Australia the 4-stoke Betas seem to be pretty rare. The 350RR looks interesting though. Was it the same frame size and height as the 300RR?
Yes, same size frame and all the ergos seem to be identical with all the RR and RS models I tried.
What did you think about the suspension difference between 300rr and Xtrainer?
Honestly feel like the suspension on the RR bikes, even stock, feels better than the XTrainer suspension, even after getting springs for my weight on the XTrainer. I haven't done any re-valving on the XTrainer, so that's next.
Interesting comparison. I have a '22 XT and love it after a few mods (including springs/revalving & gnarly pipe) but have a hankering for a 4T also and your 350RR comments have me thinking now! Appreciate you sharing.
For sure. If you can get to a demo day, I highly suggest it. I think most people liked the 390 more, but I know I preferred the 350. One guy said he'd prefer the 350 for racing but the 390 more for casual riding, due to the lively engine characteristics of the 350. I looked up the gearing differences of the 4T RS vs RR models yesterday. I believe that the RS has a front sprocket with 2 more teeth and a rear sprocket with one less tooth compared to the RR models. Perhaps that contributed more to the difference in feel between the 350RR and 390RS models I tried than I originally thought. I should have also tried my buddy's 390 Race Edition right after, but he has recently installed a Clake rear hand brake and Rekluse auto clutch. I think those two things would make it too different to make a fair comparison, not to mention that I wouldn't be used to the hand brake and would likely crash because of it!
@@jwaller1327 thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I've never seen a dealer Beta demo day in the UK, so will be a bit of trial and error doing plenty of research and hoping it works out like it did on my XT which for now I just can't get enough of. Appreciate your comments on the 390 too - sounds like I need to do a bit more research on that variant too.
I just bought a 450 😊
My 24 had the oil light come off and on for awhile, I ended deleting the oil injection after about 4 hours on the bike for my own sanity. Now I run a 50:1 premix
I have a tail tidy and i dont have a rack and i run tusk bags.I put brackets from Giant Loop on and used the bolts from the old bracket for the tag so you dont need a rack just sayin. Nice bike by the way got my 2021 RL used with 400 miles on it
Good to know.
I would like to offer a little advice for video. Put the camera so it can capture what you're riding through. It's pointed at the handlebars and that's just not a good view/angle to watch. If you can get a helmet mount that goes on your chin and get it set there so it will show what you look at and the trail ahead better. Hope this helps but it's a pretty good video just would like to see more of the trail. 😉
I got the 450x spark arrestor in mine, and currently working on a modified Africa Twin spark arrestor that ALMOST bolts right in. The AT arrestor is a bit loud, but the 450x has a SLIGHTLY deeper tone and a lot of flow. Would recommend that swap. Zeta radiator guards installed on mine as well as the handguards. Would also recommend those, will need to trim side panels though.
Looks like oil pressure. Wich is not there xD
Nice review. 450 is a great high performance dual sport with excellent suspension and Honda reliability; however, oil change interval and high-octane fuel requirements are a significant downside. BDRs, TAT, and most trail riding can be done on a CRF300L (low octane fuel and 8,000 mile oil changes)....The CRF300L has a great cockpit feel and reach. Great seatheight. CRF300l can do 70mph all day, but if you are regularly hitting 80's, you would need to sprocket down...
I previously had a KLX300, roughly equivalent to the CRF300L in most respects. When those two bikes came out, I got the one that became available locally first, the Kawi. My buddy had more patience and was an avowed Honda man, and several months later, he got the 300L. And he threw the whole catalogue it that bike! Every performance upgrade you can think of. He got a whole new shock and had the forks rebuilt, all set up for his weight. We swapped bikes a couple times. The Honda was nicer than the Kawi, and was the better bike most of the time. I thought the Kawasaki was a bit better in tight single track. The Kawi crashed better. His Honda had a tendency to end up with bent brake and shift levers and broken plastics. I replaced my KLX with a dedicated dirt bike since I was using it for single track 90+% of the time. When I started missing having a capable dual sport, I did consider both the 300L or another KLX. But in the end I wanted something more on the dirt bike end of the spectrum. The 300 class dual sport bikes are road bikes which can be taken off road. I wanted the converse, a dirt bike that could be taken on the road. The additional maintenance and premium fuel, to me and my use, is well worth it for the significant upgrade in performance and capability, on road and off.
In every way the 450L is streets ahead of the 300L, way better suspension, wayyyyy lighter, way better componentry, about 20 more HP, better lights, will do 70+ mph all day, more fun to ride, safer on the road as easier to overtake. Now you can't have all of that and 8000 mile service intervals, and frankly who realistically needs that - could do the Idaho BDR and then probably the Washington one as well without changing the oil - doing 1500 miles is fine, the manual 600 miles is overly conservative, there's absolutely no need to change oil that regularly unless you are racing the bike. The real beauty of the 450L is it really is a unicorn, you could do an enduro, you can do BDRs, you could do the Baja on it, you could ad a few bits, as you would with any bike, and do an actual rally and be competitive - you ain't seriously gonna do that on a 300L!
@@mikefletcher6595 All true! I love my 450L, wouldn't trade it for anything. I live in the oregon desert and change my oil around 1000-1200 mile range unless I do something real dusty. Amazing bike, amazing power, super fun!
Nice video and nice CRf450L you have. Wow, a 50-mile commute to work each workday. Must be a very good job. 🙂 I bought my 2021 CRF450RL used, too, with 614 miles on it and for a price low enough to do a double-take. It practically didn't have a scratch, so I think the original owner used it on the street only. I also think an aftermarket ECU is well worth the money. I got a Vortex one and ten seconds riding the bike with the Vortex ECU proved to me that just putting up with the stock ECU mapping (like I originally planned to do) just doesn't compare. To me, the bike feels best off-road going fast over rough terrain, at least 3rd gear or higher. Not surprising since the CRF450L/RL is simply a street legal CRF450X, and the CRF450X is one of the Kings of Baja. Sure, I also ride it down trails through the woods, but opening it up a bit on faster terrain always feels great and the bike excels at it.
I agree. Since getting a dirtbike plated is pretty easy to do in Texas, I would have gladly taken either the 450L or 450X whenever I got the L. Now that I’ve used the L to haul the bags and all that on a multi-day dual sport ride, I’m glad no X was available when I made the purchase. I love the beefy subframe. To me, the L is a 450X made street legal from the factory.
Nice looking trail; Texas?
Yes, Floresville, Texas
@@jwaller1327 My son lives in NE Austin and I am in AZ. I assume this is private land, is this a pay to ride type of thing or?
It’s private. I’m a member of Dirt Bikers of San Antonio club. It’s club property. Membership is around $200 per year. Non-members can be sponsored by a member for $20. It’s a bit of a haul from NE Austin. There’s Spoaks Ranch in Lockhart, not too far from Austin. I believe it’s $30 per rider per day and you don’t need a sponsor. But it’s only open on weekends I think.
Awesome Justin!
Nice!
Love my 2023 road legal CRF450RX
Are you in the USA? I believe they come road legal in some countries. I was able to get a CRF250RX plated in Texas with a little work. The close ratio 5 speed transmission made it not ideal for road duties.
Which bike were you coming from? Sounds like a Honda?
I was on a CRF250RX
What a great ‘realistic’ video. If it puts a smile on your face, that’s awesome! Not everyone is the greatest rider Kudos to you for being a great dad, being honest and just plain out having fun on a bike! Hope that kinda’ made sense? To me it was just a refreshing realistic video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! That was our first time to ever ride real off road. I'm so glad I decided to give it a shot. I stopped riding on pavement for fun, only street riding to commute, really. We ride dirt for fun almost exclusively now. The off road community has been great, I've made some great friends riding in the dirt. And I've learned a lot. I'd thought of deleting the video as it's almost embarrassing to see how bad I was in the dirt, but we all do have to start somewhere!
Love my new 2023 Beta 300RR! Rekluse clutched for the technical, rocky, gnarly, hilly stuff we do up here in north eastern Ontario Canada. Great bikes with a lot of character. A smart carb is in my future for next season. It’s snowing outside right now.🙄
I would not recommend the smart carbs/ lectrons / similar products. They still do require adjustment. Just follow the jetting chart in your manual and those settings will get you closer and will give better throttle response compared to the smart carb. I will say the lectrons/ smart carbs do help if you are riding in wildly different elevations but if you're not riding at 2000 ft elev one day and then 10k the following day, would not recommend.
I have a 2008 Yamaha WR450 and a 2023 Beta 300RR. I definitely prefer the Beta in the tight single track stuff but I love my WR for the more open trails. The torquey power and feeling of being shot out of a cannon is very addictive on the WR. My friend who is twenty years my junior and very fast cannot keep up to me on his KTM 300TPI when we’re on the open trails and I’m on my WR but when it gets tight he’s faster. Both bikes have their place and I enjoy them equally on the appropriate terrain, but not vice versa!
