Line Cliche Down-Up-Down Challenge
Ken L @ Pianote 2025 Jan
Pianote Student review submission
I want to combine two versions of a song (beginner/intermediate) that are in different keys into a single improv version. Can you point me to a method or some examples a chord change progression? My improv steps down/up/down in half tones based on Study No.1 Line Cliche indicates my playing level

Study No.1 Line Cliche + Improv
Written by: Pianote Song Study 2nd half improv by: Ken L @ Pianote This is a really simple and fun to play so I can see why its trending. I have jumped on the band-wagon with everyone else. Like some of you I've also added my own improv arrangement at the end.
Blowin' in the Wind - Stride style
Written by: Bob Dylan Arranged and played by: Ken L @ Pianote 2025 Jan This is a really simple song, except that every verse has a different variation. This made it both so much fun to play with a dash of frustration nailing the verse arrangement. Another Organ Music book arrangement with no rhythm. So I used the opportunity to try some stride piano.
Star Light Star Bright
Written by: A late 19th century nursery rhyme of unknown American origin Arranged and played by: Ken L @ Pianote 2025 Jan I found this music in my folk song book that had Puff the Magic Dragon. In back two weird pages look like a printing error. No song titles, just some lyrics, eight or nine bars each, six songs with no start/end boundaries. Amongst them was nine bars of a vary sad but beautif...
Doing what with three chords?
Arranged and played by: Ken L @ Pianote 2025 Jan Going retrospect... What could I play if I only knew three chords? Welcome to one of my improvisation exercises for which the goals are: 1) Tweak the rhythm/notes of an existing song but keep it obviously recognisable 2) Re-arrange a four chord song to three, maybe you can guess where it came from 3) Create something new 4) Bridge all three into ...
When I'm Sixty Four 2024
Written by: Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon-McCartney) Arranged and played by: Ken L @ Pianote 2024 Dec I'm heading off for a week so I have to post my unfinished "When I'm Sixty Four" for a 20th submission. At first some phrases seemed impossible to play. Eventually I worked out that if I got that LH rhythm flowing smoothly, I could then concentrate on where/when/how long to drop in the syn...
Puff the magic dragon - Simple version
Written by: Peter Yarrow 1962, from a poem by Leonard Lipton Arranged and played by: Ken L @ Pianote 2024 Dec Sorry for this long script as I'm logging my memories from long ago. I started to bash at the piano keys about age 7. I was shown a few songs like Chop Sticks but didn't really understand what I was doing. This Puff song was very popular at primary school which I pretended to play while...
Waltz from Coppélia
Artist: Léo Delibes I had forgotten about this song until I was doing a sheet music clean-up. This is far better than my earlier attempt. Simple but beautiful this was about 2hrs sight reading in effort. There were a few minor interruptions to the flow... but I need to get a wriggle on if I want to make 20 pieces for 2024 challenge!
Fürry Elise
Composed by: Ludwig van Beethoven 1810 Arranged by: Ken L @ Pianote 2024 Oct Hi all... has this happened to you? Sometimes I publish my improvised songs too soon. These is still more essence, more detail, more variation to extract. This is exactly what happened with my recent 40 Pieces song: Out of Phase Elise. I've been dabbling with it since and found more left hand movement and variation. A ...

James Bond Dr No
Written by Monty Norman Arranged by: Ken L @ Pianote After playing Mission Impossible it seemed logical to explore the earlier James Bond theme. With four distinct verses it was certainly more interesting and fun to play. With parts that are moody, building up, crescendo putting them altogether was a little challenging even though musically they have been beautifully moulded. You can of course ...
Ten song intros plus an Outro
Played by: Ken L @ Pianote In 2022 I was really inspired by the skill of David Bennett when he published his "Top 80 Greatest Piano Intros" in 2023. Recently David done it again, this time with a list of different 90 songs W-O-W. I thought I would have a go starting with modest but more achievable list of 10. 01) Twin Peaks theme song 02) Desperado 03) Don't get around much anymore 04) Skye boa...
More than just another day at the Piano
Composer: Linda Perry Made famous by: Christine Aguilera Hi all, I'm interested to know how often this happens for others? It seemed like just another day at the Piano. I'm not feeling well so trying to cheer with a little experimental improv. Then I heard a few familiar notes in my tune but not quite sure at first. I was at cross purposes with myself. Not wanting to forget what I was playing b...
Brahms Lullaby Improvisation
Composer: Johannes Brahms - Brahms Lullaby (1868) Op.49 No.4 Re-arranged by: Ken L @ Pianote 2024 July I though I'd improvise a brighter sounding version of this classic. Maybe the baby won't nod-off or go to sleep? But it's an interesting exercise to add syncopation, rhythm, and a few extra notes. Lullaby and good night, with roses bed light With lilies o'er spread is baby's wee bed Lay thee d...
