1986 was not a stand-out year for popular music. The top three albums were Janet Jackson's Control, Paul Simon's Graceland and Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill. Also released in 1986, was Frank Zappa's Jazz from Hell which won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, in 1988. Which is weird because all but one track (St. Etienne) were programmed on Zappa's Synclavier and are not even close to Rock music. I turned 40 years old in 1986 already too old for this shit.

I was 6 years old in 1986, but by 1989, at 9 years old, I was an MTV addict, listening to Guns 'n Roses, etc. And it's where I discovered my lifetime favorite band of all time, The Cure. I saw their "Love Song" video vome on and it was love at first sight ❤️

The commercials, thats what really sticks out. When ignorance truly was bliss.

I loved the top 20 countdown!!!! When MTV played videos!

I was 25, MTV was on when I woke up and when I went to bed 24/7. The only time MTV wasn't on was when it was time for pee wee's playhouse.

Every single one of those songs are iconic, still to this day, regardless of genre.

I was 12 in 86. 5 years later, I would meet Steve Miller back stage at my 1st ever concert. I was offered beer and drugs, but I was 17 and scared. Had him sign my backstage pass and I was out of there!

I remember thinking in 1986, at 14, how crappy the music had become. After seeing this, I realize how correct I was. There was a lot of garbage in the last half of the 80s. 1979-1985 had a pretty good selection.

When I was little all my teenaged cousins would all come over to my grandparents house and watch the MTV countdown every year. The 80s were a wonderful time

There's no reason MTV cannot be brought back and play all the same stuff they played in the 80's. they could start from the day MTV started and play it all.. There might be less videos because of commercials but who cares... they'd be millionaires!!! All us Gen X'rs are longing for days gone by and we would watch it incessently!!! I'd even get a vcr and vhs tapes and make my own "music video" tapes again! (I lost all mine and man I hate that I did).
