What is the Oblong Hoops gear set
The Oblong Hoops gear set is designed to be used in conjunction with the Hoops gear set. This gear set is a collection of oblongs, each of which pairs with one of the hoops from the Hoops gear set.
The oblongs can be used as a simple ring, rolling gears around the inside and making designs that way. They can also be used in conjunction with a hoop that fits snugly between the parallel lines of gear teeth. That hoop can be repositioned between each iteration of a design making for a setup that has precise repositioning rotationally and laterally.

Exploring incompleteness in two ways:
มุมมอง 331หลายเดือนก่อน
1) repeating the basic design less times that most possible. In this example the basic design can be repeated 8 times but is only done 3 times. 2) repeating incomplete forms of the design. In this example the design is done with all 22 petals once then each subsequent iteration completes 4 fewer petals. Made using gears from the Wild Gears gear sets: Compact gear set and Hoops gear set.

"you get a cat in the frame" hey, mine shipped without a cat! can I get a refund?
Enjoying your content! Wish I could afford to get all the sets and ship them to South Africa 😅
great art also i like the kitty in the background
Thank-you! Lemon is a very good kitty and she always tries to help with the art
One small error: The gear without a pair is a pentagon, not a hexagon, but cool set anyways!
Oops, you're right. Adding unplanned details will trip me up sometimes.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😮😮😮😮
I loved these as a kid! What are they called in english? I wanna amazon a kit now!
These are called Wild Gears and you can buy the Compact gear set here: shop.wildgears.com/products/compact-gear-set
Spirograph...still have mine
60 years ago...Was called a Spirograph
I had them in Iran as a kid, came out of mystery boxes that i loved.. used to get one every week almost in elementry years... and my english is fluent completely but my 4th Lang... Thanks guys!
Theres like 1000 different ones doe no.. I have ADHD I'm scared this will cost me a hundred or 2 atleast [ but prob less than $50 so thats nothing] & like every other "1 week life or less hobby that i spend thousands on to get the very best supplies and dont follow through anymore..." I'll do the same, but this is sentimental and cheap so i know I'll do that, but it's fine... like if anyone is held prisoner in my room/house/garage, they will not be bored a second for at least 4-6 months, lol😅😞
Seriously it was the one thing from the full page gear set I would have liked more of, a larger variaty of movable hoops.
That is why I make the Hoops and Enormous Hoops gear sets. As much as I would like to fit more of everything into the Full Page gear set I've done the best I know how to put a taste of as many options and features as possible into that one gear set. Its goal is variety and flexibility and to provide a good versatile core of gears that can be added to by any of the other more specialized gear sets.
Would pay more if cat comes with hoops.
this popped up in my recs. What is this used for?
Its for drawing fun shapes and making art. This is a gear set from Wild Gears, a modern spirograph; made to be better and easier to use. You can see examples of the art at www.wildgears.com/gallery.html
Great....another fucking SOY BOY who lets his stupid fucking cat do whatever they damn well please because he has no balls and no spine. Have fun sucking on your mother's tits this weekend like you do each weekend for the past 40 years.
I love this! Wish I could have something like this but I don’t have a 3D printer 😞
You can! I make them with my laser cutter and sell them at shop.wildgears.com You can even get a big discount with the coupon code HomeFun I recommend starting with the Compact gear set
I did something like this 3 years ago with my 50's spirograph. I used the outside teeth ring After that i refilled with crayons and it was beautiful. I like to get new ideas. I enjoy what you show here. Thanks
One set that is always on my table. Thanks❤❤
I don't know what those things are but I want some asap! This is pretty cool.
These are Wild Gears gear sets. Specifically the Compact gear set, and the Hoops gear set. I design and manufacture them myself. You can find out more (and buy them if you want) at wildgears.com Please let me know if you have any questions
Buying Wild gears has ended my socail life, my friends have forgotten me. I'm just sat huddled in my kitchen mumbling prime numbers and spedning too much money on pens. :)
@@ekowstevens4054 I’m glad to hear that your Wild Gears are bringing you so much joy and focus!
You could make a coloring book with your designs :)
The cat is a nice touch
Do you have any recommendations for holding the gear down without magnets? I tried tape but it didn't hold well for me
I recommend this video; I go into detail on all the ways that you can keep gears still and the pros and cons of each option. 5 Main ways to keep the frame in place: th-cam.com/video/i7MAyHa3gtA/w-d-xo.html
@@WildGearsCreations Awesome, thank you!
Loving these videos man. Keep them coming very useful
This is exactly what I've been wondering ever since I got my Wild Gears long ago. I knew there must be some simple way to use those factors but I never quite got it. I'm so glad you are making instructional videos again.
Cute cat
Hi Aaron thank you again for these ideas. I was wondering what strength are your magnets? Mine are 120lb which are great for holding the rings down. However I think may be too strong to use on the planetary gears.
My magnets are 20 or 25lb I think. 120lb would be very secure and far too much for the planetary gears, yes. Honestly a fridge magnet would probably be sufficient for the planetary gears.
Another great idea. This took a lot of planning and I’m wondering if you pick the pin holes randomly or are you basing your choice on a logic? and the rotating could get confusing. Have you just done it so many times or do you write out a script for projects?
That is a very good question! This is a core concept that I've been trying to figure out how to make a video about. You can plan a design a lot and some people do. But I like to experiment and explore without an initial direction to find design ideas. For this video and design I had the general goal of showing off the technique without over complicating it. So that gave me the first arc because a simple arc is the most strait forward thing to do with the technique. And I wanted to show a little variation in the design. I could have used a different colour for each step and that would have looked great but I would have had to keep track of more pens so I went with the other classic variation of just going up the ladder of pen holes. Then I got to the end of the arc and was like 'what can I do to show off repositioning the frame?' and the design that made it into the video was the second one I tried. Not because I didn't like the first one just that I messed up my first recording and was having trouble keeping the video short enough and the design that made it into the video was a bit quicker. To answer your question more broadly I'll start by just grabbing a couple gears and doing a few simple designs in a ring or two and see what catches my interest today. There will often be something that I like but want to make bigger/denser/confusing/more pointed/very colourful. Its the feeling of 'I like this, but can it be more ____' and then seeing if I can make it more ____. This pulls me down creative paths that I wouldn't find if I was planning ahead. It is all about looking at all the ways you can change one thing (pen colour, pen hole, gear positions, gear size, so many things) and exploring those changes and playing with them. For the rotating things getting confusing: partially it is just practice. But also it is knowing how to make it easier. For me that means adding marks to my gears to make it easier to track with part I'm counting with and finding the way to move the gear that is easier. I also find talking through the steps that I'm doing, out loud to myself helps me remember. Also, practicing being able to put a gear back where it was buy looking at the lines that you've made is helpful so that if you loose count you can put it back to the last step and try again rather than being hopelessly lost.
@@WildGearsCreations wow thank you for such a thorough response. I started with a Spirograph and then got one of your sets but then I began doing other sorts of art so thank you for making these videos recently as they have rekindled my interest
As the Japanese saying goes: "I would even borrow a cat's paw", meaning "I'm so unbelievably busy I would even welcome a cat lending me a hand".
That is such a delightful turn of phrase! I've never heard it before and I love it :-)
This is so cool! Thank you! Now, I wish I could get a set. Maybe in the future.
Cool I never thought to do designs with gears only. Great tip
😮 This is so interesting. I had been following these series with interest. One day I will be able to get one of these. Right now both parcels and post mail are so complicated in Mexico.
How do you keep it still on the paper? Oh I see it's on a clipboard. Nice
Clipboard in that one. You can also use weights, magnets, tape, or putty: th-cam.com/video/i7MAyHa3gtA/w-d-xo.html
I just ordered the full page set and looking forward to getting it next week!
So interesting!
You had me at 'parallel lines'. Shut up and take my money! 🤑
Looking to the next video.
I want to buy tools from Pakistan, is it possible ?
You can order Wild Gears at shop.wildgears.com Shipping to Pakistan should be automatically calculated. If that doesn't work for any reason please let me know through the wildgears.com contact page and I'll sort out a custom shipping quote.
Thanks!
Thank you! I've been doing magnets and a cookie sheet which does the job... usually.
Cookie Sheet! That never occurred to me. Such a generally available metal sheet. That is one of the great parts about these videos, I'm learning new things too 🙂
Related to the inner disc more so but what I used to do also was to cut a piece of foam a little larger than the outer ring and then use magnets to put it on top. This creates a little channel which helps the inner disc from coming out. Does this make sense?
@@dankelley1030 It does make sense. It is a thing I've occasionally thought about trying. Your comment has helped inspire me to actually make a prototype and test it out. I've made a first picture post about this on Instagram today. I'll make a video about this in a week or so.
@@WildGearsCreations awesome glad I inspired you.
Hello, this is awesome. The previous one with common factors was really good as well. I am a noobie here. Just wanna understand where one uses these gears? Just asking out of curiosity.
I'm happy to hear these videos are helpful. I'm gonna keep making them. Let me know if there are any topics you'd like to see
Thank you again. That will help me a lot.
Thank you for answering my question from your last clip!
How do you know which numbers cancel each other out?
If there is the same number on top and bottom you cross them both out Its just that. I just used a term from simplifying fractions and forgot to explain it. Thanks for asking for clarification
@@WildGearsCreationsI believe I got it thanks
Algebra.
Thank you for this instruction! I wait for my gears to arrive next week. Question: What means 2 exp4 x 3 (60.000) on the 48 wheel?
Those are the prime factors of the gear. They can be used to predict what number of petals the design will have. In fact, the video that I'll be posting tomorrow will be all about that
@@WildGearsCreations Answered already! Thank you!
Your cat is hilarious! “Attention MEEE!” Mine would have batted my pen out of my hand. Thank you for these reminder videos - I am working my way through the boxes in my craft room towards the one that has my 8 year old gears in it to see if I can justify buying a new set. It’s the shipping to the UK that’s the killer.
Nice set! It looks so complete and ready to play. I only own one metal set , the collector set of the brand we all know. It’s hard to get things like this to Mexico, where I live, as post mail gets stolen frequently.
if postal security is a concern you can email me at info@wildgears.com and I've got some shipping options to discuss that might work for you
@@WildGearsCreations thanks !
Hmmmm, you must have brought out a new set of gears because my doughnuts are clear Perspex and not coloured. Also there are no handy numbers on the various gear holes. 😢😢😢
Over the years I've done 3 major revisions to Wild Gears. I've up to version 4 at this point. Its been nice to be able to improve the gear sets every few years as I get better technology and tools. There is probably a lot of new gear sets (all with the colourful doughnuts) since you got your and there is the coupon code 'HomeFun' for CAD$20 off one order, no strings attached.
@@WildGearsCreations oh wow! I may take you up on that if I know I can see more “how to” and pattern videos - no strings attached there, either 😜
TH-cam is only giving me 360p no matter what I do. It looks horrific -_- Not your fault though
@@cianmoriarty7345 thank-you for mentioning this. I think that my phone has been recorded lower resolution for some reason. Future videos will be higher resolution
I've got this exact set on its way, and I'm looking forward to messing with it
thank you. I very much like this format: short, calm, precise. Please keep them coming!
Glad you like them!
Interesting that you are showing these again. Does that mean you will be demonstrating new patterns? I have had my gears for about 8 years (maybe more) and I need to dust them off!
My aspiration is to get down to regularly making videos about Wild Gears across a range of topics. From tips and tricks, to techniques, and also some art and design recipes.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
As a former spirograph user in my distant youth and now a Wild Gears user I really like these videos.
What a lovely su-purr-visor. I think I spotted them passing by in the "Technique: Gear in Gear Small Gear Rotation" video as well.
