The Battle of Macau | Portugal’s INCREDIBLE Defence Against the Dutch Republic
Welcome to this video on the little known Battle of Macau between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Dutch Republic. This was the worst defeat experienced by the Dutch in the East Indies, which solidified Portugal's role as one of the main trading partners in the region.

On 27 April 1521 Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, at the time employed by the Spanish Crown, sailed to the island of Mactan in the Visayas region of the Philippines in a bid to subdue the local population. After easily forming friendships and converting leaders into catholicism, Magellan was defied by one of the Datu's of Mactan - Lapu-Lapu. Lapu-Lapu's resistance and victory of Ferdinan...
VIRIATHUS: The Lusitanian shepherd that defied the MIGHTY Roman Empire
Viriathus was a Lusitanian warrior chief that was immortolised in Portuguese and Spanish folklore for his incredible defience of the Roman Empire. Born in 180 B.C, Viriathus would go on to rise through the ranks from shepherd to leader of all Lusitanians until his death in 139 B.C. This portuguese flag is rong. Stupids
The Dutch benefited from the knowledge of portuguese Jews expelled from Portugal, due the Inquisition, in the XVI century.
Portugal Underdog....???!!! Portugal was the First Global Empire in History changing the World as we know today and you say that Portugal was a European underdog. Man,your notion and general knowledge of the Role of Portugal in the History of Mankind is a little bit twisted. When Portugal reached Japan( with Brasil,African colonies,India,Malaca ,China and dozens of comercial outposts spread by the knowed World, england was still playing around with european neighbours and sending some pirates to pluder Portuguese and Spanish ships. Portugal has a colonie in china (Macau) since the beggining if the 16th Century while England only 300 hundred years later was able to estabelish one. Call Underdog to the country who Started All and changed the world Forever is a very Diminishing and Derogatory sentence, not to call another not so pleasent word.
The only thing the Dutch were good at, taking other nations possessions by force, they accomplished anything, they were a nation of parasitic merchants that were only good at piracy. Thats the Dutch legacy.
Subscrito, partilhado e.... gostei. Muito. All the very best, carry on the great work you´re doing ;)
We the Portuguese never had the hability of "singing" our deeds like for ex. the Brits. Our History is so rich that if any Hollywood director had the curiosity of learning it he would had for shore several blockbuster movies. But we the Portuguese, we are born from such a strange breed that even if we were the first ones on Mars he couldn't tell to others the same way it really happened because we wouldn't be able to do it so ... some are genious on writing books others find greatness on living them. Does anyone knows the life story of the Portuguese pirate Bartolomeu Português, the one that wrote the 1st "pirates code" later followed by the pirates John Philips, Edward Low, etc? Or, does annyone knows the life story of Pero da Covilhã the spy of the Portuguese king D. João II that by his own deeds changed Europe's geopolitical scenario? ... I could be here the following weeks because with almost 900 years of age Portugal has a lot to tell but we just don't know how!!!
Portuguese gunnery was as good as British gunnery. Had the Spanish allowed them free rein against Drake's ships, rather than trying to board them, the outcome of the Spanish Armada may have been different.
So funny watching all you peasants from shitholes arguing about shitty skirmishes between 5th rate powers in shitholes. Only one group of people proved we can dominate the planet.
This might be the dumbest comment I have ever read on TH-cam in the last 15 years. Congratulations on perhaps being one of the stupidest human beings on the planet.
There are so many things I liked about this video. First of all great topic and I’m so glad learn about Viriathus as I’m teaching my kids about history of Spain. It was top quality and very interesting. Excellent choices for illustrations and video. Your voice was easy to listen to and your music was not overbearing like some other channels. We also appreciated your subtle humor. I was sad to see that perhaps you are not still making them. Regardless, thank you so much for this wonderful gift to history living community! Wishing you much success!
I wish you had continued with this history channel. I enjoyed your stories. Thank you :)
No "celts" in Lusitânia!
He was probably born in Folgosinho, Serra da Estrela. And there isn't so much information on him as many YT "historians" want to make believe🤣 "schoolars of the time", the roman historian who wrote about him did it 100 years later. Anyway, if anyone has the oportunity to visit such places, do it. It will change you.

Great Portugal
They were just one of many Celtiberian tribes. It took the Romans 200 years (after the fall of Hannibal and Cathrage) to conquer and Romanize the majority of Iberia for a reason.

You should use the contemporary portuguese flag (white and blue), not the 1910 republican (green and red) flag.

🇵🇹By far the greatest navigators warriors and sailors in human history, none can even get closer! Portugal gave worlds to the world🇵🇹💚
Something that the Dutch were always stronger than the Portuguese, was as thieves, and in piracy on the seas, like cowards that they are, until today

We lusitans and lusophons never gonna forget what the Romans/latinos take from us, Hail to the lusphone world! Viriato live in every lusitan heart!
Hey, thanks for your interest in my country's History. You are Brit, I trust?
de Carvalho gave your accent away. xD
Great video!
The irony of course is had the Dutch succeeded in conquering Macao, the Chinese would almost certainly have expelled them soon after.
Exactly! The Portuguese are natural born diplomats… notice we were forced to handover macau. We shouldn’t have complied
Very interesting video though a decidedly odd choice of visuals. Your Dutch and Portuguese pronunciation is pretty good; Chinese, er, less so. Interesting subject, so more on Macao, please.
Viriathus was born in Loriga, Portugal. Loriga is the ancient Lorica (the latin/roman name), was more 2600 years old.
What proof do you have of that? Loriga (meaning cuirass) got its name from being a bulwark of resistence, but that doesn't mean he was from the region. It only means it was a defensive position that Viriato chose to make a stand against the romans.

Northen Portugal only and galicia and asturias
Wish we had more Viriatos
As portuguese I'm glad he lost so our ancestors could enjoy the perks of roman civilization, their aquaducts, baths, roads, hospitals, vibrant trade and security against raiders and pirates. They paid all those amenities in slaves and heavy taxes, though. That part was not nice at all.
Amazing thanks for making this.
All that fighting just to be betrayed at the end for some gold. Judas men
And then they went to receive their payment and the romans were so disgusted by them, that they also killed them.
What happened to Viriathus is exactly what happened to Herman, the German
It has always interested me how in all these Portuguese - Dutch wars, in Asia, Africa and South America, the Dutch could never come to terms with the often multi ethnic composition of the Portuguese forces.
In fact. Even admitting defeat, they tried to diminish the Portuguese fighters saying most Macau soldiers were Africans. That's some serious hatred and despise. Makes me think about those claims of the Dutch PM about the Portuguese spending all the EU money in "girls and alcohol", a few years ago... the prejudice is strong over there.
I think the dutches are the underdog at time era because they were like colonized by spain and just rebuilding itself and patriotical things mostly going on in the netherlands?
The greatest navy of all time, the Portuguese.
That was one of many battles and invasion attempts by Dutch in Macau. In fact. We the Macanese (half Portuguese and half Chinese plus the Portuguese community (not the Chinese one unfortunately) had just celebrated the 400th victory anniversary in Macau (it was supposed to be held in 2022 and due to Covid It was postponed to June 24th 2023. Thank you for this video❤
I would love to know Macau one day, and the remaining culture that had Portuguese influence. Regards from a Brazilian.
