Chris Durman is a East Tennessee singer/songwriter, journeyman musician, and librarian who has tried with varying degrees of success to play heavy metal, rock, bluegrass, folk-rock, old-time, R & B, doo-wop, soul, Americana, and that one, oh-so-ill-fated and ill-advised jazz gig. He’s been lucky to have played with, worked with, and/or hung out with some of the greatest musicians in East Tennessee and the world, many of whom have become his friends. It’s a shame more of their talent hasn’t rubbed off on Chris.
Chris has played in Lace, Oedipus Rex, Overkill, The New Left, Reenie’s Swinging Jugs, The Fun-Time Trolley Band, and the John Myers Band. Chris plays regularly with Exit 65 and Smiley and the Lovedawg. He’ll occasionally do a solo or duo gig with a friend, too, and he loves to jam with Folks, typically feeling most in his element when jamming with friends new and old around a campfire at a party.

“Black Muddy River” by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, played by Chris Durman, 10/27/2024.
I guess most folks who know me know how attached I am to the music of the good ol’ Grateful Dead. Some of the greatest times of my life have been accompanied by their music and many happened while I was following them and their individual members around the country with many of my dearest friends. They really provided a big portion of what I think of as the soundtrack of my life. Besides folks I play music with myself, there are no musicians that I’ve seen perform more than those folks who were in the Grateful Dead and, like so many other fans, I was saddened to hear that founding member, bassist Phil Lesh, passed away this week.
I worked up this Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter song a few weeks ago in the wake of the floods here in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. I went out this morning and recorded it by where the Holston River pours out through Cherokee Dam with the flood victims, Phil, and many of my old friends in mind.
Thanks for all the music, Phil Lesh. May the other side of the river you’ve crossed be beautiful and peaceful.

I’ve called Jefferson County, TN, home for most of my life and it’s always been a rare sight to see the spillways of Douglas Dam open. I see they’ve just got four out of the possible six going today so maybe that’s a good sign that the floodwaters that have devastated our neighbors are slowly heading downstream. I guess all of you who live around here in East Tennessee or who are over in North ...

This morning was a lovely, but fairly windy morning to be recording a song about the blues, trains, and the wind down by the train tracks in old downtown Jefferson City. I’m hoping I’m at least mostly louder than the wind on this one. I’m definitely not louder than the train that rolled through while I was there. I noted a hole in my repertoire last week and I’ve had a good time this week tryin...

We’ve come a long way since that first nationwide Labor Day in 1894 in making working conditions across the U.S. more safe, but we still have a good ways to go. For fans of the band the Grateful Dead, these days between August 1 (guitarist, songwriter, and singer Jerry Garcia’s birthday) and August 9 (the day Jerry died in 1995) are known as the “Days Between”, which is also the title of one of the last great Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia songs. I learned this tragic song a few decades ago from my friend John Parrott and I had always assumed that it was a traditional ballad. That’ll teach me to assume! Thank you very much,@@TennesseeJed ! You're right, I had to change the key to sing it so I had to figure out another way to play it that fit me! I don't remember seeing anyone in Skynyrd ever use a capo! I'm not certain they would approve! 😉
@@chrisdurman4695 I would imagine playing an acoustic instrument to an electric song would need to use some adaptations to sound familiar.
Yep, that's how I approach it,@@TennesseeJed. An electric guitar can play a single note on a single string and it will sound huge and sustain a long time. Acoustics are just a different bear and I feel I have to take that into account if I'm covering something that was made famous on electric.

Is this a Woody song or Arlo song? Everything on the internet attributes it to Arlo. Great song, I love it.
I love it, too,@@madeaman8446 ! I learned it from Arlo’s recording, but I believe that Woody wrote it. I see here (woodyguthriecenter.org/archives/collections/woody-guthrie-lyrics-collection/) that it’s included in the collection of Woody’s lyrics held at the Woody Guthrie Center. Adding Woody Guthrie to my search of the title, I’m finding quite a few places that agree that it’s a Woody song. I can’t get to my copy of Washington County right off or I’d go check there to see who it’s credited to on Arlo’s album. No matter who wrote it, it’s a great song!
