Hits and Misses! Homeschool Curriculum and Literature reviews 2023-2024
Hey friends! It has been a minute! I graduated a kid this year!!! Thought I would pop on and review our curriculum for 2023-2024 and also share our lit lists and book ratings for the year.
We actually loved almost everything we used this year.
I am planning to update with next year’s picks soon.
Happy summer everyone! A question for you guys:
What is on your summer reading list? I have The Well Trained Mind by Susan Wise Bauer as my educator book for this summer (AKA Poolside Professional Development 😊).

High School American History With Oh Freedom and Multi-Cultural Perspectives.
มุมมอง 5653 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is a look at the American History curriculum I am using for my son for 10th grade. We have done a lot of traditional US history in the past and I was thrilled to discover Oh Freedom! The book choices offer diversity and representation of the beautiful cultures that were native to America as well as those who came later. This includes voices of people of color, as well as children of a vari...

I wanted to share this awesome and affordable ($30) homeschool planner from Amazon with you guys. I love it so much! One of my friends used it last year so I was able to flip through it before ordering. I think it is great quality. Here is an awesome and new-to-me math curriculum. I'm breaking it down and giving a flip through and my honest thoughts. I think this is a great math curriculum for : •A child in grades 3 and up with gaps in math •A child in late elementary to middle school and up who benefits from pencil and paper math, a mastery approach and simple but thorough explanations. •A child that struggles with onlin...

Thank you so much for sharing your picks. Looks to be a wonderful year ahead.
You are so welcome! Happy planning to you!
We enjoyed Moving Beyond the Page for literature this year. Trying them out for science next year. Happy planning!💗
I have looked at their curriculum and it looks so good too. They have some great book picks
I so look forward to your videos. Your kiddos are right around the same age as mine and I think it is so hard to find great content on youtube for these middle and high school years. My daughter is a rising senior and my son a rising 7th grader. Your prior recommendations of sabbath mood sciences and sharing how you have used living books in high school sciences inspired me to really customize my daughter's high school chemsitry this year. We started with apologia but half way through switched over to living books and narration. Thanks so much for the inspiration to do that. Keep the great info coming!
That is awesome! My son has really enjoyed Napoleons Buttons and The Disappearing Spoon. It is funny because Chemistry is so incredible yet textbooks sometimes make it seem so boring! Yay for bringing wonder to your teens!
Love this video, and seeing some of the books you'll use. For biology, look at Guest Hollow. They have free online text with a lot of videos and lovely book choices...just another idea. Hope you have a great year! :)
I am going to go back and check her stuff out. We used some of her book picks for Chemistry and they were fabulous. Thanks!
Math You See is our go to. My daughter took it in 7th grade. She did Algebra I this year in 8th grade and will go into Geometry 9th. I discussed with her about which curricula she would change if we could and Math You See is one that she absolutely did not want to change
We love the Christian nature readers as well :)
I love your reviews and updates! You have totally sold me on learn math fast for my oldest struggling with math. I would love to see any in-depth reviews or flip throughs you do of the learn math fast books.
I'm so glad! My daughter just finished Algebra 1! We will use them next year as well.
I can’t wait to do Chemistry in the Kitchen by Guest Hollow for my girls :)
Yes we used some of her book pics and they are so so great!
Thank you for all this information. You are so honest with your feedback, and I love your goals ❤
This sounds really great! I've been interested in bookshark. And we have never read the who was books either because I thought the big heads were weird looking too. Haha! But the book you have looks awesome on the inside!
Thanks for watching! Yes the book was really good. I’m going to check out more of The Who Was books too. I’m glad I’m not the only one judging the books by their covers. 😆
Does it review former concepts? Like does book 2 still have addition, subtraction etc?
Like your video but I can’t support the Good and Beautiful because of their religious affiliation even though their curriculum looks good.
Did you end up liking the planner?
Yes! I love it. ☺️
Thanks for the beautiful recommendations! "Shadow and Light" sounds like it will be a good fit for us.
It's beautiful. Really great study.
Great video! May I ask does the grammar book(orange one) and the critical thinking books come with answers in the book for the teacher?? I am really interested in them and I think my daughter would enjoy them. She's in 10th grade but struggles in Language arts. Thank you
Yes they both do have answers in the back. We are still enjoying them very much!
Omg I’m convinced!!!! Just ordered for both my kids!!!! They have a discount for slightly damaged covers. 🎉
Yay!! We are still loving it!
Yes please flip through on the grammar book.
You are one of my favorites on here! Great video! I always enjoy seeing what other homeschoolers are using.
Thank you so much!
Yes, please. Would love to see a flip through of the Best Grammar Workbook Ever. Thanks for the update--always good to see what happens when the plan meets real life!
Will do! You are so right ha. The best laid plans... 😂
Is there any way to get the scheduling resource without joining facebook? I don't have a fb account. Thank you!

@@liveoutlight Thank you so much! This is SO helpful!
I love your opening statement and immediately subscribed! Thank you for this super informative video! It was so helpful!!! Looking forward to more!
Thank you so much! ❤️
im really happy i found your channel! ive finally found new amazing curriculum id never heard of before. this sounds so amazing i cant believe its real, woke school, what a concept
Thank you so much for watching. We are several weeks in and loving this History course!
Great choices. I'll have to read the novel by Yaa Gyasi. I hadn't heard of it. My son is 15 too. Some recommendations: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and Hidden Figures. I like the Young Readers Edition of both. Any book by Mildred D. Taylor. She has many. The Crossover by Kwame Alexander.
I am going to add those to my goodreads list! Thanks!
New to your channel. Great idea to use the ACE coding book and Udemy. I'm thinking about Oh Freedoms history program. I'm not sure I want to spend the money. I had a great chemistry teacher in high school. I hope your son enjoys the curriculum because chemistry is interesting. I had to take it and organic chemistry in college. Organic was 🤦🏾♀️ I never use all of anything. It becomes too overwhelming for me. I'm in SC too. Thanks for telling me about Mango. I'll get us set up.
Thank you for watching! Yes Oh Freedom is so good! But purchasing the required books was pretty expensive, I probably spent another 60 dollars on them. I am hoping to use it again with my daughter so I will save them. How neat that you are in SC! I am in the upstate :) I am laughing about Organic Chemistry. My husband and I were reading the Elements book and some of that Napoleon's Buttons book and they are both really good! I said to him "Why do some professors take something so interesting and make it so boring?" Ha! A great professor makes a huge difference!
When you did A Gentle Feast with your 9th grader, what are you counting the history as? 1 credit of world history?
Yes that is what we counted it as. 😊 I think you could count a half credit for geography in addition to the full world history.
I love the Well planned day planner. This will be my second year using it. I am excited because I feel like I have the hang of it now. I made a scrap book with last year’s planner. Excited to expand on that this year.
That is a great planner too! I used that one our first 2 years. I really liked the pull out shopping lists. So neat you did a scrapbook with it! What a cool idea.
I am going to use this for my 7th grade daughter as well. I like the pace and the conversational tone. I am going to have to add a few review problems each day to keep previous concepts fresh, but we are looking forward to it.
Awe yay! I really do like it so much. There are some extra resources on the website (free) for practice too! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for all the detailed information in this review! One small request, if you do something like this again in the future-- could you hold the page still? When you show the page by moving it up and down, you can't really see anything, and it is blurred if you try to pause the video to look at the page. But, again, thank you for taking the time to explain so much 💙
Yes absolutely! Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. 😊
Quick question: How did you decide where to start your child in this series? We have been using Life of Fred, but one of our kids is getting bogged down with it. He's a "math thinker," if that makes sense, but he needs something different for his learning style.(I know he has some gaps, but he catches on very quickly.) He is a rising 8th grader.
They have a placement test online. You can print it out or you can take the test online.
Hello! Thank you so much for a through look at the books. I really have been stuggling with choosing a curriculum this year. I have been looking at using MFW rome to reformation and gentle feast cycle 1 as it seems it would cover about the same period. My upcoming forth grader and Kindergarter really like hands on so I am concerned about how much adaptations I would have to make. Do you have any thoughts about mfw vs Agf?
I DO! I think especially for grades 6 and under MFW would probably have more engaging books. This is just my experience 😊 We did 2 years of MFW (Exploring Countries and Cultures and Exploration to 1850). We loved their books and still have some. They were more engaging for my kids than the picks from AGF. 😊 And we all loved the lang arts from MFW. Very solid but still gentle and fun. I hope this helps!
You do such a fabulous job making curriculum fit to your family! My son just turned 14 with a May birthday and since he is a couple years behind in math, we decided to keep him in 8th grade. We have been dreading high school....Apologia science, Notgrass history....they are so incredibly dry and boring. But you have given us hope! We will be using A Gentle Feast this year and instead of being a curriculum n a z I, I am going into it with an open mind. Thank you for your inspiration!!!

Thank you so much! It is a very adaptable curriculum too. Definitely you can take some books out if you need to! Or even sub out for ones he has more interest in. I hope you have a great next school year! Thanks for watching!
I was all ready to do AGF science in Form 2 as scheduled and then found your video... Now I'm not sure what to do! But I can totally relate with a lot of what you said. I don't want boring! I chose more textbook style sciences for my older kids and would really like a more CM approach for my youngers. But I'm afraid I won't love it once I pull it all together. I also like to plan for the year and not have to go searching for material midyear if we don't like something. :( Have you looked at Sabbath Moon for Form 2 ages? On a side note... we were using a Masterbooks science last year and ditched it mid year. We picked up TGATB Energy science and it was good, but LOTS of cutting and prep work. Several of the experiments didn't work, but thankfully she had videos so we watched them instead. I don't think I would recommend it or do it again, sadly. Did you find the Space one to be time consuming to prepare? I did happen to get the free download of that awhile back.
The handbook of nature now comes in colour - its separated into 8 books so that it's more easily transported out into nature.
How cool! I need to go look at it! Thanks 😊
We LOVEd biology 101 series…then chemistry 101…out of the box, layer out, no cutting innocent creatures
LOVEEEEEEEE learn math fast…Algebra 1 was amazing for our non mathy child. One lesson per week or speed it up if you need to. They author emails quickly too. Tried Saxon, TT,etc
I’ve run across this curriculum before but couldn’t find any reviews on it. Going to give it another look👀
I will definitely keep this one in mind as my backup in case what I chose for this year doesn't work. Thank you!
Thank you! 😊❤️
I really enjoyed this video. I felt so much more at ease with how to pick curriculum after watching. I'm trying to figure out how to homeschool vs school at home!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It really is so fun to incorporate different things for different kids. I try to focus on connection first and then go from there. 😊❤️
Khan academy has a math course for supplement.
Thanks for taking time to share. It is challenging to find reviews of materials for middle/high school students. I am interested in A Gentle Feast so your perspective was helpful.
What high school credits will a 9th grader will earn using this cycle?
I would count cycle 1 as 1 English, 1/4 fine arts (morning time resources), 1/4 geography, 1 world history (or you could give 1/2 World and 1/2 American History). If you followed the science plans you would earn that credit as well. I'm sorry I Just saw this comment! TH-cam comments don't always show notifications.
Great choices, love TGTB. Are you on Instagram?
Thank you! I think I just friended you 😊❤️
Is it a Charlotte Mason philosophy to learn about different time periods within one year? I've not got a ton of knowledge on it.
Yes
Yes it is! But I have to say we have done history both ways and enjoyed it. 😊
We love Life of Fred, the pre-algebra series is only 3 books and the language arts is 4 books. My son is just finishing up fractions.
My son is LOVING it!
I have picked this curriculum for my 9th grader and I am so excited..i am still watching videos about it 😀
I think you are going to love it! I'm so excited about it too! My son did one of the honors books studies to round out this year and we both adored it! I think so many people use TGATB because their stuff really is so great. Thanks for watching! 😊
Interesting picks, I will be doing TGTB with my 9th grader and we are very exited about it, i have seen so many videos about this particular curriculum and everyone was very pleased with it... I have not heard about other programs you mentioned so I will check them out for sure!
I love how you jump around! I do that too. :) But my oldest is 8yo, so it feels like a look into my future.
Thank you! 😊 I love shaking things up and I think it keeps the kids engaged.
I love your videos BECAUSE your homeschool is so eclectic! This is very much how our homeschool is also.
Thank you so much! It's so fun pulling different things together isn't it? 😊
