Be warned most of the video is just me rambling on. Additionally this is only the second video I have ever edited and uploaded. I'm sure they will get better over time
Overland Track August 2019 My equipment and packing

My first TH-cam video, decided that I'm going to video log my adventures on Tasmania's Overland Track. This is the first Video and is being published the day before I set off. In this video I will be discussing the equipment I am carrying and showing everyone how I pack my pack.
Just booked for mid May. Devouring as much related content as possible. Thanks for the vid.
Hi mate what camera did you use ?? And was that a nav on your shoulder at the start of the vid ?? Cheers
Fantastic videos! You have left me hanging - it was like binge watching something on netflix only to find the next episode wasn't available. I really appreciate you sharing your experience and giving me some tips to prepare for my own solo trip. I'm with you - if you wanted to spend the trip with 20 others you would have joined a group in the first place. The serenity of a solo hike is hard to beat.
Great video thanks for sharing! Did you dehydrate your own meals and take them on a flight or do you live in Tassie? I’m starting in December and I’ve been told there are restrictions on non commercially dehydrated meals.
I live in Tassie and dehydrated my own meals. There are restrictions on bringing fruit and vegetables into Tasmania. I'm not sure if that applies to self dehydrated meals, probably best to check up on that. Thanks for watching
you can bring camping foods (dehydrated meals) into tassie. also dehydrated fruits
Just watched your video, thanks for sharing. How'd you go with the socks/waterproof socks over the top?
24 kg - you'd still notice it. How much water did you carry?
Jason, cheers for making the video my wife and I who are ex vets are doing the walk this august, your information helped us a lot. Rw
Great rundown mate, thanks! I can tell you’re not Tasmanian by the way you pronounce Launceston though! 😂 Not that I’d ever take the piss out of a former pongo
Believe it or not, I'm Tassie born but spent 15 years in Townsville. Also was a grunt 🤣🤣
@@aveteransadventures2090 I guess spending that long in Queensland will do funny things to a person…🤣 Former pusser here, hence the pongo dig… 🤣
Only a pogue would bring a pillow. The way you fold those dry sacs suggests you were in the blanket folding corp
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Nice
Talc powder and baby wipes, says it all!
Yeah, says I got over weight and chaff a bit 🤣🤣🤣
Baby wipes ffs
You can't honestly tell me you never used baby wipes 🤣🤣🤣
Only a pogue would bring a pillow. Where’s your stretcher?
Please upload Part 3
Great vid. I have the same embarrassment about filming with others around. Now, whilst I'm more of a novice than you.... I believe your layers of clothing should be made of good wicking material to get the moisture away from your skin. People put layers on, then sweat, but the sweat turns to cold moisture after a while. It cannot heat up anymore once this happens and should be removed. I thought your clothes were wet more because of this process than the elements. Whaddaya reckon?
Great first vid mate. Comprehensive setup. Thanks for sharing.
I think it's great that you're hiking and documenting it, and I think it's brave that you can openly discuss how you feel about crowds and being amongst other people. Thank you. I have an 8-year-old son who experiences social anxiety. He actively avoids doing activities or being in situations where there are a lot of others around him. We often don't understand his triggers, but we respect that he has those feelings/concerns, and while we encourage him to challenge his own boundaries, we also seek out opportunities to get him to still do things that reduce the chances of stranger encounters. He's old enough to explore hiking and camping, so we're hoping those would be good opportunities for him. Keep on hiking and you've got yourself a subscriber today.
Good on you Jason! Really enjoyed seeing the walk, and appreciate the info. Glad you enjoyed the walk, and hope you found some new perspectives on stuff!
Great videos mate, hope you keep kicking goals. Keen to have a crack the overland track in July. Ex-army myself so can relate a bit. Good luck!
Hey Jason, are you planning on posting your Camp kokada experience?
We did it in July a few years back in worse conditions feet never got wet once... look into Sealskinz. Great vid btw
How fantastic are those MONT tents, Easy to setup. All the effort is in the design. And can with handle a fair amount of punishment
Great vid, done the walk 3 times, and once in winter, doing the walk solo in winter is a good effort.
Thanks jason, similar outlooks, enjoyed your adventure man
Loved your vids & totally relate to wanting to avoid people & do your own thing. Really easy to listen to. Very watchable 👍
Excellent vid mate. We're planning to the track. Not experienced so your info is invaluable. Won't be doing it in August that's for sure. Lol. Looks like the local animals like to use that boardwalk also. thanks for sharing
Great vid thanks Jason, heading off OT in a week and snow is forecast. Wanting to know what to expect - this vid was helpful. Taking two teens. Wish me luck 😆
Enjoying the videos. Is there a part 3?
You’re a bit of a natural mate. Bit of Leyland bros in the dialogue ;). Would love to hear your debrief on the equipment that worked and what didn’t. Noticed you rarely used the poles? Cheers
Gday Jase, great video mate.. where in Launy did you get the survival kit from or did you get it online? I’ll watch your other videos on the track, but before I do and perhaps you’ve covered it, but just in case; are you doing a debrief on the stuff that worked and didn’t work? Cheers, Ron
Thanks Jason - love this - makes me excited to do the trail!
I can assure you from first hand experience that a forced night in Kitchen Hut in a blizzard is not a comfortable experience!
Thumbs up man really easy to watch vlog style
Good job man enjoyed that, audio was really good to which makes a massive difference. Will be watching the OL Track videos over lunch tomorrow
Hahaha I laughed at the balls and powder comment. I'm looking at doing this in December this year (2020), and have really enjoyed your videos!
Great Videos Jason - would love to see a wrap up of your trip :) what stunning scenery in the snow !
Thanks for posting such a comprehensible gear list and packing guide. Very informative. 👍 My wife and I will do the overland when restrictions are lifted.
Great vid!
It's SO much more fun in winter! Nice work.
Great video's Jason. Totally understand where you are coming from wanting to get away from the crowd. There are many a time I have chosen not to do something in order to avoid the crowd.
Doing graded exposure therapy with a psychologist will improve/exterminate social anxiety.
Well done champ. I’m in the process of accumulating gear for the family. Great idea with the cheaper mattress that old mate had. I’d love to see you do another trip. Carnarvon gorge is amazing and larapinta is also on our to do list.
Hey Jason, Great Video and some good insight for my treck on the OT next week :) The jacket you have there looks like the Fitzroy jacket we sell at macpac, I think that the reason that you were damp on the inside may be because the snow was blocking the pores on the jacket which reduces the breathability of the jacket and therefore you get damp from your sweat. The jacket only has a hydrostatic head of 10k and the breathability rating is only 5g.m2.24h and therefore probably wouldn't be recommended for a high-intensity activity such as hiking as the humidity on the inside of the jacket won't be able to be removed as quickly as you are producing it making you damp. The jacket is also only critically seam-sealed meaning that water can get in the other seams that aren't sealed. This is a softshell jacket that is designed for winter mountain rock & ice-climbing and i think that if you wanted a rain jacket for hiking you would be better suited with a hard shell that has a higher breathability rating, I would suggest the traverse :) Happy Hiking!
Thanks Aimee, fantastic insight there 😁 You are correct on all points, I did a lot of research on return from the trip. I hope you enjoy the hike, it's a fantastic walk and the views are incredible!!!
It's a great video considering it is your first effort. I hope you had a good time on the trail it's a wonderful trip.
Are you just using the microphone built into the gopro? Which model gopro? Cheers :)
Yes just using the built in mike, it's the latest hero model, 7 i think
Great video considering like you said it was your first! I hope you didn't have to walk out any poop with you!? I am 100% for leave no trace but when it comes to number 2-ing out there it's perfectly acceptable to bury it, the only thing you need to hike out with you is your dirty TP (which you can drop off when you reach camp at the drop toilets). Buying a UL trowel would be better than humping it out (in my opinion).
Laws will be changing soon for cradle mountain and you will be required to hike out the poop lol. I also carried a pee bottle and would empty it each night at the huts. It's more a my preference at this stage to really try and leave the hike the way I found it or better. Unfortunately I picked up a lot of rubbish up there 😥
@@aveteransadventures2090 Yeah it is a shame about the easy stuff like rubbish! Crazy they are changing the law the hike your poop out! Thats pretty funny... easiest thing to do is hold it for the huts! :P
@@BeckTreksAustralia That's exactly what I did, but always good to know there's the option
Thanks for sharing. I did it in Feb this year and really enjoyed seeing the trail in Winter. It looks so different!
Love how you do your videos 👍🏻 well done.
What bus service did you use?
I us d wild island adventure hire. They pick you up in a 4x4 and drive you round. Good prices too
Great video mate. I’m doing the Overland track with my partner in February
Nice mate, you'll love it!!
We are looking foreword to doing it
Have fun on your trip, it should be a blast!
Good luck !!
Thanks Amber, I'll be thinking of you guys while I'm up in the cold
