The Bees In Your Backyard
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 ก.พ. 2018
Bees are arguably the most important animals on the planet yet most people don't realize that over 4000 bee species can be found in North America. This channel is dedicated to bees, bee research, and our adventures as we try to get to know all of North America’s bees.
How many bees are killed by cars every day?
I recently published a study about how many bees are being killed by cars every day on western roads. I decided to make a video to explain more about this study.
you can read the study if you search

bee expert reacts to the bee movie part 2
มุมมอง 597ปีที่แล้ว
I have studied bees for over 20 years and people always ask me about the bee movie (2007, DreamWorks). www.dreamworks.com/movies/bee-movie So, I decided to do a reaction video, or a series of reaction videos about the bee movie. I haven't seen this movie since it came out so lets see how this goes. This is part 2 in my reaction to the bee movie series. in this video I mention a blog post about ...

Thread-waisted wasp fixed action pattern with prey and in nest construction
มุมมอง 1.2Kปีที่แล้ว
In animal behavior a fixed action pattern is when an organism exhibits a predictable series of actions triggered by a cue. Wasps are a good animal to observe this in. In this video I show how a tread waisted wasp shows fixed action patterns in how she brings her prey (a caterpillar) into her nest.

the new Photoshop Beta has a feature to use artificial intelegence to add or take things away from photos. I wanted to see what it would do if I ask it to add a bee to a flower.

Which one of those two bees you mentioned make Honey? In Africa particularly in Ethiopia the ground nesting bees make better honey and they don't have the needle bullet to attack you.
How do I keep them away when I'm sitting at my porch?
This is a bit of a relief. Other videos make it sound like you have to remove the tubes every year store the cocoons replace the tubes and then put the cocoons out in the spring. I was very much hoping I could set something like this up and have the daughters of this year’s bees hibernate in the nest and emerge on their own in the spring. This is the first video to suggest that not removing the cocoons every year is a viable option.
Does this factor in time of day/season?
Nice! But also, not nice!
In my yard (SW Washington state), bumble bees have nested in the following places: 1) in the dashboard of a mostly buried abandoned car (long story); 2) under a thick piece of plywood which had been laying on the ground for a few years; 3) under cardboard sheet mulch (with no mulch on that part); 4) under a bale of hay which is protected from the rain; 4) under a flat rock which had been excavated by a mole(?). The species were Bombus melanopygus and Bombus vosnesenskii.
I lifted a rock and got hit in my thumb, right where the nail meets skin, it hurt for 18 hrs later, felt like a blowtorch searing pain, also hit me in the neck and ear, the thumb hurt the worst, worst sting i ever felt, dang yellow jackets
I have this hive I think are bees but maybe not? They don’t bother us but I do have dogs and worry.
I have “tunnel bees” or are they yellow jackets?
The cold isn't a problem - dampness is as it brings in fungus which is a killer.
The spring and all the other chemicals are with that Windex you do realize it’s the robin alcohol inside there. It’s working right otherwise known as Isa mobile people don’t know you can take K-1 freaking mix eight ball pool and save it now you got you sorry it’s all the way around. Had a brain fart there freezing.
until u accidently hose them with water and then try to rip a vine out thats either right above or part of their nest. they swarmed like a mofo. luckily i only got stung once. (reffering to ground nesting bee, not yellow jacket). just today this happened 9/22/24
5:52 I can’t believe the level of excitement I got when that wasp entered the reed in reverse ❤ Oh, I love being excited about the little things in life.
I mowed my dad’s lawn 2 weeks ago bees are in the ground they did strung me 3 times on my right ankle. Next 5 days my ankle feels fine but 6 days Wednesday night started to feel itchy I scratched it too much red and swollen.
I was enjoying your video, but why, why, do you have such annoying sounds in the background. You have a great voice and interesting content. That background noise ruins it.
This a concise but great and very informative video. Thank you.
A bee is a vegan and a wasp a meat eater
I got stung by a wasp in Switzerland and i didn't know i was allergic to wasps. I had extreme hives in 30 minutes. I took a medicine for allergic reaction and i was okay in an hour. However, after few Hours while i was waiting for your on the cobblestone floor outside a restaurant in Germany, i felt weird and decided to sit since i was losing consciousness. Before i could sit, i fainted and i fell head first on the hard floor. Even the hard fall didn't wake me up. There were many Germans there who held me and checked my breathing. In less than 2 minutes, the ambulance was there and i was rushed to the hospital. I was conscious but i was given very heavy medications. They told me i have anaphylaxis to wasps sting. I was given alot of medication and spent 2 days in a hospital. I've to carry a epipen from now on. Still waiting for the appointment to the doctor next week and hoping i don't get bit by a wasp in the meantime
Ok I have a nest with at least 5 bees. They suddenly came out of their nest today and were acting weak. They all found a spot to rest… one wanted to stay on the back of my chair where I was sitting. But hours have passed by and they still won’t go back in. One is now flying all around, watching the area. He looks as if he has the sh*ts because he’s pooping on my entire back deck as he flies. Not sure if he ran out of poop or not. One is sitting over the nest hole, one is on the opposite side of that hole, and two are having a stare down 🤣 their faces are so close that they almost touch and they’re just holding that pose. These are strange bees.
Thank you for sharing. I actually enjoyed the music. I found this because I watched a wasp just now in my backyard do exactly let the wasp in your video did. I looked up to see if this is a common thing, and found your video. Thank you!
If you get stung, immediately rub Benadryl cream on each sting. Then take Benadryl in pill form as well. Do not wait longer than 30 minutes to do this. Take at least 25mg of Benadryl in oral form. Rub the cream on as needed.
One! Justt slowly moving to me
I was recently stung 6 times that came out from under my compost bin.the stings hurt for days, the 1 on my throat caused my nose to run,i tried bacon soda paste which helped some, ice tooth paste and rubbing alcohol which all helped but didn't take away the pain.the bees were very aggressive and as i ran they flew after me.they seem to be small. When i felt better i set fire to them they seemed to fly through and not fall back into it.I was able near dark to rake through most of the compost and brought up a lot of comb but there is a substantial # still there.I will wait until winter and try to destroy the remainder of the nest. Are these yellow jackets?
EXCELLENT.
I’m so sorry for saying this but…I feel like if you would’ve gotten stung it would have been proper bcuz you kept messing with her lol. How annoying to have some human messing with your babies sustenance lol. All in all I’m glad you shot the video, my kids actually took a photo of one with a caterpillar (she took off my tomato plant I’m sure) on the side of the house. We didn’t know what it was. Thanks much! And please be careful in the name of science!! 🙏🏾🫶🏽🌎
In the bldg I live in (way up-state NY in the mountains) we have Day-lilies and under their foliage there are lots of holes and bees. They are on a larger size very pretty wings are triangular-ish. At any rate my parking spot is right next to one of these clumps of day lilies. They buzz around in the morning and late afternoon. Non aggressive I just about have to walk right through the flight path every time I go in or out. We have many of these clumps around the whole bldg as we also have many tall oaks and pine trees. I was horrified when hearing some of the tenants complain about them to the office. I gave them the info I had looked up and said they are not a real threat. 2days later... not one bee anywhere 😥😥😥 I'm so upset and aggravated at them. Bees are so important to the eco system.... it fails me that these Sr citizens aren't in touch with reality. Omgoodness there are times I guess you can't fix stupid. No matter how much you try. Moving on here!😊
Thanks for the explanation! I found one in my yard running second time. First time didn’t have a close look it ran fast, second time I took a picture and googled it. They are so cute and fuzzy
I work in lawn care and I’ve def seen these
skip to 2.31 for the answer to the question
I think you may be spreading a misconception about bees feeding on pollen. My understanding was they were after the nectar, getting covered in pollen was incidental (and a result of plants' reproduction strategies)?
Thank you for this good story. Best greetiñgs from Kyiv, Ukraine😮😮😮😮😮
I didn't see anything like this video before. Giving information about bee species. Just wow!! :-)
What about the pollinating wasps I find on my mountain mint? Blue-winged scoliid wasps? Their behavior seems more like bees because they spend a lot of time on the flowers. (Google tells me that they are probably getting nectar from the clusters of tiny flowers - and that they lay their eggs in grubs that eat my garden!) But they do not seem to follow your general behavioral rules. I found this link useful about this particular wasp. bugeric.blogspot.com/2012/11/wasp-wednesday-blue-winged-wasp.html
I've noticed a large (silver dollar or larger) hole in my yard and have been wondering for awhile what might be living down there. Thought it might be a snake or some small mammal. However, today I saw a solitary small yellow creature that looks like a bee though could be a yellow jacket wasp. But there is no swarm and I've only seen the one solitary yellow and small winged creature. What might this be? It doesn't look like I can attach a photo to this otherwise I would.
I live in yuma and only found one thistledown and i am starting to think i just lucked out. Ive been out looking for these the past few weeks after 6 or 7 pm with no luck. Found the bushes they supposedly mimic but not them.
That was helpful... Thank you!
Any new updates on if they worked? And what keeps wasps from using them? I don’t mind wasps, just wondering if they’ll be attracted or not.
Plenty of bees in ours. It’s june 1st in northern MN.
Really interesting! Utah has awesome species of bumble bees, by the way!
Murder hornet
What about carpenter bees? Hmm
Diptera vs Hymenoptera isn’t so hard, but when you’re trying to differentiate members of the SAME clade, that’s when things get fun.
Thanks for informing us about the dangers of plastic straws! I did not know they cause 90% mortality to bees! So PVC pipe is ok? I purchased a bee hotel online and the container is actually plastic. But the straws are cardboard. I hope bees will be ok.
8:09 Whats the Cardboard roll for, Megachile pluto? (I'm joking!! I know Megachile pluto Isn't native to North America!!!🤣)
We have Chlorion lobatum in singapore
all members of Anthophila are cute
6:54 actually you do have native Hornets Palaeovespa florissantia, Paleovespa gillettei, Paleovespa wilsoni, Paleovespa relecta and Paleovespa scudderi all native to Florissant Formation in Colorado, United States during the Eocene epoch (Priabonian age)
Without wanting to, I witnessed the nesting of these cute insects (in Italy we call them "Ape Legnaiola" (Xylocopa violacea). They had made a nest in my fireplace woodshed by taking advantage of a natural hole of moderate diameter present in one of the wooden logs. facing south. I discovered them thanks to their noisy flight otherwise I would never have noticed
In the case of my garden, I had placed the bumblebees' nest "drowned" in the bush made up of a lavender plant. Inside the nest I had placed raw sheep's wool. Unfortunately, employment did not occur within 2 years. I live near a small watercourse whose banks are covered with vegetation mixed with medium-sized stones dedicated to the consolidation of the bank, I had noticed that the bumblebee queens, at the beginning of the season, flew close to the banks in search of a potentially interesting tunnel. I will try the version you suggested leaning against a tree.
Great job! :-)
