Can Tomatoes Cross Pollinate
Many tomato growers stress themselves out as to whether or not their prized tomatoes will cross-pollinate and ruin their attempts at 'purity'.
The fact is however that this - though possible - rarely happens, as the floer is usually fertilized before it has actually opened!
This is a very short video to explain a little further.

How to store onions for the winter
มุมมอง 6704 หลายเดือนก่อน
Storing onions for the winter involves a few key steps to ensure they remain fresh and usable. Start by curing freshly harvested onions in a well-ventilated area for about two to three weeks. This process allows the outer layers to dry and form a protective skin. Once cured, trim the tops and roots, leaving about an inch of the stem. Store the onions in a cool, dry, and dark place, ideally betw...

These are also called Spring onions or Scallions depending on your location. planterspost.com/how-to-regrow-green-onions-in-water-or-soil/ This process begins by cutting about 1 1/2 inch (40mm) from the bottom of the onion and placing the pieces in a glass of water, just deep enough...
Re-Covering a Storm Damaged Polytunnel (hoop house)
มุมมอง 216 หลายเดือนก่อน
So how many people does it take to re-cover a polytunnel? Well this 28 x 14 foot tunnel was covered over with just just 3 willing souls helping to dig out the old polythene. It took only 2 of us OAP's :) to cover it over and pull the covering tight enough to do the job. Total work was done over 2 days - so a very productive weekend altogether! Now we are all ready for the growing season and get...

New sub. Thank you so much for sharing. I am attempting to regrow onions in pots from my balcony.
Thanks for subbing!
@@Planterspost I am learning how to grow vegetables from pots. Your channel is good. Have a wonderful day. 😇
Learned about outdoor mice once I decided to plant beans. Ha!
Just like I did!
Where should I keep it to grow? outside or inside? advise please 🙏
Outside even under a polytunnel or cloche in cool weather
@@Planterspost thank you 🙏
I’m grateful! Thank you for sharing!!!
You are so welcome
Thank you!
You're very welcome!
I’m loving planting sweet tater slips in these. For regular taters I seasons the bales and break them apart and use about 12 of them to plant about 50 plants. I hill them with more seasoned straw. Amazing
Great tip thanks !
When do you know they’re ready to dig out?
Just treat them as you would when growing regular onions and harvest them when they are full grown.
Do you recondition the old bales before planting?
I usually just add some good compost and perhaps a slow feed such as bonemeal to the old bales. Feeding throughout the season is usually required to get the best results.
Shows that just 2 willing souls can re cover a polytunnel over a weekend!
This helped me a lot. Thank you!!!
Glad it helped!
Hi... how deep should we allow the soil to be for an onion
Onions can grow in very shallow soil, but I would choose to grow in 3 inches minimum depth.
my little onion has two tiny stems, should i peel it right away or wait until they’re bigger?
Probably best to do it now. You may well discover more seperations as you unpeel according to the video :)
Thank you
You're welcome
thank you! this video was a great help! :o)

Hi! I’m going to try to do this with the sprouted onion from my pantry for the first time, so thank you for your videos! Should I keep the sprouted onions inside the house and will they be smelly as they grow? Or can I plant them outside in indirect sun, but I’m afraid the deer will eat it, our garlic and onions appetizing for the deer to eat, asking because they ate all my flowers and plants this winter!
Onions are best planted outdoors in shady areas. Grown inside they will smell (as onions do) and are unlikely to grow well. They are a cool weather vegetable that is prone to sprout or 'bolt' if it get too warm or cold for them. Best between 68-77 F
Do you get more onions or just seeds?.
Usually about 3 onion plants per sprouted onion
This is very cool thanks!
Glad you like it!
Very useful! Thanks!
Thank you for showing me how to plant my onion
Any time
This video is so helpful!! Thank you 😀
Glad it was helpful!
My sprouted onion is the same color
Peel onion,split the bulb,put into in dirt👍
how long before you harvest?
I've done this with scallions, and it worked. I have a sprouted sweet onion. I'm going to try and grow it, but since right now it is the middle of January I'll have to pot it and place in a window. If nothing else it will be a science experiment.
Will the planted piece form a new onion or just go to seed?
It will form a full onion but perhaps smaller than the original.
Straw for feral cat beds
I picked up hay for my garden instead of straw by mistake. Got it now. Thanks!
This is awesome! Thank you so much for your onion sprout tutorial! And also thank you for recommending it as a project for my kid before I tore into it myself!😂 My son's 7 and I think he's gonna love it!
You are so welcome!

Welcome!
I can’t plant mine in the ground, but would it be fine to plant it in a small pot? Or should I get an extra large pot?
Rather than a pot, why not try a 'potato sack'? Add a few inches to the bottom then 2-3 potatoes. Cover with a couple of inches only. As the plants grow up through the soil, continue to cover just leaving a few leaves sticking out. Continue this to the top of the sack. The potatoes will grow all the way down the shaw and give you a good harvest. Its similar to growing in a cardboard box. Check out my article here..planterspost.com/growing-potatoes-in-a-cardboard-box/
@@Planterspost oh okay thank you so much! 🙏🏼
Thank you!
Welcome!
Planted mine, how often do I water them? I didn't peel back that much, onions were still hard...red onions...just planted as it is still round and hard jnto soil with sprigs above soil...any advice?
that's so simple and easy to understand - thank you! :)
Glad it was helpful!
You're the first person who divided up the onion to get multiple onions... I wasn't sure how to divide the roots ... please let me know if you have any ideas... thanks
Hi, You should find that the roots will divide naturally with the onion bulbs when you seperate them
What kind of fertilizer do you put on the bales of straw and do you add soil to them
You need to add a high nitrogen 7+ fertilizer such as lawn fertilizer. Be careful that it does not contain weed or moss control. As for soil, you can cover the bale especially if it is surrounded with timber as in this example, or more commonly, you can dig pockets into the bale to plant your seedlings in and give them a good start. check out this article for more complete instructions... planterspost.com/straw-bale-gardening-complete/
Google bed... 😂😂😂😂
Congrats! I wish you get a super successful garden this season as well!
Us too!
Can you plant the whole sprouted onion rather than dividing it?
Best info on the difference. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Will I get more by splitting them like this, or just plant the whole onion ?
Yes. If yu just plant the whole onion then they will grow in close contact and will not form properly.
How big of a container should we use if we plan to use a container?
It does not have to be a large container. An onion only needs a few inches of space all around, and will grow in only 3-4 inches of soil if needs be.
@Planterspost oh ok cool! 👍 thanks
Do we put the glass of water with onions in a specific place, or is it good to be anywhere?
Best to put on a window cill or anywhere where they have even indirect sunlight
@@Planterspost thanks so much
Wanted to reach out and thank you for recommending it as something fun to do with kids! My son is only 16mos old (so obviously didn’t help with the knife) but was so intrigued by the whole process and was tickled pink when I let him put the starts in the water! 👍🏻 Thanks again, I look forward to watching more of your videos as my backyard garden beds are built and filled!!!
That's great. My wife's nursery kids love it as well :)
pretty sure black currants fruit from 2nd year wood... in other words the buds it sets the previous year bare the fruit. I trim my currants after I harvest them so they have time to set more buds before the next season, even still the yields are worse the year after a trim back.
Some farmers are spraying their wheat fields with round up before harvesting. Be careful what you use in your garden. Be careful what you eat also!!!
Thankyou
You’re welcome 😊
Great video, very instructive. thanks from Senegal (west Africa). Where are you from?
Glad you like :)
