1. Narrow down outfit styles FIRST! This is the part so many people miss before moving on to inspiration. (And trust me it will make a HUGE difference). You need to narrow down the general style you lean towards to 2-3 styles. Here are some style types to research and see which ones you like: Boho Old Money/Classic Girly/Feminine Gothic Eclectic Hipster Grunge Athletic Street Preppy Vintage Chic 2. Find patterns in your existing wardrobe: You may already have a hunch about what you like to wear. If you took a peak at my closet and sorted out the pieces I reached for the most you’d find a lot of neutrals, puffy sleeves, and classic silhouettes. I also learned that I just about never touched my colorful printed tops even though I loved them. This gave me the insight that I either needed to create outfits around those pieces so I’d actually wear them, or minimize the amount I purchase them as they weren’t really my go-to. 3. Find inspiration + How to build your outfits from them! Ok now that you have your top 2-3 styles is when we can start gathering inspiration. I won’t get too repetitive on making a mood board/using Pinterest like everyone suggests. Instead, I want to give you some actionable steps on how to create these images into outfits you’ll actually wear. - Gather 25 images of your favorite outfits - Identify patterns among the images (colors, fabric forms, accessory types, necklines, etc) - Create a list and shop for these reoccurring items that you may be missing in your closet! 4. Don’t make these mistakes! These are some easy fixes to elevate your outfit: 1. When wearing shorts or a skirt it is more flattering to wear open-toed shoes rather than closed because it doesn’t visually cut you. These black strappy sandals are a great way of dressing down this outfit and ties the black vest together. 2. When wearing dark colors on top and light on the bottom I like to balance the look by removing visual weight off the top by tying my hair up. This automatically highlights the v-neck and makes the outfit feel better. 3. The pre-portions of the purse you pick are important. By switching to a cross-body not only does it continue the casual look I’m building, but the smaller bag proportions are more flattering with this outfit. Bonus: By matching the color of the bag to your outfit it will blend seamlessly rather than creating a visual cut in your outfit. 4. A few accessories can go a long way! By adding some gold rings, earrings, and a necklace I pulled in more of the elegant vibe the vest gives off helping to complete the look. Want to elevate your style? Turtleneck style tip: You will look 100 times better if you fold your turtleneck to the right height. My rule of thumb is to leave at least a half inch of your neck exposed. This is especially helpful if you have a short neck or a round face. This small change can elongate your figure and keep things looking proportional rather than feeling swallowed up by your turtleneck!
