It was the trip of a lifetime for us. We booked it over 2 and half years ago. Then the pandemic hit. Now we want to share it with the world. Canada is an amazing, beautiful and vast country. We got to see much of it from ground level from the Greater Toronto area through Northern Ontario across the Prairies, pass through the Rockies and then along the Fraser Valley to Vancouver. All from the comfort and safety of VIA Rail's "The Canadian".
Taking VIA Rail's "The Ocean" Montreal to Halifax
The Ocean is one of the oldest continually operating train routes in North America. We took it at the end of April so we could attend the Halifax Comedy Festival.
As usual the service, accommodation and food on this VIA Rail overnight train is amazing. The dining car is first class. Take a few minutes to join us on this fun overnight trip.

Taking the Train from Sault Ste Marie to the Agawa Canyon.
มุมมอง 2222 ปีที่แล้ว
Taking the train from Sault Ste. Marie to the Agawa Canyon has been on our 'bucket list' for a long time. The scenery was inspiring, the train was comfortable and the weather was perfect. If you are curious about the trip, take a few minutes to join us. In particular, we found the connection to Lawren Harris and the Group of Seven to be interesting. The Agawa Canyon Train runs from early August...
5 Days 4 Nights from Toronto to Vancouver by train.

We booked this trip in January 2020, and then the pandemic hit! We postponed and rescheduled every few months for over 2 years. We were determined to take this trip because it was on our 'bucket list'. VIA Rail accommodated every change, every request without a problem. On Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022 we finally made it. The trip of a lifetime for us. We made this video because we thought you ...
I'm doing the Edmonton to Toronto portion of the trip this Christmas. It was a bucket list trip for my wife and I, but she never got the chance before she passed, so I am going solo.
Sorry for your loss. Taking the trip on your own will be a tribute to her memory. The VIA staff are wonderful and will make your journey enjoyable.
Really nice video, many thanks! The only time I was in Canada was in 1994 - I was working for British Rail at the time, and I was able to travel in Coach (I was young then!) for only the cost of the tax on the public fare - as I recall I paid $25 to travel Toronto - Montreal - Ottawa - Toronto - Winnipeg! I think that memorial you showed in Winnipeg has been built since I was there, I don’t remember it being there when I visited The Forks (I stayed at the Fort Garry Hotel).
Thanks for your kind comments. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights at the Forks is relatively new and quite beautiful. I travelled to Winnipeg regularly for business and became very fond of the city.
Great you went on this train journey. The food was amazing.
Yes, we loved it. We were told that the food would be catered on this trip, unlike 'The Canadian' where meals are fully prepared on the train. However, as you say, the food was amazing on this trip. We couldn't tell the difference. Thanks for watching our modest video.
I rode this train from Halifax to Saint Foy just a little over a week ago. Enjoyed excellent service and a beautiful trip. Staff very friendly and the scenery quite pretty. An awesome experience for sure.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Taking this same train July 16. Looks like you had car 37? Just wondering how the nighttime went? Sleep good? How far back from the locomotive were you located? Could you hear the horn, etc?
We were in car 38. Approximately 4 cars from the front. We didn't hear the horn overnight. The bunk beds were comfortable. The moving train was relaxing . Although because we cross a time zone East bound our normal wake up time was an hour later. A bit of a shock.
@@dougpearn9415 So was car 37 further back or closer to the front? Glad to hear all was great. Very excited for the trip. Any tips you could share to make it more enjoyable?
@@KyleMills1 We were one car closer to the front. It is a fun trip. I would suggest finding a suitable table in the canteen or lounge car with a nice view of the ocean. Sitting in your cabin doesn't afford the same views. The meals and service are both amazing. In the business lounge in Montreal they will ask you to pick a time for dinner. We chose late because we reasoned it would be quieter. It was. By that time of night it is dark, no scenery to enjoy.
This is cool, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
WTH is up with this music? Is it necessary? How about just using the real audio?
Really nice job on the video Can’t wait to do it in the fall or sooner
Thanks! It really is a wonderful trip. We really enjoyed the experience. The VIA staff took great care of us.
Lovely video thanks for taking us on your trip , we noticed you get into Vancouver very early in the morning do they give you breakfast on board ? Cheers 🍷🚂🙂
Yes, we arrived @ 5 am in Vancouver. The crew informed us the night before. However we had until 8 am to disembark. They served breakfast before we left. Quite considerate, really.
Every year we take Via Rail to Edmonton and then rent car to drive to Terrace Bc. Your video was very informative. We love Via, as we don't like to fly and its always a good trip on Via
Awesome! Thank you! We love VIA too.
Did the two-person bedroom not have a bathroom with a shower?
Hello. Our cabin had a separate bathroom (but the sink is located in the main cabin). We did not have a shower. The showers were located at the end of the car. You had to book a time with the porter to use it. Because of pandemic rules, the porter had to closely control access and sanitize the shower after every use. The Prestige Class Cabins include a shower. However they are substantially higher fare. Hope that answers you question.
Turn the sound off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did create the video so that you could watch it with the sound off. Thanks.
Great video. May I ask the cost all in ?
Thank you. We had fun putting it together. For us the train trip was just over $4,000 Canadian. Having said that, the final cost varies greatly depending on the time of year. The VIA Rail website will give you a more exact quote. The VIA Rail agents are very, very helpful, you want to talk to a real person before you book. VIA Rail also offers specials on their 'Discount Tuesday'. You could sign up for their emails to receive them. Hope that answers your question.
Thank you both for showing that you care by wearing your masks. I miss more of us were like this, thanks for caring about your fellow humans, family and friends, like I do.
Thanks so much
Surely you sped up the camera after Kamloops? The "Canadian" and highway traffic are not that fast.🤣
Hi Sam, yes I did. I was trying for an interesting video technique to keep it engaging. Nice catch. We hope you enjoyed it overall. For us, this was a "bucket list" trip.
Why is there no Montreal connection to the "Canadian"? The train consist used to include Montreal cars.
Yes, the Canadian originates in Toronto. We did meet people travelling from Halifax on a cross country trip. They had to take a day train from Montreal to Toronto to catch The Canadian. Not sure when VIA changed the route and schedule.
@@dougpearn9415 They must have left a day early because no day train from Montreal to Toronto will connect with the "Canadian" on same day.
@@samtrak1204 Correct, they came in from Montreal the day before. Probably spent the night in Montreal too after getting off the Ocean. They were on quite the trip.
@@dougpearn9415 Montreal disconnect is unacceptable🥲
The decals and unnecessary writings on the side of the classic Budd streamlined cars are distracting and tacky.😱
I miss your oral commentary.
Thanks for your comment. I personally think there is too much empty talk on most videos. I like to see and hear what's happening without narration. However, I do appreciate your differing point of view.
This is a nice video. In fact, I am going to go on the Canadian Via Rail at the end of the month with my father from Vancouver heading to Toronto
That's amazing. We hope you enjoy the trip as much as we did.
You need to narrate your trip voice is always good
Thanks for your feedback. Your point is well taken.
well done! We drove the trans Canada hwy that runs parallel to the train. I would have preferred the train. On my bucket list for 2023. Thank you!
why do people for the most part don't want to talk in their videos?
Your comment is well-taken. I debated with myself about including a voice-over track or just supers. In my limited research I felt that there is a lot of empty 'talking' on many videos and felt the images and supers could adequately convey the intended message. Thanks for commenting. Always welcome the input.
Another fabulous video!! Somehow I missed this until now. A beautiful trip!!!
This was an awesome video!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks Karen!
Brings back memories from when I was a kid and we did the cross country trip..
I’ve driven across Canada 3 times but never on the Canadian by train. Many times Halifax to Montreal or Toronto though. Thanks for the video, it was very well done. Cheers from NS.
Thanks for your kind comments. It is a beautiful country regardless of how you travel. It was something we both wanted to capture.
Took the same trip 2 weeks after you, still snowing in Manitoba. Looks like you had better weather :) Food was great, the prime rib was superb. Too bad it was dark when we got to the Fraser Canyon. Next time we'll do a summer trip. All in all, a fantastic trip!
So glad you noted the food. We thought the meals were wonderful too. Just working on a companion video of the food, activities and amenities on board. Hopefully we will get it posted soon. This is a slow process and I am easily distracted.
Thank you. We hope to do this in May 2023!
We hope you can make it. The trip was amazing!
Canada is beautiful! We drove from Calgary to Vancouver when I was a teenager, an amazing trip!
Totally agree. It is a beautiful country! Seeing it from ground level over 5 days was inspiring for sure.
Jasper is one of my fav places I have ever traveled to!
Totally agree! The mountain scenery is amazing.
Question: Are there stops over 30 minutes on this route?
Yes. On our trip we had extended stops in Winnipeg (approximately 3 hours) and Jasper (similar 3 hour stop). Each stop is dictated by how close to you are to the planned schedule. CN freight traffic on the same route can cause delays.
This route is on my Bucket List. My wife and I , did the cross country trip from Chicago to LA a month ago
That sounds amazing. There is something special about extended train trips like that. We hope you are able to take 'The Canadian' sometime.
Nice vlog! Great presentation. I am a new subscriber to your channel. Has inspired me to take a trip. Greetings from Plano, Texas, United States.
Thank you for the kind comment and for subscribing. We thought it was important to share this wonderful trip. It meant a lot to us.
The Canadian’s Observation Car is superior to Amtrak’s because it offers a forward and rear view of the train.
It's a great place to grab some pictures of the changing scenery. Thanks for the note. Haven't been on Amtrak, yet.
Why are you wearing a mask in your room?
The rules may have already changed by now. Back then, we were required to wear masks in the common areas of the train. We did not wear them in our cabin. And we could take them off when we were eating in the dining car.
Great job! Very helpful in choosing our next adventure. I look forward to your video about food and activities. Any suggestions on hotels to stay in before and after the trip?
Thanks so much for watching our video. And for your patience. I am slow getting that food, activities and recommendations video together. Vancouver has an abundance of great hotels. We have stayed at the Fairmont Waterfront (very nice) and the Pan Pacific (also nice). If you have a budget the Coal Harbour Coast Hotel is nice, about a block away from Coal Harbour. Hope that helps.
@@dougpearn9415 Helpful information. Much appreciated!
Thank you for sharing your "The trip of a lifetime"!
Glad you enjoyed it!
How about sleeping equipments,beds….?
Thanks for watching our video. I am planning to cover the food, activities and amenities, plus some recommendations in a companion video which is not complete yet. I am a little slow this.
I just book today for this trip for end of October, it’s the first available cabin for one !
That's exciting. Enjoy the trip.
My wife and I made the same trip in Sep '09. An absolutely fabulous journey and the service on the train was 4-star! Thanks for the memories!
So glad you enjoyed the trip. It's a beautiful country. Yes, the service onboard was first class, well beyond what we expected.
Wonderful ! channel/UCU9nL2-KSiKbjSsVGDmAmKw
It's a bucket list item for me. Would have liked to see more on the food served in the dining car. Good overall video, thanks for sharing.
Great video, thank you so much. Looks like you both had a wonderful and fun time.
It looked like you both had a wonderful time! Your video was well edited and the music choices were spot on. It was an inspiration and I hope to make this trip one day soon, myself. Bravo!
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and for your kind comments. We did have a wonderful time.
Really loved the music to go along with the lovely mountain scenes and sunrise in Jasper. What is the building on top of the mountain at 14:19?
Hi thanks for the feedback. I believe the building you refer to is the "Summit Restaurant" which can be accessed by the Jasper Skytram. Maybe some viewers with more specific information can contribute. Here is the website: www.jasperskytram.com/things-do/experiences/alpine-cafe/
Well done!
This was a very well presented chronicle of a most wonderful journey, one I have done four times with the first being in 1957. I hope to do it again sometime.
How did you get video footage atop the train?
We shot through the front window of the observation dome. It gives a great view of the winding movement of the train and the surrounding landscape. We spent most our time in the dome car.
Really nice. No nonstop chatter, just good video. 👍
Thanks for taking the time to watch it.
nice journey
