In case you didn't fix your error, Gollum revealed Bilbo's location but since Frodo put on the ring, the Ringwraiths found out that it was really Frodo carrying the ring and followed him and the Fellowship.

I don't think the Ring "picks" anyone other than Sauron. Everyone who come into contact with it just become corrupted. Smeagol just happened to be the one who got it. Deagol would probably have had the same fate(though it would've taken longer).

In the short film, The Hunt for Gollum, it tells how so many people were looking for Gollum because he had the One Ring so Sauron, or should I say Saruman, sent out Ringwraiths to capture Gollum and get the ring. Once they found out he didn't have it, they tortured him until the few mumbles "Shire! Bagginses!" came out and they went looking for Frodo. Gollum was quite known almost everywhere so that is how many people like Frodo and Gandalf knew so much about him.

I don't know why people try to explain gollum's life using movie footage. You can't do it, at least not all of his life
