What Eric is saying about locked formats is what really appeals to me! I love exploring all these retro formats, I used to love goats, now i'm pretty excited about edison but getting a bit tired of birds, it's nice to switch it up. I would love to have like 5 popular retro formats

That’s so funny. You mentioned you had this guy at your locals that loved Noble Knights and I had a similar guy at mine 😂 he always got the new cards on sneak peak days and updated his deck in real time. He was a really good player too, so this is just his side project but he often played it at locals

honestly i would not like an advance format of edison. I'm mainly drawn to edison because I enjoy playing dragon decks. If the format makes those decks unplayable, there's no point for me to even play. for example, REDMD would be significantly weaker, especially with restrictions like being a hard once per turn and limiting the number of special summons per copy. and just with a quick thought, it just seems like the current best decks would still be the best decks but with every other deck getting nerfed.

Imagine all of us playing retro formats for a niche game and then trying to have an ego about allowing only certain people in. Why we floodgating ourselves out here?

Personally, switching between formats often feels like a breeze of fresh air. While I have a main format I play, I love changing format (hat, tengu & perf circle) and sometimes game entirely (i'm mainly playing OPTCG lately). Tbh in my group of friends we even created our own custom edison banlist (no dustshoot, no trinity decks) and it's a lot of fun. In the end, for me it's just about having fun once a week with friends :)

I 100% agree. The retro community is small enough without people gatekeeping newcomers from the community or trying to tear down formats they don't like.

There’s elitists and gatekeepers in any competitive community, but Edison Format is definitely above average in terms of an inviting community, ESPECIALLY at a local level and IRL, my local went from 6 man 3 round weeklies last year to like 14-18 players with 4 rounds now, everyone is super inclusive, wether youre a modern sweat or a casual noob, we all try really hard to help people improve and give advice and create a community, super sick format hope it sticks around a couple more years at this pace

Since I’ve stopped playing modern yugioh from 2017. Ive been playing 3-4 different retro formats and I’m having the best time of my life playing old yugioh formats.

This was a big thing at the start of Edison, and even after Edison took off with Tengu. I would really love for people to stop trying to tear other formats down as a way to build up the ones they like. Just stop yucking peoples yum man.

We are talking about old formats here. These formats are played entirely for enjoyment. Enjoyment is inherently subjective. You can't label something "the best" or "better than your format" because fun and enjoyment means something different for each and every person. The whole "format x is better than your format" is cringeworthy at best.

The same people that comment telling Edison players to stay out of "their format" are probably the same ones that are bitter because their format doesn't get as much representation. Lol

I get some people are trying to make a profit off of these formats but it’s gatekeeping people from playing when this alternative format is getting costly for cards that are 10+ years old and haven’t been reprinted and the ones that are have prices that are outrageous

I definitely get tilted when I see people rag on others having fun in their formats. We all have different tastes, there is no like 'objective' best format

Thoughts on supporting a movement for Edison to be THE retro format? Perhaps special designation to be the official second format, then everything else remains under the Time Wizard umbrealla?

Hey Frazier, thanks for the great content as always. I'm personally more of an enjoyer than a commenter but I felt compelled to comment on this video (especially once you said that you read all of your comments). Something that I think is a big miss in this conversation about gatekeeping across formats is gatekeeping within formats. I stopped playing Yugioh altogether a few years ago, and a friend recently got me into Edison. While I'm loving it, I'm also feeling gatekept while climbing the learning curve. There is so much content out there about how people coming into Edison are scrubs that can ruin a good player's tournament by sacking them, or something similar--whether it be because of deck choice or skill gap or both. While not every person who enters a retro format community is going to end up a pro in it, I feel like the "welcome," so-to-speak from players who are more established in Edison could *definitely* be a whole lot warmer. We're trying to grow the formats we love playing, aren't we? Curious if you have thoughts. Thanks!

Personally I tried HAT and Tengu and didnt like it I like Goats but it was difficult to get cards so I got into edison and I love it. But people should play whatever they want. The more players the better and who knows maybe playing smth else might give inspiration to innovate and build a new deck in another format

The poaching is definitely the biggest toxic behavior. For me, I dont stan time wizard formats as a modern player, but when modern drags out a bit too long, i go to Edison to take a detour cuz i love Yugioh the game and IP. If someone is stanning a format so hard to the point that they shit on others to try to poach them, it dont feel that inviting. I got into Edison cuz yugitubers that do modern content introduced me (shoutout MBT and Joshua Schmidt)

Honestly, it's games like these that convince me that Hero Frog will just always be better than a pure build. There was a time when I thought Junk Frog had similar power with the Dark Armed and the meta back then didn't have as much oppression, but I never brought it to a tournament over Hero Frog because whenever you play a deck that has an over-reliance on Treeborn, you just forfeit about 1/5 of your games you can't find Treeborn. Also I'm pretty sure Fishborg is just not worth playing. Having a synchro toolbox sounds cool on paper, but in practice, I found it was too hard to make anything worthwhile. It's a level 1 tuner that costs you a discard, so you're often investing 3+ cards into your synchro. And it's a terrible draw. Rarely do I play a game where Fishborg does anything but brick, and you didn't use it in any of the replays either.

I kept my HAT Format cards just In case i ever play again! Just need 2 sanctums, and a Playset of moraltechs to complete the HAT Deck! I have the Geargia cards as well and most of the XYZs!

14:56 Madolche player completely tossed the game out the window by detaching hoot instead of mew. You always detach mew, so tiara adds back mew and anjelly to do the combo again next turn. If they had mew anjelly the next turn they would just main phase 1 make Leviair tiara which outs the exciton and wins.

Mega Pack 14/15 killed any potential value for any foils printed in those sets, and the original sets they appeared in due to being printed in the exact same rarity.

Dracosack was recently played in modern as an option in Kashtira. That is why its a little bit.
