    This was one of the best comparisons video I’ve seen. I watched this video three times, today being the fourth. Both have their flaws like you stated f2 needs work in post and rode cuts out. I’m still on the edge because I really like the f2 because I will be filming at the beach and out side with a lot of noise but the rode is plug and play. I don’t use the RODE anymore at all. I trust the zoom way more. I haven’t had any issues with them at all. I ended up buying another one and I swear by them. Literally the only drawback is sync, which is a MINOR extra step compared to the issues I’ve had with the RODE.

    I think you made the perfect decision “for you”. I’m primarily a bird shooter, where reach means a lot….. but so does the ability to crop. My primary camera is the R5, but I shoot with an 800mm lens and often , a 1.4 TC, so at 1120mm, I’m okay with a FF. I’d LOVE to get the R7 for a back up. I could, and most often, would just leave the TC off, and still be getting out to 1280mm…. Or I could use my sigma 150-600 (240-960 on a crop sensor) if that were too much. Only thing that kills me about the R7, is it’s just too darn small ☹️ And no battery grip available ☹️ Really don’t know what to get for a backup…

    I think the 50mm you're talking about is the 1.4. I loved it on a crop sensor. On the full-frame, not so much. As for the 40mm pancake lens, I've done Chinese New Year with only that lens, and loved it. I would say that for street photography, it shines. But with the R6, now that i have the RF 35mm, I almost never use the 40. I just plain love my RF lenses.

    so happy listening to you. Yesterday I confirmed that a friend is bringing me the R7 from the states by the end of the year with the rf 35 1.8. I´m so happy. I purchased the canon adaptor for my ef lenses; 35 50 and 85, and efs lenses 24 and 40. (the pankakes work beautifully in the Weebill S, im shooting videoclips with an 80d). I´m a musician also and take low light photos to other music players so i married primes. In the future i dream having rf primes 16 24 35 50 85 and the 24-70 (can you imagine a thin rf 24 70 2.0 in the future -instead of 2.8-?). Byeeeee have a nice week.

    Think the only drawback you may find in r6 is overheating. Is it right? But you just have to know your tool and use it right. I'm aiming in the future for a r7 (no overheating, no limit recording, just get a 24 mil for small rooms).. or a r7 with 3 dials (can you imagine?!).. im in Argentina with my 80d (retro jajaj) wich forces me to learn to focus excellent with my body and set lights at their best. And works. But i learn a lot from your thoughts. Thanks!

    • @queerfoto
      @queerfoto 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tested the body and got 26 minutes before it overheated in 4K 60 recording constantly. I have yet to use it for video or hybrid other than my TH-cam videos so far. I may consider the R7 later on. I could also sell my EOS R for an R7. Probably would have to sell both. I’m not ready to give them up yet. I generally don’t need the extra reach from the crop, but may find it beneficial in some videos settings.

    I currently own a 7D MKII, use mostly for kids sports. I was looking to jump into mirror less, a lot for the tech, wifi, ability to transfer photos quickly, etc. I was hoping for the successor to the MKII but unfortunately the R7 is not it. Just the control layout or combining of controls will drive me crazy, long of the short. Am looking to the R6. Appreciate your video and perspective.

      Yeah, I’m loving it so far, honestly. The autofocus is bonkers compared to my EOS R. The whole camera just feels right in my hands. Just not crazy over the dial on top, but I guess I can’t have it all.

  • @rreichar1
    @rreichar1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have an R6 and an R7. I am mostly a bird photographer so for me the advantage of the R7 is the reach. I also much prefer the video implementation that is much better than the R6. The R7 has lots of rolling shutter using the electronic shutter and the mechanical shutter is ridiculously loud. The R6 has neither of these issues but for my use case the R7 works better. I love the R6 and if I were a portrait or wedding photographer I would keep it. As it is my RF 100-500mm lens is effectively 800mm with the R7. That is about the upper size limit of lenses that I would want to drag around all day. Can’t get a larger lens so I need a smaller sensor. I rented an OM-1 last week because I am always looking for something smaller. Obviously your use case is different. You have to do what is right for you.

  • @puppenigma

    Thank you for brilliant video and a huge dose of common sense crammed into 10 minutes, so good I watched it twice to bring myself back to earth. The “reverse” title caught my attention. It’s so easy to get caught up in the Specs Race and really quickly it seems like only way out is to buy a 1DX or R3 you can’t afford. It is very much about your own needs and budget as you point out. Plus your own usage, existing equipment and future path like EF vs RF glass. I have a 7D Mk2 and primarily wildlife, mainly stills and purely as hobby. It is brilliant camera, rugged, 2 card slots and 1080P is enough for me and crucially I use the battery grip for both ergonomics and battery life which is already good. I’m retiring soon and can put more time into photography soon so I’m planning ahead now. The R7 is brilliant for the money but it’s not a replacement 7D2 (more like an R90 ?) and there is no battery grip available, nor near indestructible body, nor huge buffer. So, I now think I’ll hold onto it, stick a 100-400L onto it permanently and buy another lighter more all round camera, and full frame for all the crop and wide lens reasons you mentioned. I also agree with your Megapixel logic, 20 is fine, 24 would be nice, 30 or more I don’t need, my 7D Mk2 is 20MP, as is the R6 and 1DX Mk3, and the R3 is still “only” 24MP. I’ll probably go for the R6 now, to move into mirrorless and full frame but I now think I will consider a good used 5D Mk 4 as the controls and menus are identical. There are big differences with the R7 controls compared to all the other cameras. In short, keep the crop camera for what it’s best at for me which is reach. Thanks again for realigning my thought process and I’m looking forward to your videos on the R6.

    @robertatwell7615 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that you needed another full frame body capable of 4k60P and that is the reason that you are going with the R6. When you are starting and don’t have a lot of money already invested or even available to invest you make decisions based upon your current business requirements. The R6 and R5 have pretty much the same focus system and similarly so do the R3 and R7. You made your choice to go with the older technology because of your current needs and economics. The R6 is what you decided upon but I think that you really haven’t made a good argument for why someone should buy an R6 over an R7. That’s OK but your video really tells us more about where you are than which camera is the better choice. Please don’t take this as criticism of you but rather an attempt to remind everyone that we are all under restrictions early on in our photography careers. Often we make decisions based upon where we have been and are now rather than where we want to be or should be. It’s tough to accept that some of our older choices were not well made and didn’t account for future needs. As you go forward think about your purchases in terms of the long term. In general you will find that great glass is forever, good lighting can make any equipment better, and camera bodies are truly your expendables. Over 40 years ago I was where you were and I didn’t have to worry about video as a wedding photographer. It was all Kodak VeriColor. In the very beginning 35mm and roll film. Then roll film and 4x5 view cameras, finally digital cameras. I shot over 600 weddings and I can tell you that for stills it’s really the glass and your lighting that matters. Your camera body needs to take the picture when you press the shutter button. Your skill behind that equipment is what will get you great pictures. So keep moving forward and don’t worry so much about the camera body but rather the lenses and the lighting that you bring to those images. All the best.

      You are correct that she really hasn't made a good argument for why someone should buy an R6 over an R7. Perhaps you might make your own video exploring why someone should buy an R6 over an R7.
