The war took it's toll on him but he carved out a great life after the war. Wikki erroneously has it that his parents committed suicide. That is incorrect. They never saw each other after the war until Merriell heard of Sledges book. He contacted Sledge and they had a reunion. Sledge was a pallbearer at Merriell's funeral in 1993.
