Wildlife Wednesday - How do beavers help other animals?
มุมมอง 1005 หลายเดือนก่อน
Beavers are North America's largest rodent, and are considered a keystone species due to the significant benefit they provide ecosystems in which they live. The habitat they create and modify helps improve wetlands, mitigate flooding, and mediate extreme temperatures. Countless animal species depend on beavers, including over 50% of North America's threatened and endangered species. In this vid...
Sage Mountain Maple Syrup: Tree to Mouth in 7 Hours!
มุมมอง 1649 หลายเดือนก่อน
This was our first year making maple syrup at Sage Mountain Botanical Sanctuary in Central Vermont. We started small by tapping only 8 trees using both buckets and bags to collect 60 gallons of sap so far. Today was our first cook, starting with just over seven gallons of sap. We built our evaporator using copying a model we found online. You can purchase the kits for around $300-400, or you ca...
Peace on Earth For All of Vermont's Beings
มุมมอง 413ปีที่แล้ว
Here's a small collection of our neighbors at Sage Mountain from the last few weeks who have brought us much holiday cheer! The beavers in the video are those recently allowed to live in the right of way of our wetlands, rather than being trapped by the state’s Transportation Department as they have been for decades. Now they will raise their families and help improve our wetlands to better mit...
Whitetail Deer in Rut on Sage Mountain
มุมมอง 31ปีที่แล้ว
Every November when the temperatures dip below freezing, the breeding season for whitetail deer begins in Vermont! Male deer can be seen giving way to caution as they pursue female does in estrus this time of year. Here a young female can be seen crossing a trail where just five minutes later, a mature buck is in hot pursuit. Whitetail fawns are born in May and June after a 200-day gestation pe...
Thank You Vermont Agency of Transportation for Protecting Our Beavers!
มุมมอง 133ปีที่แล้ว
By the mid-18th Century, trappers had caused the extinction of Vermont's beavers. Since their return in the early 1920's, beavers have reclaimed their rightful home on our landscape and ushered in a cascade of ecological benefits with their dam and pond making activities. For decades, the beavers that live within the corridor of our sanctuary have been trapped because of the impact their activi...

Become a Vermont Beaver Believer!

It's Wildlife Wednesday, and today we are featuring our beloved wetland keystone species - the Beaver! The American beaver (Castor canadensis) was pushed to extinction in Vermont at the hands of colonists, but has rebounded to serve a vital role in protecting our watersheds and forests. Beavers play an incredibly important role in our world, altering and shaping the landscape. As nature's "engi...
Fabulous February Furbearers!
มุมมอง 254ปีที่แล้ว
Late winter time is when many animals are beginning to get more frisky, as the snow begins to melt and more sunlight is experienced. Here we see a local fox, coyote and bobcat that are using a narrow wildlife corridor that crosses a state highway. The bobcat can be seen going through the frozen culvert! Notice the thick winter coat on the bobcat. These furbearer are essential to any healthy eco...
90 Second Visit to a Vermont Beaver Colony!
มุมมอง 2232 ปีที่แล้ว
Beavers have made a remarkable comeback after over four centuries of commercial exploitation by the fur trade. They've done so well as to pose a problem in many Vermont towns where they sometimes block culverts and threaten to flood roads with their dams. Those very same dams help prevent flooding, and create vital habitat for fish and other wildlife, especially birds! Beavers are the only othe...

Rosemary, thank you for telling the fart story! My family totally resonates with renegade humor 💗. And what a wise and beautiful way to remind us to not be so darn serious. What I loved most about this gathering is that you both showed us the simplicity of celebrating the Solstice in a meaningful way. So many possibilities and none of them wrong. For overthinkers like me, it was a poignant lesson and so enjoyable. Herbalists are my people, and I send love and gratitude to you both 💗

The VT Fish and Wildlife took down the signs letting people know this is an active Moose crossing. In the meantime the state has continuously increased hunting license for moose in spite of decreasing populations(due to ticks and habitat disruption). Please help by calling. F & W and asking them to put moose crossing signs back up. They’ll tell you it’s not an active area… but because Sage Mt has been monitoring this area for several years now, we can prove otherwise. Help protect these beautiful wild creatures. Thank your u, Rosemary Gladstar
