Leafcutter Ants
Project Noah Nature Class Video to learn all about Leafcutter Ants!
Video Script: Here we have a trail of leafcutter ants cutting across the rainforests of Belize! Leafcutter Ants are not a single species, but instead represent up to 47 species across two genera! They have a geographic range that includes Mexico, Central America, South America and the southwestern United States. Preferred habitat includes rainforest, deciduous forests, scrub forests and open woodlands. As their name suggests, these ants cut out pieces of leaves and other vegetation. Once they have chewed off pieces, they then transport them into their underground nests. It certainly helps that each ant can hold 20 times its body weight in vegetation! Once moved to the nest, these ants then cultivate a fungus that grows on the chewed leaves. Leafcutter ants produce special enzymes and amino acids to help the fungus grow. This fungus is fed to ant larvae, aiding in the stewardship of the colony’s next generation. So yes, leafcutter ants are farmers! And their primary crop is fungus. They are one of the few animals besides people that use agriculture to cultivate their own food! Among the 47 species of leafcutter ants, different species may cultivate different fungi. These underground fungal gardens aerate and enrich the soil - and the activities of these colonies within their nests helps to stimulate the root growth of certain plant species. Colonies divide up tasks based on each ant’s size- with larger ants typically cutting plants into smaller fragments and smaller ants helping tend to the fungal gardens. Leafcutter ants form complex and fascinating social societies - through teamwork and a lot of communication, these colonies grow and prosper across tropical rainforests of the Americas.

There are many Chipmunks here in Willowbrook IL. They have many burrows although I wonder how they keep their burrows from flooding? I have dug up a few during home renovation projects (never purposefully disturbing them if I can help it). They have chambers for food and what appears to be living areas. How do they drain them? The tunnels seemed dry and well packed.
I love these little chipmunks i have 7 in my back yard. I been feeding them everyday for a year and they are still afraid of me. I wish they weren't
interesting pronunciation of Coyote
How do you get rid of them??
They love their peanuts
These are my family members
Please keep making more videos they are well done and fun 😁
Had one of these little guys fall into the pool when it first opened. I spotted him and was able to use the skimmer to get him out. Unfortunately, little guy was extremely hypothermic and unable to even run away when placed on the deck. I put him in a shoebox with some towels and a warm bottle of water. 45 min later, he returned to the woods in good spirits
we had chipmunks killing our plants and burrowing into the foundation, so i started the water bucket seed trap,...after drowning 2 a day for a week i felt too bad
MsMallory Coooom Backkkk Nooooooo MsMalloryyyy
Nicely done but I wish your shirt would have been more appropriate for school use.
excellent. ty. watching for an envirmental ed classs. Observation, note: in your recap you skip the important piece where the pigment needs to be above the alcohol and that it needs to wick up,
Why would you love the chipmunks? They make mess in your yards, burrowing under concrete patios. They are nuisance.
Hi! Do you have any recommendations for a bit cheaper UV blacklights?
I got mine for $13.99 on amazon !!
@@ItzCertifiedEmma thx!
I love my chipmunks. One had a burrow right under my dinning room window. But she seemed to have moved, as it is sealed off now. But she is still around and takes the nuts I have been setting out elsewhere. Can you explain why a chipmunk would move? She did this after having a couple babies. Once those left her burrow, she doesn't come back to where she raised them. Is it common for chipmunks to relocate burrow? Would this be because of potential predator presence? (A rat recently showed up nearby.. I am trying to rid it ... just a note). Thanks in advance.. even if this is not noticed. :) take care . Anyone with any insight would help.
I got a rat zapper from amazon. I got 4 so far. I don’t want thousands of dollars of my property destroyed.
A few years ago we and our rural neighbors had an infestation of chipmunks. So much so that live trapping and relocation was a pain. The Remington had to get done use.
Nice and well done!
I've been seeing one of these near muy house in Cancún but I didn't know what It was
they have destroyed my yard
Waited an hour for a chipmunk and all I got was a lousy rat burrow

Being a major wildlife lover, I fed chipmunks by hand. Where I live, they are skittish around people. I got the chipmunk comfortable around me by putting wildlife food by my feet, then on my shoes, to in my garden gloved hand. I did it near the bird food area. I filmed them eat out of my hand. They ate nuts sitting next to me on the porch step. With the wildlife food, they fill their cheeks, run to their burrow, and run back to me.I also fed deer, but not by hand. I tossed them an apple. They seemed comfortable near me. It was a large buck in our fenced in backyard, and a younger doe a few days later. I haven't seen one in our yard recently while I'm around, but I keep an eye out for them.
It looks like flying Pig. 😂
People in Trinidad and some parts of Africa still eat this Rodent
Aq s l😊😅😮😮😢😢😅😊😊
They look like cotton balls indeed.

My mom’s cat has killed a lot of chipmunks. So cats are the enemy to the chipmunk
Cats didn't even make the list of predators.
video lesson was pleasant seeming enough ~until the end! What is this stupid Lie warning! 🤨 " -and Never Ever attempt to touch a wild chipmunk!" What?! C'mon!
Chipmunks make very distinctive noise for different predators. I was near my house where I normally see this little guy. I hear him start chirping and its the noise they make to warn of overhead predators. Next I know this little bugger runs over and sits right on top of my foot. The reason he was chirping, there was a hawk circling the area. What I find really odd is that I haven't had any interaction with this little guy. Other than watching him run back and forth from a distance. He sat on top of my foot for a minute or so. I guess as soon as he felt the coast was clear he buggered off. It was a neat experience.
Interesting how/why he thought he would be safe with you. Turned out to be right.
I love that!!! I've got one that runs across the porch in the morning. I just found the burrow beside the porch a few minutes ago. I would so like to have this little one as a pet!!! No haters, I wouldn't do that. He/she is just so cute!!!
I have some chipmunk friends on my back patio who come out every morning and afternoon to get peanuts . It’s pretty cool
Clean burrows? There's tons dug out dirt outside of the ones in this clip. 🤷♂️
awesome channel
I used to find chipmunk burrows right outside of my apartment complex and I would see them peek their little heads out
Chee chee chee* chee* chee chee chee" chee chee ***
How do I get them them in the Tampa Bay Area?
They are ruing my flower gardens. I am working to get rid of them.
Came for chipmunks stayed for Ms. Mallory!
My chipmunk is named Apple Hioni
I found this video, while searching for how to attract moths for germinating.
I have a chipmunk friend named Nutters. She knows her name and hangs out w me in the backyard. I keep Killer, our Coopers Hawk from eating her. So do the group of Crows that i befriended in my yard. Although crows don't normally defend chipmunks, they are smart and understand my fondness to Nutters. It helps that I feed them hard boiled eggs, nuts & cat food in the morning. Nutters has had one litter of babies so far. One of her kids comes back so I will supply them with nuts. I love wildlife. ♥️💚♥️💚
Nice
lets not forget how cute they are..lolol
I love chipmunks. One has a burrow in our front yard. We love watching them pop in and out of the hole that leads to it. They are so cute. We put out seeds and unsalted peanuts for them to eat. I love taking videos of these cuties!
Chipmonks are really ferocious and will try to rip your arm off if you try to feed one. So listen to MS Mallory and keep your distance🤕
Will chipmunks enter your home like mice, or do they just stay underground?
My neighborhood has so many chipmunks. I always love stopping to watch them when I drive by them on the street. I'd like to feed and befriend them, but a little scared of being bitten by accident
Buy some roasted and unsalted peanuts and start by tossing some to them. Toss them closer and closer to you over several days. Hold a peanut by the end and extend it to one. I have been hand feeding squirrels for several years. Squirrels have poor vision at the tip of the nose, so I have what is known as "squirrel fingers." One chipmonk mistook my finger tip for a peanut and I lifted him up while he hung on. We are good pals now and comes when I call him. 🧡💛🤎🐿🐿🐿
@Kool Burn I've been hand feeding unsalted in the shell peanuts to chipmunks all year. I've had them nip my finger and thumb a number of times. Their bite is gentle. It doesn't hurt. They've never drawn blood or even scratched my skin They let go as soon as they realize they got me and not the peanut. Don't be afraid of them. You can watch video's here on youtube of people hand feeding chipmunks to learn how and to calm your concerns. Good luck, they're cute, funny, friendly little critters.
I have one we feed on porch but he or she is shy it loves licking the dripping of the humming bird feeder when we change it out. Have yet been able to get close to him
You're not alone! I'm 2 months or so into my new chipmunk relationship and I can only get the little guy to eat peanuts off my barefoot. Unfortunately no petting or lap feeding like some of the other people talk about. These things still seem like a dream to me considering how wary he is!
The ones at my house eats bread
I guess i’lol stop allowing them to eat out of my lap. Thanks for the warning😂😂
