Atlantic Bluefin Tuna spotted on the coast Land’s End by the Armed Knight below the hotel.
They seemed to be having a feeding frenzy during a super high September spring tide in the beautiful sun and clear blue skies.
You could clearly see the eddy currents in the swirling clear aqua blue water. Three lucky Kayakers turned up and paddled amongst the high speed fish leaping out of the water just a few metres away. We spotted several seals also chasing fish around the rocks beneath us.
These magnificent Bluefin Tuna can reach weights of 250 kg and grow to 2 to 3 metres long. Some were definitely the size of adult Dolphins. You could hear the explosion of water and a silver flash as they twisted and turned breaking the surface of the water revealing that distinctive tail fin and yellow finlets. Sometimes they completely leapt through the air so their whole body could be seen. I’m sure I could hear the vocals of the tuna along with the Oohs and Aahs of the excited spectators above us. It was so funny.
Below the cliffs were noisy chaotic seagulls flying above shoals of fish, possibly Mackerel and Garfish which are common prey for the lightning fast Bluefins.
After watching the action in awe for a couple of hours we decided to have lunch then returned to the cliffs with our cameras to attempt to capture this spectacular sight. It was my first ever sighting of these amazing creatures of the sea.
It was challenging to get the spectacular tuna in the frame and in focus as they randomly broke the surface and disappeared again in a couple of seconds. I was so pleased I managed to get a few video clips and the odd lucky still.
