But, with your goal advice- I’m shifting goals and literally going to go make a cup of tea, fire up computer, Logic Pro and dive into a portion if this project I’ve been putting off and see where the next few hours take me. Thank you!! I’ve found this so helpful. Been trying to navigate this menopause journey and grief , using writing and music without knowing any theory. And how to even manage a tune when stressed. My voice I’ve noticed suffers the most so this will be a daily exercise now 🥰Glad your channel appeared today!

      aww I'm sorry to hear you are processing grief! And I often see vocal tension in my students when they are struggling with past fears. What I would say is just sit at the piano and allow yourself to cry and release whatever is inside without the pressure of writing a strctured song. Improvisation can often lead to a fully fledged song if you give it space to breath. I will actually be doing a masterclass on improvisational piano in a week or so which you might find helpful. its totally Free to register. you can register here: www.thesingerspiano.com/5stepsb

    Thankyou. I needed to find you as I've been feeling a bit stuck. I set out to express myself musically around 5 years ago! First I learnt electronic production but felt that it didn't feel expressive (too computerized) so I was learning the piano at the same time. I love understanding theory and how to extract chords from a scale. I've basically learnt all 12 scales and that's it! (As well as some covers that I can sing along to) Then I took singing lessons and started performing in a choir. Then I started attending open Mic's recently and decided it would be best if I learnt to play the guitar as it's easily transportable to venues. I think I'm stuck in this constant state of wanting to know more before I feel skilled enough to declare myself a musician. It's all got a bit complicated and this video and your channel is a great, much needed reminder that I really want to tell my own story through music and it doesn't have to be that difficult!! Thankyou very much.

    • @thesingerspiano
      @thesingerspiano หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hear you!! The musical journey of expression is never linear. But that is the fun of it. To go where your heart takes you and play and improvise. That’s amazing that you have learnt 12 scales. Such an accomplishment- now are you improvising around those scales when you’re playing the chords? Once you know the scale that fits the chords it make it so much easier. Also I will be running a free webinar in a few weeks sharing all my secrets on creating a beautiful piano arrangement which I think will really help you see the bigger picture. Keep going expressing your truth!! Remember it’s the experience that you go through on the journey that is the most valuable. And you can change your thinking around that at any time. 😀

      @lougeorge หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thesingerspiano Thankyou for taking the time to reply to my comment. Yes I do improvise when I find a scale to suit me on that particular day (it varies!) and sometimes sing a melody and yet still no words escape my mouth!!. I'm really looking forward to your masterclass that I am enrolled in. Thankyou again and have a great day !

      I feel stuck too. Books of lyrics , a lot I wrote when grieving , now I’m trying to navigate how to do at least 1 song to share my expression. It sounds like you’ve really stepped out to learn more tho’. I’m having vocal issues , feeling as though I’m losing my voice and I’m not musically trained but feel I’ve so many songs I need to get down on paper. I just joined GarageBand but am also feeling I don’t want it to become a computer exercise. Well done for what you’ve achieved.

      @@lougeorge Sometimes words don't arrive till we feel safe! Maybe see if you can write a song that hides your true feelings but allows you to express your feelings. For example the song "Golden Brown" was about heroin, but if you listen to the lyrics they are quite criptic. So pleased you signed up for the masterclass. I'm looking forward to running it. :0)

    Changing the melody while trying to discuss the structure of that melody really damages the credibility for expertise. If you're going to talk about the beauty of the melodic structure you need to stay true to it and to its intent. The melodic structure of this song is centered in where it's trying to get to and how it struggles to get there along with Sara, constantly falling back down, just as Sara struggles to get past her love for the person she is singing to. Everything is her trying to lift up, mostly getting pulled back down and landing back where she started. The title Gravity tells us that the sense of falling in each phrase is important. It's so important that the opening piano riff is also a fall. We establish an shaky foundation wavering between C and D. Then the rest of the song structure is a back and forth between falling and a struggle to get out, but always feeling unfinished. I'll explain. The first "Something always brings me back to you" establishes the key of C then ends on D. A ii always wants to resolve into the I. But instead of resolving, it hangs on ii. It feels unfinished like she's trying to get resolution but can't. A vi wants to resolve into the V. Now look at each line. Something always brings me back to you: You - D (ii) It never takes too long: Long - A (vi) No matter what I say or do: Do (ii) I'll still feel you here till the moment I'm gone: Gone (vi) Touch (ii) Chains (vi) Much (ii) Rain (vi) Excepting the leading tone, each line is a downward sweep with maybe a feeble attempt to pull up before continuing back down. THAT'S the melodic structure. And if we're going to talk about melodic structure we have to stay true to that melody, we can't riff off it from the get go. The melodic statement is at the end of the chorus when she exasperatedly falls back to where she started: the one, the C. "And all over me" ends on a C. But your riff ends all of that traveling on the ii, the D, and loses the weight of making the end of our chorus different from the verse. These are deliberate choices made by Sara to tell the story through structure. This entire song is about where she is trying to go and being unable to get there. And somehow you've completely missed that.
