    Still waiting for WotC to "spontaneously" rediscover this cash cow so they can milk it. With as many sets as they've had since back when, they could drop 3 a week for a year and still not make a dent in awesome Vans.

      Vanguard truly felt like a Wotc version of elder dragon highlander. Now that they’ve embraced commander so much I doubt these cards ever see any sort of reprint. I could see a fan created format causing a resurgence in price of these cards, so considering how cheap many of them are, I think it’s worth buying 100 bucks of your favorites and throw them in a binder in a closet for a few years, maybe enjoy them with your friends, and get a MASSIVE ROI in the event that these make a community comeback

      The Wizards That Be are known to abandon things that people love and move on. Vanguard is more akin to Emblems than to EDH, although functionally they are closer to Class Enchantments. It was the ability to play by different rules from the start, in a balanced way, that made Van more fun.

    My brother and i played Magic during Alpha Beta 1st and 2nd edition, when arabian nights came out, i had played so much i was so bored with the game so i stopped playin. He wrote a book on how to play the game with some friends, and helped make the game popular. He created something called Matt's Thumper Deck, which was how to play goblins and red properly, and he created the infinite moves with time warp which really pissed me off, and made me storm off!! He got to meet a lot of the artists and have some cards signed, he eventually sold them many years ago to pay off his college tuition. We still have BOXES of them at our parents house deep in the closets! :) P.S. Yeah sure it's a bit scummy, but the listing is clear enough. It's ebay, buyers need to actually pay attention to this sort of thing. It really is on the person paying the premium. And honestly, $6k for 6 pieces of power nine in that condition? There's no way. Nothing about the post looks like legitimate cards and everything screams proxy/fake.

That I personally didn't feel it was clear, could, ya know, be chalked up to a personal problem. However, if they were trying to do the bare minimum to tell the truth and specifically omitted the proxy language from the title and used non-english to obscure the truth, then eF them. True, peeps can do what they want...but at Mad Magic we say "do honest business" not "technically, not against the rules business." Oh crap.. I was thinking Amped Raptor is strong with galvanic discharge and such energy shenanigans... But then there's the suspend cards are 0 mana value exploit... I think they should do a rules update that no mana value is no mana value rather than 0 mana value - ie cascade would just go past them as no mana value is not less than anything or equal to anything or more than anything and you could not pay 0 with the raptor.. They might need to be still 0 mana value as permanents tho.

      @@Jawzah It isn’t good enough an interaction to warrant a rules change and if you change cascade, you don’t just destroy 2 Modern decks one of which is on its last legs, but a Legacy deck, a Vintage Deck, and A lot of shenanigans in Commander. It just isn’t worth the rules change because it isn’t a problem, to do these powerful two for ones there is a massive deck building restriction and with amped raptor you can’t build for it, you just hope to hit unless you put it on top of your library.

This is why we can't have nice things.

    People who say "[F] the reserve list" are using proxies anyway; they have no integrity and don't want to work for anything worth value, they want everything for free. They are likely ignorant children that got too many hugs, participation trophies, and probably have peanut allergies... and they probably mulligan until they have a Soul Warden in their hand before playing their unoriginal life-gain deck. -- I guess we could meet in the middle and reprint only the Mox Pearl and they'll all shut up.

  • @chickensticks749
    @chickensticks749 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Unpopular opinion: The reserve list is the only thing propping up magic and in turn keeping card games around. As much as we like to have free things, this is why most free games end up being money grabs and terrible. You need whales to keep the Timmies afloat. The reserve list gives a floor for the game value wise, essentially a gold standard. Despite most people not owning any reserve list cards them selves, the game itself holds value and keeps the value going because people trade in cards for store credit, which only remains a premium because ultimately, you can drop a box of crap at some places and use that store credit to buy actual reserve list cards. When people pay cash for things, they tend to pay for the 5-10 dollar items a lot more commonly than big ticket items. You can make way higher profit margins off a bunch of smaller items because of the sheer volume. If you only have cheap cards though, where do you make any profit? You don't have people trading in a box of cards for one big card. The trade in part isn't the only aspect, I don't want this to come off this way, but just part of the chain, where ultimately, what happens to every card is it ends up being cheaper to not buy packs, as the cards themselves become worth less than the price of buying a pack of cards. Now when the price of the cards becomes lower than the price of a pack of the cards, people buy pre-opened cards, which means the company itself makes way less money. When the company makes way less money, they stop making the cards, support for the card game dies, and so does the game. Look at all the card games that came in hot, then die out. The first print boxes start going way up in value, then tank and suddenly the game tanks right after, coincidence? No, because people don't keep buying new packs when the prices fall to the floor, they just buy singles, until the game dies entirely. Pokemon only stays afloat due to nostolgia, and being tied to an IP that is about collecting. The reason the new card games use established IP's is because they realize they can't reply on people just wanting to keep giving them money forever.

      What about the original printing of force of will? Or mana drain (essentially a rare, once worth about 500 dollars or so, because it was only available as an uncommon in half of distro boxes)? What about the original printing of any card in ice age? Chronicles reprints destroyed the market. That was in 1995; most of those cards STILL havnt recovered. Pulling data from alpha and beta means nothing; there were only 1030 of each alpha rare and beta was only 3-5 times that print run. If you think anything after ABU wouldn’t be decimated, it’s not true. Dual lands would be destroyed from revised.

    Except 1. No, they didn't "almost reprint" a reserved list card. They printed an original card which has mechanical similarities to a reserved list card. Just like Jeweled Lotus is mechanically similar to Black Lotus, but still different. And 2. If it was even close enough to be called a copy then it would probably be one of the most expensive cards in the set, but it isn't because it was specifically built to function in an energy based deck, making it nearly useless in formats where reserved list cards even matter.

      @@MadMagicShow Why reprint anything then? I've pulled 80 dollar cards and then next set it's reprinted and goes down to 10 dollars... then 2 dollars with a 3rd reprint. To be completely fair, I doubt all the BIG reserve lists would be effected very much, because even penny cards from back then are still 600-1200 dollars. So the old ones would keep a lot of their value. As for the ones that are ONLY expensive because they have never been reprinted is just silly. and the ones that are actually used but are well under 500 dollars. those wouldn't even be bad to reprint either. There are plenty of cards that keep value close to 100 with being reprinted... like mana crypt and ragavan and many more. if they are used then they will stay pricey. All value in packs have plummeted recently and its pathetic. right now you can pull the money card in a set and still just break even... I miss the days when it was actually a gamble and you could get lucky and pull a 40 dollar card from buying 3 $4 packs and feel super good... now you pull a 40 dollar card and again... break even. The market is collapsed atm... for Non whales anyway.

    • @MadMagicShow
      @MadMagicShow 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Penny cards from back then are still a penny. Most reserved list cards are completely unplayable. The RL is a safe haven for buying cards that don’t have their value destroyed by reprints. Why wish everyone’s binder gets destroyed by reprints? Why not add to the reserved list so your cards maintain value? Wouldn’t you be more likely to continue to use hard earned money on expensive product (overly priced and produced) if you knew there was a finite amount of them and they couldn’t be reprinted ad nauseum? I’m not a whale. I hold cards from my childhood that gained value from holding them for so long. I also have RL cards I paid a large amount of money for; mostly I hustled, held cards i speculated on, and they gained value, and I’d buylist them and use store credit to get dual lands etc since i got back into the game in 2017. My parents threw out most of my Rl cards. That includes a set of power nine, and I don’t want the RL to be reprinted. I appreciate the value of working towards obtaining a relic from the old days and acquiring it. Keep in mind, reprints destroy the value of cards whether they’re used or not. It’s a simple supply/demand issue. Look at the price of enemy fetches. They’ll never recover from MH2.

      @@MadMagicShow by far most people I knew were estatic with the fetches being reprinted. Any card $1000+ isn't being bought to play, they are ONLY being bought for collecting. There is an $80, a $200, a $400, and $12,000 Shivan Dragon... the bulkest of bulk rares, gets reprinted every set almost and those have stayed. The Power nine will NEVER go down, even with reprints, because again those are not being played, only collected. The collection value of those old cards will remain extremely high. Fine don't reprint them, just make new cards that do the same thing then. That happens a ton too, and it wouldn't be reprinting the RL. With the Trash they have been outputting for the last 10 years, there isn't a note worthy card that's going to be anything like back in the day (because you spent $500 to get that $300 card..yay). Everyone that didn't grow up on magic is completely locked out of the group you're in, and have no hope of ever getting into this super exclusive group. And the longer it goes on that group gets smaller and smaller and eventually those cards will just be worthless anyway because no one is willing to buy them anymore, because the people that didn't want them, already gotten. And the rest are gone

      The shivan dragon example is flawed; at one point in time, it was considered one of the best creatures in the game by casuals. It’s also incredibly iconic. Alpha and beta original prints are the only sets insulated from falling price due to reprints. Personally, my parents threw out my power nine. I had playsets of anything playable in beta. All that is gone. I got back into collecting around 2017. I worked to acquire these rare pieces of antiquity. I have very few cards from my childhood. With ANY asset, being at the right place and willing to risk money at the right time is how someone acquires wealth. Bitcoin was at one point worth 1/13th of a penny. Does that mean we should just break the code and make it cheap again by printing more of it so everyone can get it at that price? What about stocks? What about the people who risked paying thousands of dollars on the game in the 90’s, held their cards, and it paid off? There is always opportunity risk and gambles in collecting and investing. Magic can still go to zero; it’s unlikely, but possible. I can’t imagine it felt good for your fetches to lose 80 percent of their value. In the world of equities and assets, chance will always favor the prepared mind, but there will always be losers and winners. The reserved list SAVED magic after it came into existence because of the backlash about chronicles. THOSE cards STILL havnt recovered in price, at all. Just proxy cards you want to play if it’s about having fun. If it’s about feel-bads because you can’t own a card worth X amount of money, try to find the next big thing and risk your hard earned money on it instead of being angry about the reserved list. Also, read the reserved list guidelines. Although they have been violated in a few ways, it is written that a card cannot be printed with simply a different name on it. There are examples of creatures that are strictly better than RL counterparts, but that’s mostly because of power creep and negligence. And if you think cards maintain price on the RL if they were reprinted, just look at the direct correlation of the downfall of the vintage market and the announcement of magic 30.

      @MadMagicShow your stock equivalency is flawed. That's the equivalent of making sure stocks can never go down. If they made stocks the same way as the reserved list, then the economy would suffer. There is zero risk with the reserved list. The risk would be, "ooo they might reprint this, so should I sell?" With that gone its only about making money over collecting. If you want to collect to collect then it shouldn't matter about reprints, you have the more sought after version of the card. I personally have a path to exile that's worth 80 dollars, which is less then 10 cents with some versions. The versions matter. If they reprint the one I have? Oh well... that's the risk, THAT'S like the stock market. Wizards could completely go out of business and those cards you have would probably raise MORE in price because again, 99% are never used for play anyway.

      @@MadMagicShow never gonna happen. never was a binding contract and the class is what...everyone? you're forgetting the RL has already been reprinted and there were zero consequences. only a matter of time. The stronger argument is that the old heads at WotC are counting their RL card collections as assets that they themselves won't want to devalue.
