Without Steve gadds drums you can hear why he started with that very soft rhythm borrowing on what you would hear in an old western movie that from the 50s the scenes where native Americans would appear then the mood slightly lifts with a more straight 4/4 rhythm then over to the ride cymbal when the bridge starts and another lift in dynamics until the last part/jam where all the players get to put their own feel really opening up on a emotional level with the last few notes call and response to end with a definite step. Other approaches could have worked going with being aware and hearing the changes as they are happening but you can hear and see why David gilmour picked Steve gadd for this recording Jeff porcaro was one of those studio masters who have worked with him before as well and guys like Hal David were the godfathers of masters studio recording
