I am a piano "returner".
A long time ago, I used to play the piano. In fact, I spent a great proportion of my childhood playing the piano. Then I left home, and for a while I tried to keep up with my piano playing as much as possible. But this gradually tailed off until I was doing maybe a few hours of playing a year, or none at all.
In early 2020 I decided to go back to the piano, and in February the same year I bought myself a digital piano (Yamaha P515). Earlier this year, in 2024, I obtained my ATCL in Piano Performance and then performed my first ever recital (mistakes and all!) in October.

Lepas tu cuma nak practise aje. Jadi cover ni agak simple, tapi harap...
Sakura Piano Cover (Traditional Japanese Song)

I wanted to come up with something Japanese because of the Olympics (I know they're over now, but we still have the Paralympics coming up!) and have always loved this song, so I thought why not see if I do a cover of it? It's very short, I know, but this is how I remember the song. I like to think that the accompaniment sounds quite Japanese, too. Played on an old Bechstein that I've sorta "inh...
Seloka Hari Raya

Selamat Hari Raya! I thought I'd see if I could come up with a simple arrangement of my favourite Raya song, so here you go! I started it last night and messed about with it at various points throughout today in between meetings, work and talking to the kids (seriously, working from home is soooo much better for me!), so I'd say it's not too bad after hmmm ... a couple of hours' (ish!) work. Ex...
Chopin: Nocturne in E Flat Major, Op.9 No.2

I first played this as a teenager. It wasn't exactly my favourite piece then; I found it a bit boring actually (much like I did the first movement of the Moonlight!). When I started playing again last year, a friend asked if I could play this piece. I said yes, and thought, yes, let's revisit it. I did a lot of starts and stops with this; I couldn't quite shake off that I'm-a-bit-bored-by-this ...
Chopin: Waltz in A Minor, Op.Posth | #GlobalOdeToJoy #LangLangOdeToJoy

I only discovered this piece not too long ago, and it became another Chopin obsession (I know, I know, it's not Beethoven, but Chopin is bringing me so much joy at the moment as a piano returner). When I play this I imagine an old man, perhaps on his deathbed, remembering his life: childhood (that ascending arpeggio!), marriage and happy times (modulation to A major) and then eventually, death....
Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 2 (First Movement)

Beautiful piece, hopefully I've done it some justice. I found it somewhat off-putting as a young pianist (all that RH accompaniment! The melody in the pinky finger!), but when lockdown happened, I found a new appreciation for this piece, especially the control needed to really bring out the melody (mind you, there's still lots of room for improvement). Played on my Yamaha P-515.

This is one that I used to play from before (I think I learnt it when I was 14 or thereabouts). I have no idea now what it's called or who it's by - perhaps a Richard Clayderman? It was my late mother's favourite piece, and I remember having to play it over and over again for her, so much so that I memorized it ages ago, and it remains in memory even throughout the piano wilderness years (aka n...
Chopin: Prelude in E Minor, Op. 28 No. 4

I love this piece. One of Chopin's "easier" pieces, but I struggle to play this with the depth of feeling it demands. Chopin wanted this played at his funeral; I felt it was the perfect piece to obsess over during lockdown! Played on my Yamaha P-515.
The way they all paused for a second before the Applause!!
I love the way you play the piano, I want to learn to play the piano and you have inspired me.
Thank you so much :-)
Wonderful. I did Grade 1 in 1987 and loved listening to the Grade 5s practicing this. I later learnt how to play the right hand only. Now I will look for the sheet music and learn the whole piece.
Finally someone is playing well
Ah so pretty. (Can oso do RnR version?).
It’s very relaxing, thx for upload!! I think i heard this song being played with koto, but im not too sure.
Thanks for dropping by and listening! And yes I think it would normally be played with the koto. There's a lovely violin version as well by Maria Kaneko Millar which is now in the violin ABRSM syllabus for Grade 8.
Beautiful ☺️ Amazing performance 😀
Thank you for dropping by and listening 😊
So lovely.
Thanks Lena 😊
I also did this back in 1987 for grade 5. Recently picked up the piano again as likewise been without for over 30 years. This song always stuck in my mind but have lost memory how to play it. Will have to see if I can find the sheet music somewhere. Great to hear it again!
Thank you! I like that there are at least three of us who did this for Grade 5 in 1987 😊 It's such a lovely piece too.
Nice!
Thanks :-)
Beautiful! Do you like the action? Not too heavy? Thanks!
Thanks :-) Do you mean the action on the P-515? It's pretty good actually. Not too heavy for me (I used to have a regular keyboard and that was far too light for me, this is much better). I've noticed some stickiness occasionally but haven't yet worked out if that's the keyboard itself or some aspect of my playing.
@@pianofourty Thank you very much for your reply. I hope you get the sticky keys fixed. I think Yamaha has the best overall quality, but somehow there's apparently always going to be something wrong 😷 If you have the time, might I ask, is it true that strings and pads can't be sustained using the pedal?
@@Pe6ek I normally only use my P-515 for the piano, but I did try strings earlier, and as far as I can tell the pedal does work on strings too.
@@pianofourty That sounds great. Thank you very much for your reply, I very much appreciate it.
Yes, I did it in 1987 :) Grade 5 :) Good performance :)
Thank you :-)
