Hi - I am Graham - I engage in divering (all activities associated with diving but not limited to diving) and I teach technical diving all over the world - many non-native english speakers struggle with pronouncing "graham" so I often just get called GB.

How to shoot an SMB on a CCR without having your lung come out of your nose
Diving CCR presents a challenge to shoot an SMB. If you're doing dives inn the ocean you'll need a big (1.8m / 6ft) SMB and get it full so that it doesn't drag you around.
Basically, the best way to really fill the SMB is to use an inflator and this also means no messing around with the loop.
I'll make a team SMB vid soon - that's way quicker, slicker and arguably safer.

Rotations are an important skill for when you have more than 2 deco/stages

Here I rotate at 6m, with scooter and 3 deco tanks after a 90m dive with 40min of bottom time. People stress about rotations but really its all about the basics (trim, buoyancy, position and from that awareness) - I could do a step by step guide to this - but ultimately these kind of skills are best learned in a class not on the youtube. One free tip - keep your head up :) More divering awesome...

Sunk by UB-73 June 25, 1918 RMS Orissa now rests at 115m more than 50nm journey from our base in fanny's bay, Donegal. We start and end at the bow of this magnificant ship wreck. This dive was much more moody and a great contrast to SS Justica that is 45m shallower, with way more more ambient light due to sunnier conditions and aforementioned depth of water (70m vs 115m) - th-cam.com/video/O-Ay...

In the 3rd scenario with 3x deco gases why do we need to use 35/25 helium mix if you can safely use normal air to ascend from 56m to 36m ... you will be spending there ~7minutes so there won't be too much of a risk of narcosis if you are seasoned diver.
you can use whatever gas you want - I think you'll find a huge difference in numbers that a deco program churns out for air vs 36/25 - I don't believe there is any imperical support for people being able to adapt to narcosis. If I bailout out I want the clearest head possible not to mentional potentially synergistic o2, narcosis, co2 and decompression issues
Ridiculous how something that costs so much isn't more resilient...
Having just got back into CCR, this is both timely and really useful. I have been much more conscious/deliberate in using the drysuit to offset squeeze only the last couple of dives.
glad you found it useful
The sudden increase in buoyancy for a true freeflow could be hard to manage without immediate venting of the loop (e.g. via nose and/or lips). This is one reason why some instructors still teach nose/mouth venting + dil flush drill (incl. exhale dump open with right hip upwards) while closing the O2 valve, prior to the bailout. But YMMV. With a BOV it is never too early for sanity breaths.
Pretty sure that’s what I talk about (venting volume from mouth). You can’t empty counter lung and shut o2 at same time as they are on the same side. Furthermore, a bov is not gonna help as now you can’t vent the loop via mouth (or nose)
@@gbdivering yes we are venting thru nose/mouth while closing oxygen, which is an immediate response to the buoyancy change. Then dil flushing while on loop, further managing buoyancy. Other instructors also teach an alternative method of bailing out first and closing oxygen, then venting loop via pull cord only. YMMV depending on the buoyancy situation
Another example where BOV reg is great, kind of a no-brainer, better in almost every way compared to a necklace reg (aka poor man's BOV ...)
Bov doesn’t help at all since your primary issue is the excess buoyancy
@gbdivering this is in support of your very quick and convenient bail out to BOV at 0:20, which is maximally quick and tidy, allowing for a quick valve shut and loop dump via counterlung OPV (right hip elevated). Though perhaps slightly less quick re: buoyancy as the on-loop close / flush / dump reaction. A distant third place goes to anything involving a necklaced or staged regulator.
I haven´t tried this, but nylon tends to stretch quite a bit if wet. You can observe this phenomenon in the nylon threads you fix your bolt snaps with, and this is also the reason why your nylon tent will become limp in the morning from internal and external condensate, even if it hadn´t rained. Therefore I´d be concerned that this technique might cause my mouthpiece to leak or even come off, and the only factor preventing this from happening might be the snug fit between the second stage and the rubber of the mouthpiece itself. I´d rather find a rope material that doesn´t stretch in water. This tendency to stretch is a crucial factor why you always should melt down the ends into the knot, otherwise any knot from a nylon thread would come off as soon as you hit the water, even more if it´s braided cord. Otherwise, thank´s for your great videos, I am feeling equally entertained and educated on a high level. Thumbs up!
The braided nylon doesn’t seem to stretch and if it does the mouth piece never leaks at all :)
nice video! what strobes do you use on the shotline?

Did you get rid of the bov? Also if you do get tipped over with the D7 setup is it hard to get in trim again?
I dive both bov and dsv without any preference … just what my hand comes to first during setup (or what students/teammates have). If you set your harness properly you will not get tipped over - control your equipment don’t let it control you :)

@@gbdivering I absolutely loved diving on the Nagato...all the history. The accommodations were comfortable. I enjoyed the afternoon swim in front of our rooms. You knew it was dinner time when the shark fins would appear in the bay. Another memorable event was getting to the bottom. We did that as fast as possible as we were diving Air and deco was 75% O2 hung from the dive boat on a trellis of sorts. Anyway, during one dash to the bottom we saw two sharks swimming up to meet us. They passed me and one shark head butted my friend in the gut. He didn't bite, just a head butt. It sorta frightened us, but by the time we reached the bottom we were so under the affects of narcosis that we brushed it off.

I just wanna say a big thank You for doing all these videos, they are nothing but awesome! Keep them coming 🙏🏽. I know 2 Swedish’s guys who took your CCR 2 class and they were thrilled 😄
Thank you :)
Very interesting video. I was always told that using your lungs for buoyancy is the proper way to do it and a skill you want to master as you improve your diving skills. Rarely ever touching your inflator is being seen as a good indicator for having mastered your buoyancy skills. I guess this is kinda true/viable as long as you only consider recreational diving, but it certainly gets you in trouble on a rebreather where you can't use this technique anymore. Thanks for sharing this very different perspective on the topic.
When you get to heavy tech or rb your lungs are ineffective - in rec diving you will still benefit from proper, precise buoyancy control in breathing and relaxation which will translate into better situational awareness and most importantly fun :)
Do you run CCR2 for 6 or 7 days if you have non tech2 divers on the class? As tech1 divers are missing bottle rotation skill, t2 deco theory and hypoxic protocol
In my experience there is no difference between students with or without T2 - so same 6/7 day schedule eitherway. CCR2 is a hard class regardless
@@gbdivering tnx. I saw it’s a hard one but I also noticed it’s a very fun one :-)

Awesome video! I am GUE CCR diver and I am looking forward to dive at Malin Head this summer. 🤗

Thank for the video. However, you should also close your nose when you do a prebreathe. False negative could be a real issue here
Thanks for your comment and I agree partially… Somehow if you don’t know how to control your airway then you can close your nose (or wear a mask). I would suggest developing airway control and awareness of what the rebreather is doing and why it’s not working (eg nose breathing)
Love the humour and super informative video. Subscribed!
How much water do you put inside the suit for testing?
1-2 L soapy water
Hi Graham, is there a particular reason why you don't do the bottle rotation at 6m? So you can clip off both the bottom stage and the 50% to the leash and only have the 100% on your chest?
That kinda depends if the 50 is heavy or not … the last thing you want is a heavy leash
Ahh yes of course, thanks for the response!
It occurs to me that you should order this stuff ahead of time! If you wait until you have holes you're gonna have a bad time.
