This is fantastic ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for your kind feedback, Warmflash!
Catching this on the replay - super helpful! Lisa is a wonderful teacher! It came around at the right time while I'm drafting a new project. Much gratitude for the post!
Hey there Jen! Thank you for your kind feedback. Lisa is, isn't she? We'll share your feedback with her. We're glad this was helpful :)
Thanks for this. The point that resonated: asking if the reveals are for the discovery writer to help them understand or learn more about the story they're writing. I combine a mixture of plotting and discovery and have definitely 'worked out the story' during the reveals! Love the Character First approach.
Hey Lita, thanks for watching and sharing what resonated for you :) Sounds as though you have a great process 👏
I am writing about actual historical events. Can I plot a literal timeline of events that I can then use to plot my novel? When I can see what happens where and with whom, I can see how the subplots fall within the timeline. Thank you.
Hi there, you sure can 🙂 The timeline tool is very flexible as you can name your plotlines and story unit columns anything you like. So for example, you could name each story unit heading by day, month, year, or some combination of the above. Let us know if you have any other questions!
Yeah, I went to get the update today, and well.. now I'm locked out of Ye Olde Plottr
Hey there, so sorry to hear this! Please log a ticket at plottr.com/support or email support @ plottr dot com and our awesome support team will assist you.
I have to agree with some of the other comments in this thread. I deliberately downloaded the trial because I thought Plottr would provide the solution for managing books within a series. I followed your video but was sorely disappointed when I realised that the rollup to the series timeline was created entirely manually. I think your methodology is excellent. re creating the series arc first and then adapting your book arcs to fit within the greater series arc. However, as there is no direct linkage between the two views, the idea of having to duplicate data between the two views with no linkages is making me reconsider further evaluation of plottr. Particularly disappointing is the fact that comments pointing out this shortcoming in plottr are now over 2 years old. I would have thought it would have been an obvious feature to implement . The fact that it hasn't been indicates to me that management and development of a series of books functionality is not really high on on your developers priorities. Best solution I've found so far .. but as a result of a 15 minute play, falls well short of what i'm willing to pay for.
Thank you for your honest feedback. This is an older video, there are several features introduced since that will help you migrate data between books in series view. Plottr into Plottr import lets you save a Plottr project and import it into another Plottr file, choosing what to import. That way, you could (for example) create plotlines for a single entry in your series, save the project, and import that into a broader series project file. You can also save your own custom templates, so you could save the scene cards of one book as a custom template from the timeline, then use that template when creating another book in the series, importing that data quickly. Character data is shared across the whole series n Plottr, and you can tag characters with which title they appear in as well. If you have any more specific feature requests and suggestions, please share them with our support team on plottr.com/support. Thank you!
@@Plottr Thank you for taking the time to reply. I didn't know about the import a plottr file into a plottr file. I've been opening two instances and manually dragging content across from one file to the other (which also worked well, though it physically does MOVE rather than COPY the content across. 😊
I like it and will start using it immediately. Thank you
Hi Dan, that's great to hear! Thanks for sharing your feedback.
I hate to admit to this, but my story comes to me in vivid scenes. This part is normal for a pantser. But the scenes come to me not in a series. I wish they did. No, they just drop into consciousness beginning middle end completely out of order For a long time I’m trying to figure out what the story is about. Suddenly I do. Are there other writers that write non-serially then stuck with pulling it altogether?
There's nothing wrong with that, Joe. You might find dropping those scene ideas into scene cards in Plottr, then having a story structure template on another plotline and moving them around to see where they work with the structure could be interesting. That could help you find a sequence that works for you.
Awesome thanks for sharing!
Great improvement.
Thank you, Roberta!
This is exciting. I'm wondering, is it possible to create new cards in the Fulltext view and then go back and organize them on the plotlines after? This would work much better for how I brainstorm books.
Hi Talena! Thank you for your question. It isn't currently, but there is Word import with formatting that imports summaries to scene cards and plotlines which functions in a similar way to what you've described. We have a video with links to templates showing how to set up your Word document here on our channel.
@@Plottr Thank you. I found that one after leaving this comment. I'll make use of that for now. 🙂
I think this is a really cool improvement and I appreciate that there's a legacy button if I prefer to use the older version. One thing I was wondering about however, is that in the legacy, there was a side bar for navigation. However, that doesn't seem to be an option in this new one via the fulltext view. It would be fantastic to have a navigation tab so you could jump to whatever the relevant chapter is instead of having to scroll through all your content until you reach it. Always enjoy seeing these improvements!
Hey Liselle, thank you for this great feedback! We'll share it with the dev team.
Can you use card colors in the full-text view? I couldn't spot a toggle for that
Hi Frank, only plotline colors at the moment but we'll share your feature suggestion with the dev team. Thank you!
Is there a dark mode?
Hey there, yes indeed. If you go to Dashboard > Settings, you'll see a dropdown under 'Appearance' to switch between light and dark modes, as well as system (matching your system preference). This applies to the Plan and Fulltext views too.
I have to be honest I find this revamp quite unfriendly. I can change how I have been working for new books but it’s going to make a mess of my existing ones. Now this is perhaps my fault for working ‘wrong’. I personally find it helpful to see how the book progresses through revision. Sometimes I make substantial changes. So each ‘plot line’ is a draft. I also have a reference structure ‘plot line’ so I can keep an eye on pacing. My scene cards are coloured to match the tag for the POV. On the video in the outline view it seems the information I can currently see - assigned characters, locations, tags - is no longer visible. I have my POV characters identified through the tag. It’ll be a real pain when drafting if I can’t see this info at a glance in the outline view.
Hi, thank you for sharing this feedback! You can view the old outline view any time by clicking the 'Legacy' button in the ribbon on the Outline tab, so you can still view things that way if you prefer.
@@Plottr oh that’s good to know thank you
This looks very helpful. I am one of those who doesn't use card colors. I gather from this, card colors have nothing to do with plotline colors, correct?
We're glad to hear that! Technically, your cards in the "Plan" view will inherit the colors of your plotlines (this makes it easy to see which card comes from which plotline). If you use the toggle bottom right to change from "Plotline" to "Card" then each card will display its chosen color (and all will appear neutral if you have no individual card colors set). We hope this helps!
When you've done this reorganization, can you export the revised sequence to Scrivener?
Edit: Hi Jim, our apologies, our dev team has confirmed that isn't the case yet, but we will be back with an update on this feature request soon.
Hi Jim, another update here - the team has patched this into today's update, so now your revised sequence should export to your Scrivener file. Let us know if you have any questions!
I have your book How to Outline a Cozy Mystery and found it very helpful for my first cozy! Question--do your Beats strictly relate to chapters?
well done commentary! 🎉 really thoughtful and considerate and focused on the task at hand
Thank you for sharing your feedback! We're glad you enjoyed this video.
Ooh I can’t wait to jump back into Plottr!! The deep character arc will be fun too and much needed. It’s hard to walk the line between children’s chapter books and middle grade and high school reading if your characters are many ages. I don’t want them to be boring!
Thank you, Donna! Outline V2 isn't out just yet, but there's never a bad time to jump back in 😁
@@Plottr I’m patient! Plus I had some broken code in my doc but your great team fixed it!
I'm so excited and ready for this feature! I'm currently in the "copy/paste" process of combing a couple of my plottr files and it's tedious, to say the least. Plottr has really grown over the years and I'm so happy about that! <3
That's fantastic, Suzie. We're happy we could make combining your Plottr files easier! Thank you for sharing your feedback 😊
Okay, for whatever reason, the templates do not open for me at all.
Hi there, please email support on support @ plottr dot com and they'll be glad to help you resolve this! Thank you for letting us know.
I like the idea of this new feature. I think it could really help me. Thanks.
We're glad to hear that! More to come soon 😊
Thanks! We can't wait for people to use it.
Excellent, not only did I learn more about the software which I own and haven't used to its ability, but what a blast and great way to brainstorm a story. THANK YOU!!!
That's great to hear, thank you for your feedback!
I love these examples! And Plottr. I’m very grateful for the TH-cam videos too.
Thanks, Donna! We've got more for you on the way so stay tuned 😊
@@Plottr will do!
Thanks. This is excellent! So glad I found you.
It's a pleasure! Thanks for watching and sharing your feedback, Penny :)
These are so inspiring!
That's great to hear, thank you for the feedback :)
Plottr keeps getting better and better. Thank you!
We're glad to hear that, it's a pleasure!
I've watched a few of the videos, but it seems you guys are not really tapping into the teaching of the software's fundamentals. There's no true introduction to structuring a plot timeline or information on what each button or feature can achieve. Instead, it seems you guys are trying to teach how "you" would use the program rather than how it works. Based on the help videos I've seen thus far, most of the learning is geared toward non-fiction writers, whereas the consideration for fiction writers is not the focus. I believe your software may work wonders with all types of writers. Long story short, it would be so helpful if a video was made to focus on each button's fundamentals. Nonetheless, it would be helpful to make videos with ALL types of writers in mind, not only NON-fiction writers. With the current help videos, the teacher is beyond the fundamentals, making this program a little confusing to learn. It's almost like teaching someone how to structure a timeline in Adobe Premiere without first teaching them what each button does and how these buttons work in creating a simple and basic timeline. This is just my opinion, but you need a simplified video explaining how the software works. Then, the user can understand how to create their own layout. I will not give up on the software. However, I will simply have to learn as I go because the help videos do not point out this software's fundamentals and true purpose.
Hi there, we're sorry to hear that, though thank you for this valuable feedback. You may find the more '101' level videos here more helpful as they provide more of an introduction/overview: plottr.com/video-tutorials/ We also run free Plottr 101 training live on TH-cam every Tuesday at 12pm EDT where you can come along and get answers to your questions in real-time. We hope you can make one of these events soon!
@@Plottr Ok, thank you. I will look into the 101 vids now. Thanks.
@@Plottr The link took me to where I first watched the vids. But I found some more detailed videos on TH-cam. Thanks
Great stuff, Troy! Very helpful and I'll certainly use this. It's worth going deeper into the backstory.
It really is worth going deeper into your characters' backstory. Thank you watching and for your feedback!
Very excited for this! I have many characters who overlap in different stories! And places as well! Thank you so much for this!
You're welcome! Enjoy consolidating your Plottr projects :)
this is going to be great thank you
It's a pleasure, we hope you enjoy the new feature :)
sweet!! Now I can get into more trouble. Haha Great walk through, thx Troy
Enjoy, Demetri :)
Thanks so much Troy. I'm going to try this out right now. i'm very excited
Thank you! We hope you enjoy using this feature, let us know how it goes 😊
This is great information. I was going to ask you about supplying the demo file/template you were showing on the screen, but you have done so. Thanks.
Thank you, we're glad we could help! :)
Great new features, thank you! <3
We're glad you like them, thank you for sharing your feedback!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I've been waiting for this feature! Thank you so much.
It's a pleasure! We're glad to hear that.
Amazing work from y'all, as usual
Thank you, Donald! We appreciate this kind feedback :)
Thanks!
Quite possibly that most helpful tutorial you've published. I bought her course. It's making me rethink my approach to my next novel. Thanks, Troy
We're glad to hear that, Jim. Thanks for sharing your feedback! All success with your next novel.
Wow! That was really packed with genius 🎉 really thorough and easy to follow. Thank you for your pace and explanations, because this is so robust. Anybody reading this comment, you must join the class, it's an accelerator. Plotrr is the best.
Thank you for sharing that, Demetri! We're glad you're enjoying the class 🎉
Quick question: Do you think this 24-chapter outline would be helpful for a short story (roughly 10K words or less)?
Hi Brendan, thank you for your question! It might not be the best option as it's more geared to full-length novels, but we do have short story templates that could work better for that length.
Can I change the name of the story segment to something other than ‘chapter’?
Hey kentjensen, absolutely! The steps are as follows (to batch rename all without having to rename each one separately): 1. Click the button that says 'Structure' top right. 2. Where it says 'Name' and the naming convention of your story unit (in your case, 'Chapter'), click on 'Chapter', then replace the story unit word with whatever you want (e.g. beat, episode, etc.). 3. Click away and click 'Close'. Your story segments you have should now be renamed.
@@Plottr Excellent. Thanks so much for responding so quickly and even with a tutorial! Top marks to you. I will discuss Plottr with my writing partner today.
