SnapOn Punch Set Restored Using Only Basic Tools
Backstory: These punches where given to me by my grandpa (like most of the tools I will restore on this channel) and I really have no idea of how old they are. As you will see in the video I restored one of these punches a while ago because I thought it was the only one and wouldn't make a full video. But now that there is a few of them I decided to make a video and share it will all of you.
Tools used/Comments:
Wire wheel on drill: Used to remove heavy rust from one of the punches as shown in the video. You can do the same thing with just a normal wire brush just the wire wheel is faster.
Scotch Brite Pad: Used along with WD-40 to remove surface rust
WD-40: Used in combination with Scotch Brite pad to remove surface rust. Also the WD-40 protects against future rust. (My bottle of WD-40 became depressurized so that's why you see me holding it upside down)
Fine sandpaper: Used to remove light pitting
I know some people are going to be angry that I dident polish them and do a prefect restoration but tools are made to be used and not be wall decorations and Im trying to show people its easy to restore tools and you don't need expensive tools to do it.
Finally, Thank you for watching. If you like this video please subscribe as it allows me to make more videos in the future.

Federal Dial Indicator Restoration
มุมมอง 13Kปีที่แล้ว
Hi, welcome to my channel. This is my first restoration and I know my workbench creaks which is why you might hear a loud creaking sound occasionally, sorry for that :( Ill fix it for my next video. Backstory: I found this dial indicator at the back of a garage at my dads rental house. It used to belong to my grandpa back when he was a machinist. Around 1960's. The model number is B21 and it is...

    I think that "Rubberish Coating" was just grime and dirt built up from years of use.

    Should ever pry the indicator hand off with a screwdriver. Amatuer.

      I agree but I would rather not buy a specialty tool that I will use once especially if their are already internal issues that need fixed. Anyways it turned out just fine and I don't have a issue with the indicator's arm not returning to the same place every time so im pretty sure no damage occurred. Btw I sped up that point during the video and in reality I took my time to slowly loosen it and then carefully pry it off. But I appreciate your concern and if I do more of these type of restorations in the future I will buy a watch arm puller.

    That's about the same level of restoration I would do. Get it clean and working again. No polishing or powder coating. Good job.

    Just some pointers. Keep the video in real speed. When it's sped up it looks like it's a rushed job (even though it is not). I like the detailed description. You might try to de-yellow the cover with UV light and Hydrogen-peroxide. For first video it is really enjoyable and well made. Keep up the good work.

    • @cleanandrestore977
      @cleanandrestore977 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I know it's really hard to keep it one speed especially for stuff like the wire brush since it takes a long time and if you make it to long people will just skip it. About the yellowed acrylic that's what I did. I don't have a uv light so I lift it out in the sun but it's winter and cloudy here so it didn't work that well and when I asked around some people said that federal sold their indicators with yellow acrylic. There also might be a point where acrylic just can't be completely clear as I tried the same thing with a yellowed acrylic lid and let it sit outside a week and it only got more clear and didn't remove the yellowing similar to this case.

    If you are claiming to be restoring items then you need to be returning them to near original working condition. That body hammer would have had a ground and polished face so that it would not leave marks on the panel, at present it is unusable in its intended role. Early days, I'm sure you will learn as you go along.

    • @cleanandrestore977
      @cleanandrestore977 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree and thank you for your suggestion. I assume that you mean that the hammer side of it should be ground flat. Which I did end up doing off camera afterwards. Its just really boring to watch so I didn't want to include it in the video. Anyways I dont work in a automotive shop so it wont be used for that use case and will be more used for delicate work and light duty hammering such as using it with a small punch. But next time I will do that on camera if I restore something similar.

      @@cleanandrestore977 You never know when you might yourself need a body hammer to work a bit of sheet metal. Please don't use it with a punch as it will completely ruin the face - it looks like a decent hammer, worth keeping for it's intended purpose.

    The handle is the impressive part but the whole thing should work nice now. I am not into a polished hammer as they are for beating on things, not hanging on walls to look at!

      It has to be put in a solution to get all that rust off and then polished

    • @cleanandrestore977
      @cleanandrestore977 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not make it a mirror finish because that wasn't how it was sold originally and I like to keep it as original as possible. The rust was removed by the wire brush, and the oil is used to protect it against future rust.
