Shakuntala is a 1943 costume drama film based on the story of Shakuntala from the Hindu epic of Mahabharata. The movie was directed by V. Shantaram, and it was the first film made under his newly formed Rajkamal Kalamandir banner. It was also the first Indian film to be shown commercially in the United States.
Shakuntala is an adaptation of the famed 5th Century classical Sanskrit author, Kalidasa's Sanskrit drama Abhijnanashakuntalam (Of Shakuntala who is recognized by a token). Kalidasa is often considered ancient India's greatest poet and playwright. The film initially sticks to the traditional version of Kalidasa's play in the representation of Shakuntala, but later follows a "transformation" in the form of "empowerment of women" in Shakuntala's role, which is attributed to a critique of the play by the 19th century Indian novelist, poet and reformist, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.
The film starred Kumar Ganesh, Jayashree, Chandra Mohan, Ameena, Shantaram, Zohra and Nana Palsikar.
Released in 1943, Shakuntala is in Public Domain in India (and some other countries).
