Hydrochloric acid reacts with Zinc metal which is the metal that industry uses to make the galvanized products like nuts. But welding galvanized steel is very difficult and dangerous because the zinc fumes are toxic. So I am using this method to remove it and weld the nuts easily! For faster rust cleaning you can soak it in muriatic acid from any pool store for an hour or so, all rust and imperfections will burn off very quickly. Dry and wire brush to clean.

The upper movable jaw and the nut are painted with a cheap black paint.
Just curious...looks like you have metal working experience, why did you choose not to straighten the handle?? Good job cleaning and painting.
