I grew up in Santa Mesa back in the 60’s and 70’s near the area of Pureza, but I never really knew the story of Santa Mesa. This was my church. I went back home as Balikbayan, and the taxi driver didn’t know where was Stop and Shop when passengers asked him. He was surprised when I said to him ‘Oh no more Stop and Shop? and he said you know about the Stop and Shop? I said of course, I grew up around this place. I was on my way to see my old school, P. Burgos Elementary School. There was no more Stop and Shop but people still remember that as the Stop and Shop. I was born and grew up on Pagasa Street, corner of Ramon Magsaysay Blvd and V. Mapa Sta Mesa, Manila. It was bigger Street, wider and homes were far apart from each other. We didn’t need to use electric fan or aircon. Homes were better and we had so much air coming in around our doors and windows. When there were Typhoons, our place would be flooded because of the San Juan River would be overflowed across from the other side Tubo, neighborhood. Big water pipes from Manila Water Company. I had so much memories of this place. Fun and enjoyable moments playing with my neighbors and other kids who lived on the other streets. Now, I don’t know what happened to my place.? Crowded, no spaces, more vendors everywhere on the sidewalks and pavements. No more beautiful homes with higher metal fences and gates. Now, you see more tricycles everywhere and loose electrical wires hanging down. People, decided to name it ‘Spaghetti Wires.’ Very sad. They developed it as commercial neighborhood. The beautiful Sta Mesa looks too small, crowded, trash everywhere especially when another video was shown Teresa Street back there were full of Trash. The neighbors didn’t care. Mabaho tingnan doon sa may riles ng train. Yon skyway bridge ay napakataas. Bakit? Constructions everywhere to improve? Thank you for showing my old place. Be careful and make sure you stop to drink so you don’t get dehydrated. Maraming salamat po. Maganda ang video. Stop and show the street’s names as you are approaching it. Without doing that is so hard to follow. The jeepney’s sign would say San Juan/Sta Mesa to Quiapo and vice versa. November 5, 2023, Sunday from California, USA 🇺🇸.
