The Getaway Zone
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 มี.ค. 2021
Join us as we travel in our Zone RV Caravan to destinations around Australia. We are Paul & Deb, currently semi-retired and enjoying travelling around the Eastern side of Australia for 4 months each year until we retire and begin our big lap in January 2025.
We are equipped with an off-road and off-grid Caravan which allows us to travel to locations away from the popular tourist destinations and into the remote areas.
We commenced this channel for our family members (mostly our mums) who miss us while we are away and like to watch our adventures. We have made channel public and now focus more on providing helpful information for other travellers about the locations we are visiting.

Preparing for traveling full time around Australia in our Zone RV Caravan .
Hello everyone, and welcome to a special episode of the Getaway Zone!
This time, we’re doing something a little different. Instead of our usual format, where we share our adventures from our caravan while on holiday for three months each year, we’re excited to bring you our very first episode as full-time travellers on the road. Most of the filming took place in our home in mid-September 2024, but by the time you’re watching this in January 2025, we’ll be fully immersed in our nomadic journey.
In this episode, we’ll discuss how we prepared to transition from homeowners in the suburbs of Townsville to full-time nomads exploring this incredible country. We’ll cover important topics like whether to sell or rent our home, what to do with our belongings (including our second car and furniture), and how much it cost us in preparations. I can say one thing right now, it’s more expensive than I expected just preparing to go. We will tell you more about that during the episode.
If you’re considering full-time travel or just curious about it, this episode is for you!

Changes such as more solar on the roof, removing the outdoor kitchen from the front tunnel boot, and ...

This was such a great episode guys thanks! Looking forward to your lap.
Thanks Jacqui, glad you enjoyed it. We are currently on day 4 of our travels making our way South along east coast of QLD headed for Tasmania.
Another great episode!! We will all miss you both. Safe travels, and look forward to your next episode.
Thanks Chels, we will also miss family. Mum is already working on weaving a return into our travels.
We have just started our first adventure. Left Rockhampton Queensland 31/12. Made it to Moura and now have car problems which can't be fixed till Monday. We are in a caravan park. Not stressing here. Still excited to continue our adventure. Definitely will be following u both.👍🏻👍🏻
It is exciting times. Bugga about the car, but these things can happen and sounds like your handling well. All the best hope your moving again real soon.
My husband Hugh and I are 66 and 64 and are just in the midst of choosing a caravan and my favourite is the Zone. We have ordered our new car as the Lexus would be able to tow the van. You have inspired us to jump in and start to enjoy our retired life.
Hi Jane & Hugh, we are very happy with our Zone. It has had a few minor issues, but Zones warranty is very good and they have been handled quickly. I doubt you would regret a Zone. Nice of you to say we have inspired you to hit the road. Do have fun and maybe we may catch up at some point.
Great episode, good luck on your travels, looking forward to following your trip.
Thanks Sharon 😊
We are iplanning on doing several monthly trips. I can't tell you how valuable and insightful your video was. A really true exit plan. Loved, LOVED every minute and will be delighted to subscribe to see more. 🏆
Thanks guys, that is such a nice comment. 😊
Thanks for the video! We leave Port Macquarie for Tassie on 10/1 for 3 months. SOT on 15/1 day sail. Maybe see you there!
Thanks for watching our channel. We may very well see you over there 😊 come over and say hello if you see us.
We have just started our two year lap. We had to organise everything from NZ. Flew in mid-December with our wee Shih Tzu dog. Although it all felt massive prior to leaving home - storing our furniture, renting our house, storing our second car, getting everything here - 6 suitcases etc, it is all so worth it. We have had time in the Mornington Peninsula, Wilson’s Prom, and are now at Lilydale doing the Yarra Valley. Can’t wait to follow your travels.😁🌺
Wow, organising and preparing from the NZ, makes our preps sound much simpler 😊 Good luck and come over and say hello if you see us around.
@ likewise - white Australis caravan and white LC300.😁🌺❤️🐶
Eyes peeled 😊 we will be in Victoria around January 20.
Very informative video guys, Happy New year and sare travels. Looking forward to your Tassie videos.Cheers😊😊
Thanks Leon, We are excited for Tassie adventures and walks.
Thanks :)
Thanks for watching 😊
Lovely Ep and advise guys, If you have timber furniture in your shipping container I hope its off the ground or sprayed under and around it or otherwise white ants mite get in it.
We have a little bit of timber, and did think about doing just that, but as the container went onto a cement slab we changed our mind.... Now I am wondering if we should do it 😊 thanks for the tip Craig.
@@The_GetawayZone If your container is sitting on concrete that should be fine as long as there is no big cracks in it, Sorry to alarm you I only know as we had some lovely timber in a container and White ants got in, lucky I found them and sprayed them .
Thank you. A very interesting video. We will be watching your updates. Happy new year and safe travels.
Thanks for your kind words Dot. Happy New Year to you also, we are certainly excited and looking forward to our journey together.
Safe travels .
thanks guys. You too 😊
Hi Guys, we have just discovered your channel and are keen to follow your travels. Hey, I noticed that you have a screen over your rear vision mirror - is that for the Zone rear camera? Regards TnT
Hi Tnt, Correct, its a screen for the rear view cameras on the Zone Rv. The Zone comes with the "Safety Dave" twin cameras and you have an option to have the screen attached to the rear view mirror or as a monitor on the dash.
@@The_GetawayZone Thanks Paul. We are picking up a new Zone in April 2025 (we are in Perth), so we might see you on the road. Enjoy your retirement. Regards TnT
@@tnexm660 That would be nice 😊 we will get to WA but probably in 2026.
Great voice Deb. Love your videos.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. 😀
Hi we are enjoying your vlog BUT please use your clip on microphone more (we are watching from 11 mths ago and it's so hard to hear what you are saying!)
@@kimvanraalte8233 thanks Kim, yes I admit we have been slack in wearing those mics and some of the sound on later videos is even worse. We are determined to be more disciplined now though 😁
Great video, thanks for sharing
Thanks Debra, glad you enjoyed it. 😊
Another great episode. Beautiful scenery, lots of dirt roads. I hope you both have a great Xmas and new year. Looking forward to seeing your new adventures next year.
Thanks Manny, we are looking forward to see more of this beautiful country of ours.
Don't you love Google when it sends you up a dud track. It's happened to us quite a few times. It's not fun with the caravan attached.
Yep 😊 We were actually quite enjoying that side track until it stopped at a dead end road leading up a mountain.
Another nice calm episode, how good were those sculptures, some people are just so talented. We had 5 nights at Halliday Bay in July, the week we were there a large southerly cold front came through, before that it was picture perfect and I managed to get two swims in while the tide was high. There was a group of grey nomads from Victoria that had set up there for approximately 9 weeks to play Golf, ride there bikes and play cards, sit around there community camp fire, a very quiet location, and very restful, not sure I could do that length of time without some good cafes etc. All the best for 2025
Thanks for your comment. The Victorians were still there when we were the at the end of August and they certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves. It was a beautiful location, and great place for a swim.
Great voice Deb. When will we hear Paul bang out a few tunes? Glad Paul's a great photographer 😊
Thanks Damian, its hard to keep Deb off the stage when the Mic is open, I on the other hand... lets just say I will stick to the photography 😊
Thanks for sharing ❤
thank you, and thanks for watching 😊
What a great episode. Has to be one of your best. Beautiful photos of the wildlife and amazing scenery. And great singing by Deb. Looks like an amazing place to visit. Safe travels.
Thanks Manny, it was such an enjoyable location, and of course the wildlife and birds made it more enjoyable for me 😊 and Deb had a ball singing.
I grew up in Aramac back in the 50/60’s
We only briefly saw Aramac itself, but the area is enjoyable and loved the roadside camp up on the range.
Great video. Lara Wetlands looks fantastic. Love the bird photography 👌🏻
Thanks Kath, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there, and glad you enjoyed the bird photo's 😊
Loving your western QLD trip, we are going next year. Can you please tell me what time of year you were out there? Also looking at getting a Zone.
Thank you, its always nice to hear people enjoy our videos. We do love the western areas of QLD and are looking forward to seeing much more next year. We were travelling during August in the outback areas, around 18th August for Yaraka. I am doing up our next video (very late) for Lara Wetlands and its around 24-28 August. The Zone is a great van and we are very happy living in it, part time this year, and full time from December onwards. Cheers
Great shots BUT get a wind microphone.
Hi thanks for your comment, I agree it annoys us too. We broke our microphone a few episodes earlier but we have a new one now. One more episode with the crap sound 😢
Another great episode guys with beautiful drone footage and great bird photography. look forward to your next episode. Safe travels.
Thanks Manny, one more episode for this series and then we are home packing up the house ready for full time travel starting January 2
What a great place, thanks for sharing your experience there! Amazing bird shots too😊
Thanks, we thoroughly enjoyed Yaraka, a bit of a surprise for us.
love your videos and the shots of the birds at the end. well done. Harold
Thanks mate 😊
Lovely ep and countryside guys
Thanks Craig, it is a beautiful country we live in. Love the outback.
Bearded Dragon
Ah, thanks, I was leaning towards the Bearded Dragon, but not with a lot of confidence. We did see at least 8 to 10 from Eromanga through to Yaraka.
Another great episode 👍I did notice you had a mount on the windscreen behind the mirror is that for your GoPro or to hold the mirror up? As we are having issues with the safety Dave monitor clipped on the mirror it will tilt the mirror down especially on rough roads
Thanks guys. The mount is for the GoPro. However we were also having similar trouble and managed to find a little grub screw that tightens the mirror. It can still move if we get a long stretch of corrugation, but its much better now.
@@The_GetawayZonethanks for that I’ll have another look at our mirror
Paul & Deb, Enjoying your trip. Great photography. How are you guys finding the 600ah battery capacity with the 1240W solar? Is this capacity suitable for your requirements? Did you have to do suspension or GVM upgrade to your vehicle? Jeff
Hi Jeff, thanks for your comment, we do both enjoy the photography. We are finding the 600AH and 1240W solar to be fantastic. To be fair, we didn’t have a lot of cloudy days in this trip, 24 hours of rain followed by a few cloudy days. I found even on cloudy days (not full rain) it was still putting in 10 to 20 amps input, and on a sunny day up to 65AMPS going in. The lowest we had the 600A battery was down to 70% on a day of clouds, cooking, lots of general battery usage. The 1240W fills it back up so quick it amazes me. In regard to the vehicle, we purchased it 2nd hand and it did have heavier suspension already fitted. We took it in to engineering and got a 10% GVM upgrade which suffices for us.
Another great episode. Lovely scenery and photography. Safe travels.
Cheers Manny.
Isn't the sand dune stunning? Hope you stopped in Opalton as well, we LOVED noodling for Opals there :D Thanks for another great episode.
Those sand dunes were amazing. No we went west so we missed Opalton, but you have to leave places for next time 😃
@@The_GetawayZone True! 😆🥰
another great video, lovely scenery, and love the birds especially the Australian ring neck. Looking forward to the next Video. All the Harold
Thanks Harold, I was happy to see the Ringneck and the Spinifex pigeon, but only a quick glimpse of the ring neck unfortunately.
Another lovely Ep and spots guys
Thanks Craig, glad you enjoyed it 😊 We enjoy the Australian outback.
Lovely Ep guys
Thanks Craig, we appreciate your comment 😊
Thank you for another great video, and yes show us more photos of the wild life including wild gyrocopters etc. Your videos are stepping up to the mark every time, looking forward to the next one, Harold.
Hi Harold, thanks for giving us feedback. We both take so many photos but put so few on 😊 Two more to go for this season. We have just arrived back home and about to get busy packing house ready for our lap of Oz in January.
I'm so jealous. What a great episode. Beautiful scenery, beautiful photos. Safe travels.
Thanks Manny. We do love the outbck.
Wonderful video. Welcome to the 'signature collecting community' :D
Haha, and what a great way t see parts of our country, at a bush pub! It was funny that the first time we heard of it was when we were at Tompine pub, and then a few days later we saw your episode which mentioned both the book and the Toompine pub.
First up , fantastic bird photos. Another wonderful series guys and loving your travels.
Thanks Damien, I do enjoy the chance to capture the bird photo's Glad your enjoying and thanks for your comment. Cheers
Thanks, lov it, I'm envious!
We are very happy with it. Thanks
Another great video. Really enjoyable. Safe travels.
Hi Manny, thanks for watching 😊
Thanks guys, another great video, keep it up, I'll see you on the next one. Harold
Thanks Harold. Next fortnight 😊
we also just had our first 4 day shake down, same issue with the lounge and kitchen blinds. We also have an electrical issue but not the same issue you had. I agree the Zone response and warranty approval has been seamless but that doesn't take away its still disappointing these issue aren't picked up through testing. My electrical issue is when the van is plugged into mains, the batteries are charging but the power in the van is randomly receiving the shore power to the outlets or microwave and sometimes it isn't. when its not we turn the inverter on and we receive power. Lets hope its a simple diagnosis and resolved as easy as your issues were. I'm dropping our van off to a redarc network service center tomorrow.
Thats definitely a strange one, hope it's fixed real quick for you guys. Yes, I agree. These issues can be disappointing, but if they get fixed quickly like ours was, you soon forget them and enjoy what a great caravan you have, as we are getting so much delight out of our travels. We might catch you on the road somewhere. Cheers
Another great video. Not the best start to the new Van. Hopefully no more problems. Safe travels. I look forward to seeing your adventures ahead.
Thanks Manny, we have been out of internet range the last few days. No problems since the shakedown service, its all going great. Cheers
