Justin was rescued by Animal Alliance in Lambertville, NJ after being set on fire in Philadelphia. He lost his ears, but is otherwise healing nicely and turning into a normal troublemaker kitten.

Download building plans for these feral cat shelters: fivercats.com/ Take a tour of feral cat shelters made by my husband for our community cats. We fill the houses with straw to keep the cats warm all winter long. Straw has less moisture than hay, which keeps it from freezing in damp weather. You can also line the inside with styrofoam sheet insulation. Be sure to get your neighborhood cats sp...
Cool video but a step-by-step on how to build it would’ve been great 👍🏼
Thank you for building the houses for the ferals. It is nice so many people are helping them. I have someone that built me a rubbermaid bin for the cats. So far they haven't used it yet but am hoping they will this year. One thing was helpful was not only having the straw in the house but also they got insulation board and put it around the sides and under the top of the bin to keep the space warm. If you haven't used insulation board, it will really help to keep the kitties warm. Wish I could make a house like the one you built, it is awesome. Thank you for helping the kitties; you are an angel on Earth!
I am super excited to build one of these…I will probably need two. And I’ve got to figure out how to catch a mama kitty & get her fixed or I will be overwhelmed with cats! 😂
It is very sweet to see men taking so much care of feral cats. Than you❤
Watching this in 2024… thanks a lot! I can only imagine how great these are in a New Jersey cold night.
I wish you were my neighbor❤️
Thanks a bunch! Gonna get some made soon. 🙂
No insulation?
You are a true HERO!!!
So sweet and humain. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent design. Is there a reason you havent lined the inner top lid with that metallic/reflective bubble wrap for increased heat preservation?
Thank you! Our plans cover just the exterior of the cat house so that people can customize the materials/straw filling needed for weather protection based on their specific areas.
Great cat houses 🏠 I really liked them
Any tips on continuing to feed ferals while keeping them safe from mountain lions? Thanks
That is a tough one! Your best bet is just picking up all plates, cleaning up uneaten food, and just generally keeping the feeding area as clean as possible to avoid attracting any other types of cats. Feeding during daylight and at the same time each day might help too. If the big cats come around and don't find anything after a few tries they might go elsewhere for food! Good luck!
Thank you so much for the video and construction plans! What are the inside dimensions of the shelter when built? And what are the outside dimensions? Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!
Hi! You can find the complete building plans on our website at fivercats.com - let us know if you have any questions!
Just built two shelters for this winter and installed WIFI cameras in them... www.youtube.com/@The1833FarmhouseFerals
Thank you for doing this for your wife and for the cats! Can you share what you used in the opening and closing of the house to keep the cold out? Thanks!
Thank you! We used heavyweight canvas to make the door flaps.
Job well done sir! 👌💯
Great idea
So wonderful!!❤❤
I am so impressed with how much effort people give to ferral cats. It is beautiful. I have just started helping my neighborhood ferral cats. Learned a lot.
I found your video, and plans, after I built my own design which is actually very similar. I wish I would have found this sooner. Your idea of using canvas for the door will come in handy. I have been struggling to decide on how to implement a functional door without resorting to the expensive plastic pet doors online. I do have a few important questions though: 1. Does the 18 -1/2" door/porch height work to keep racoons and opossums out of the house? 2. Same basic concern... how do you prevent racoons and opossums from getting in? Would a torturous path of some sort just inside the door work? 3. Why did you decide to use the rolled asphalt instead of shingles? Thanks. Your design is efficient and well thought out. I might build it just to see how it turns out even though I have something very similar but with a welded angle iron fame instead of wood.
Elevating and moving the shelter away from any buildings, dumpsters, or other sources of food definitely helps to keep raccoons and other critters away from the shelters. We found the rolled roofing to be easier to use, but shingles would work well too to protect from the elements and provide some insulation. Good luck!
Thank you for what you do
Thank you for the simple instructions on how to build these cat shelters. I have a question. After a few years, the legs are beginning to show signs of deterioration. Do you have any suggestions on how to replace the legs of the shelter without needing to disassemble the whole shelter? Thank you again.
Hi! Depending on how high up it goes - and how much snow you get, you could try just cutting off any rot at the bottom. Another option is to sister a 2x4 onto the leg(s) on the inside or outside of the leg for extra support. Hope this helps! Thank you for building a shelter!
Awesome
I want to buy one. I could make it but I have no tools or workspace
We do not have any shelters for sale at the moment, but you could give the plans to a carpenter or handyman to build from - they may have many of the materials leftover from other projects. There are also TH-cam videos with easy to make shelters from Rubbermaid bins - th-cam.com/video/lpW69fNzcjc/w-d-xo.html
Where do you feed the cats? We have raccoons, possums, & skunks. No matter what we do the water is nasty from them walking thru it & they will attempt to scare us from food. 1 cat seriously injured. I believe from the raccoons.
Raccoons are tricky! We feed away from the shelters and the biggest deterrent we've found is having a feeding schedule and picking up any uneaten food within 30 minutes (or as soon as the cats are done and away from the plates), and making sure no food, food dishes, etc. are left behind for wildlife to sniff out and encourage them to move onto other food sources.
I have made our cats in italy a house like this they all sleep together in there as it gets snowy a couple of weeks a year i added some strips of cloth at the entrance which keeps it all very snug thanks so much they really appreciate it and makes me feel secure they are all right thank you thank you
That sounds wonderful! I am sure the cats are enjoying it!
Great job!
Wow. Most men don't have such kind hearts. Bless you.
Cats do not like the straw. They want warm thermo blankets. In my opinion, the back door is not necessary it just creates a wind tunnel and is not sufficient for keeping heat in.
Blankets freeze in cold temperatures - straw works much better for keeping cats warm, dry, and safe! The back door creates an emergency exit to also keep cats safe. You can stagger the doors to create more of a wind barrier if needed, depending on where you're placing the shelter.
HI thanks for the video! So nice! Do you sell them?
Thank you! We do not have any for sale, but you could share the plans with a carpenter or handyman to have one built locally!
Love this ❣️
You are a very nice man, thank you!!!!!
Thank you for your work in keeping the feral cats warm in the cold New Jersey night.
Love the style of these cat houses. Thank you for the information video! ❤
It's a good idea to put cedar chips on the bottom because fleas hate cedar.
How wonderful! Thank you for being an angel of mercy for the abandoned cats.
Sure is 💚
VERY Nice!
Can you please tell me what the dimensions are of your house's? I'm in Pennsylvania and wanted to build a few and I'm trying to figure out how big to build them bc I don't want them to be to big but not to small either. Someone had recommended using totes but they just seem to small to be comfortable.
Hi! You can find detailed building plans on our website - and they can also be customized depending on your situation: fivercats.com
This is first year helping out feral and an indoor outdoor cat, do they leave their houses much and play out in the cold when not I'm their houses?
Hi! It will really depend on how cold it is in your area, how much snow you typically get, and how adapted the cats are to that weather already. We had a community cat who loved to roll around in the snow when it was sunny, but as soon as it started to get dark he would nest in the straw bedding in his shelter.
Thank you so much!
great!!
Constructive cool.
Clever
Thanks for the plans. Gotta make enough shelters for 20 cats. It is the weekend and I'm a carpenter's daughter. ( thanks for letting me be your shadow dad. John March Rest in peace)
Cat very nice and very beautiful ❤️
Thank God for the rescuers
Need to burn some people and send them to hell
Comments respectful with people like this give me a break
