    I had similar problems I had to change there food to a better more nutrient dense food just to let you know and reversed in in like 2 weeks but read the back of the chick feed your giving them it cost a little more but your chicks will be in better health when they start laying or ready for harvest

    Hi Dear, I saw your TH-cam channel video and understood that Very nice video. You have 353 subscribers but videos are not more watched and subscribers because your video is not SEO. I have analyzed and realized that your TH-cam channel is not progressing and improving. It is responsible for: 1. Channel videos are not properly SEO 2. Videos are not reaching the people 2. There is no rank tag in the Video 3. Video SEO score is 25 out of 100 but SEO score should be 90+ to rank video 5. Channels tags not good quality 6. No video tag and other technical problems Do you want all the problems solved? I can help you.

    Very nice run. I'm eventually going to do one similar as a secondary so I can switch back and fourth as each run recovers (grows vegetation), but like you said, time and money. Regarding hardware cloth, you only need to use that on the lower 3.5 feet - 6 inches buried to prevent digging and the 3 feet height to prevent breaches by raccoons, bobcats, possums and the like, as they can tear up chicken wire like its not there. The primary and extension my chickens have now are a $200 Amazon 9x13 and a 17x17 I made out of deer posts, hardware cloth, chicken wire, 2x4 headers to stop the wind from folding it in and 40% shade cloth for the roof; (I'm in FL). It's held up great against the winds so far. Feed Tip: All my birds get the same base food; 21% crude protein grind and I restrict them to roughly 4.2 ounces per bird, per day. Calcium is free choice so the pullets don't really bother with it until they start laying. There are plenty of normal pebbles around. I have meat birds as layers so have to be more strict with food. It's a little more upkeep but I should end up with a fast growing, meaty heritage breed over time.

      I was going to say the same thing. Phillips is just so testy to work with when using a drill. It be nice if we could get some reasonable priced hardened steel bits, but since almost every box comes with a bit it's not so bad. It's near wrecked by the end though, sometimes just before.

    She’s so good and calm while you’re working with her. Question. Now that you have spent so much time with her, is it going to make harvesting her harder? We would like to do meat chickens, but I become so attached to our chickens, I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to go through with the processing part. I wish I could be stronger, because it’s obviously better to eat your own meat chickens rather than Walmart meat. It’s also how God intended. I do believe God has been trying to prepare me for such a time. I fall head over heals for every one of my chickens. It rips my heart out when they die. 💔😔

    • @knoxurbanhomestead
      @knoxurbanhomestead 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a legitimate question, we dispatched her the next day and I did feel a tiny bit sad but not enough to stop me from doing it or broke my heart either. I think you should definitely raise your own meat, total difference from Walmart meat, for this, you definitely must grow a thick skin if you know you are the kind of person that would get attached and be able to separate your emotions to the fact that you are providing clean food for your family, besides, having a great amount of meat in the freezer saved up would help if the economy goes down the pooper because of what is going on in the Middle East. Be prepared.

    Wouldn’t lizards be good for your compost? They eat some of the organic material but leave behind their scat which is full of microbes and attract additional insects; both break down organic matter into basic nutrients.

    • @knoxurbanhomestead
      @knoxurbanhomestead 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Although they do eat plants mostly, they also eat insects like roaches and ants so I wouldn't want their poop in my compost but what bothers me the most is that they dig holes and throw the straw out of the pile.

    If you’re thinking of getting chickens I can’t stress it enough do research on the birds heat tolerance and I would only recommend heritage breeds they are in my experience just so much hardier when it comes to cold or heat. My heritage breeds are barely fazed by the 90+ and 100 degree humid heat in South Georgia. I have never lost a single bird to heat or cold because I only keep heritage breeds.

    I use 2 fans in their run (outside of fencing); we buy bags of ice and keep in a good cooler on the porch that keeps for about 3 days and I add pitchers of ice to their water trough a few times a day (they love ice cubes!) I also wet down their coop and run when it’s really hot. I give them cold fruits (melons).

    Can we run fans or sprinkler? What about a child's pool with a few inches of icewater? Plant your own trees, don't rely on nextdoor. Also, plant grass, it's cooler.

    • @knoxurbanhomestead
      @knoxurbanhomestead 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can run fans for them yes, I have heard that sprinklers are not a good idea because chickens don't like to get their faces wet, immediately they start sneezing, I've heard that can cause them to have colds and mess with their upper respiratory system. Chickens use their feet to regulate their body temperature and cool off easier if they can step in cool water. You certainly can use a kiddy pool with shallow water for them but my chickens won't jump in it, not all chickens like that method but you can try. So I do have trees over their coop and it provides them plenty of shade, I just take advantage of the extra shade the neighbors tree provides. So I do have grass in my yard that I just recently seeded but ita away from the chickens, I don't want to put grass in all of my yard because I want to conserve water as much as I can.
