STARTING OVER. A visual exploration of the aftermath of brain trauma, by Rachael Romero 2014
Rachael Romero made this series of images of herself as she struggled to reclaim her faculties following massive brain surgery in 2014. Her head had been through a lot of trauma over her lifetime violence, car accidents, falls and then the discovery of a massive brain tumor that had been growing, undiagnosed, despite a serial falls, episodes of disorientation and loss of words.
The after-effects of fifteen hours of surgery were confounding. Romero had to relearn to speak and walk, use devices and navigate a new life.
The soundtrack chanted by her friend Eisho Shugetsu Sudan, is a Baika, or poem, written by abbot 99 of Toshoji, Japan, about death, change, and gratitude that sustains us through loss, images by Rachael Romero made to reclaim her well-being as a person living with discomobulation after traumatic brain trauma: T.B.I.

What is "Zen"? In the very moment and individual try to reach something, to become something and identify himself or herself with something is not dealing with the Fact. It is caught in the ilusión of someone else and making it his or her own! So, what is the individual's responsibility to end this no sense?
You are so beautiful.
Beautiful.
Hello rachael is there a way i can get a copy of this book i am Angel nephew. I will pay you if i have too.
Hi Angel, of course. Can you send me your address Angel at: vfqwpk2z75@privaterelay.appleid.com (Use WHOLE address) thank you Rachael Romero
Excellent take on Zen - well explained and accurate. Zen and the self. It takes me back to last year when I discovered Ajahn Sumano in the Monk in th Mountain 6-part video series (TH-cam). Near the end of Part 6 he is asked about self. And he replied something like, "I've spent 45 years trying to find the self. But you know what, there was never anybody there in the first place!" Wonderful, enligtneing!
Hi I am 75 yrs old, locked up at Tempi, Magdalene laundry when I was 14 yrs. I was the youngest girl all others where 16 yrs plus sentenced by the courts. My parents due to police advice put me in there, I was know as FREE WILL. I was a slave for 20 months working in their laundry 5 days a week..no pay, disgusting food no counselling, no schooling,no love. I was lost, lonely, afraid and frightened. Hit by nuns, scorned by them, made to feel like a very low person by them. Forced into actives I WAS A SLAVE. This experience has shaped my life. Filled with shame and sadness. This was 1959-1960. I have tried to seek compensation but to no avail I would love to make contact with fellow inmates in OZ
How about the breathing technique ?. Some teachers say just focus on the exhale ie : th-cam.com/video/LL2XUTeoUsM/w-d-xo.html Please explain. Thanks in advance.
I just wonder how much of 'non enlightenment' in Zen comes from this need to keep these temples 'alive.' If you see a great Zen situation, you would know that Zen is different in every monastery. These people might say they are 'same' or seek 'same' as in 'Self Realization' or something that I saw in another clip 'the Still Point.' No one can adequately speak on either, though, except as something that exists in the moment, or something they are embarrassed about because they have NO idea what it is, and each 3 years or so, the gains are meager. I saw this great Zen documentary about Korean Zen, a 90 day retreat. THAT is a good place to check out. 'Zen Buddhism: In search of the Self.' There was even some 'dice' going on with the nuns as a New Year's Eve celebration. If Zen people want to be open and normal in their dialogues about Zen and their practice, they first need to understand things through vision/insight. And THAT is the 'fun' part about decades of practice. You know? Any Zen 'Master' who talks about the 'moment' is misleading the masses AND his students. You can learn something that takes a dedicated practitioner 8 years to learn or more in ONE instant. If you're looking for just one big experience to make yourself a 'Master,' you're setting the bar too low. Visions occur MORE and more powerfully, when you don't look to 'cash in' on them. So. You have to be interested in the NON-zen world around you. And 'gambling' for fun or dumplings is a great thing to have in ANY monastery. Korean Zen is where the action is, at this time.
I was in a catholic laundry not very long after I turned 16yrs. old. I will never forget. The worst thing I feel they made me do was to work at the hardest job, the washing machine, .whilst in I in labour for 3 day's. That was in 1968
That is what I witnessed. He endeavored to know by being himself
I wonder if this monk, knows this for himself. Or he has just read many books and is repeating what has been said before?
Anyone who practices can and should see for themselves. The point is not whether others do, but for you to do so.
takes a remarkable person to remark my super hero
Remarkable woman, my super hero! -Erving T. Batista xoxx
how could women do this to children??
extraordinary, thank you
One never gets over their time in those places
But if we walk back through the horror we can come out without rancor
they are all modeled on the same template. my experience was in Adelaide, SA
the chanting is lovely. what is it?
Thank you Rachael for sharing these wonderful clips and memories
Very well produced, very lovely
Well done!! As a girl I was in a Convent of the Good Shepherd referred to as a 'training school' complete with a commercial laundry in Manchester, England. Pity most folks only get to hear of the ones in Ireland.
Powerful and beautifully executed film!
Absolutely lovely. So glad you were able to do this. Thank you.
Vielen herzlichen Dank für dieses wundervolle Video. :)
Where is he, Daido, now? What is his present location? What is he doing now, that great Zen master? One teacher said "Only way to make your karma disappear is to make your consciousness empty." How to make my consciousness empty? Is it already empty or not? If not then when? If you are doing something now, then you have to do it, so JUST DO IT! Don't collect information like an encyclopedia. You are not a walking dictionary! When you don't know what to do, just do what you always do: eat, shit and sleep. Enjoy your life. Entertain yourself. Be creative, but don't burn out yourself. Otherwise you will become a crazy practitioner and lose precious human rebirth for ...e o n s. What a loss, huh? Have a nice day.
+dtseringdorje Everywhere and nowhere, he is
Thank you so much Rachel. love Yoshin
Hi Kat, I don't know if you are still unable to find web sites for women from the Magdalen laundries in Australia but here is a very strong organisation that represents such women It is called CLAN and you can Google it. Also I have made a video dedicated to the Magdalens in Australia. It may help to comfort you a little. I can give details of it if you email me. Paul Curwood ozibecozi@yahoo.com.au
life is a big red tractor.
hahaha
I remember seeing him drive that tractor around. He seemed to enjoy it.
Rome's disciples are still tax exempt! WTF?
How wonderful! As I look forward to my first visit to ZMM next month, this is a beautiful preparation for encountering the Sangha this wonderful man founded. Thank you! Namaste!
Rachael you are an incredibly strong and good woman. Thank you for sharing your story and your art. The suffering men subject women to for naught never ceases to amaze me. I'm so glad you survived. May you have peace, serenity and happiness at last.
Hi Rachael, I haven't been able to find any web sites for Australian women from the laundries. I keep coming up with Govt. sites etc., if you know of any could you direct me? Thanks.
thank you
Hi The Convent of the Good Shepherd Archives in Abbotsford VIC say they provide records of arrival and departure. They also have stories of fires etc to avoid providing them. I suggest you apply anyway as their refusal is also evidence. There are web sites for Australia women who were in the laundries. You might find others who can verify your experience. I would be interested to know how this goes. I know it is difficult and frustrating. They still deny out rights
I am a survivor of a Magdalene Laundry in Albert Park Victoria. I have just started making enquiries about this as I have suppressed these memories for the past 50 years. My initial contact to this convent has met with the disclaimer that their records from 1942 onwards are 'missing'.........I don't know what to do can you help?
The way of the tractor, leaving no trace, on soil needing nothing
The Buddha's teaching of Anâtman (lit., not-the-self) means that my psycho-physical body consisting of material shape, feeling, perception, habitual tendencies, and sensory consciousness is not my true self or âtman. The Buddha also said: Abandon desire for what is not the âtman or self" (S. iii. 78).
No.
Thank you Daido for being with us
I was never able to meet Daido Roshi but he inspired me to study zen and by listening to his dharma discourses online over the years really makes me feel as though I knew him. In Gassho Roshi.
now there's no comment
Because he was a scientist and he studied it. An artist and he looked at it.
How can he mentions universe when he not left the earth yet
it's states that above..thanks _/\_
Thank you john for putting me on the path. I will miss you.
@Anthonyxander Me to
I wonder where he is now... he must be like at least 17
@Anthonyxander Yes that is Genius, and oh so Zen :)
Real HELL
“The Buddha said the true self is always illuminating as Buddha. It is not limited to subject, object; it is beyond. True illumination is beyond subject and object. It is Buddha-nature. - Joshu Sasaki Roshi [Zen Notes XVIII No. 8]
@Suwai0303 O.K> Yes. Your art work and climbing, the creative process and growth you glean from all these experiences in life is the path, and though the "word" religion" is used, it is really a "way" and your way has, without being a formal one, transformed you...it is, so to speak, your religion. Your path. The focus and one-pointedness you place into all you do is what works and this is a spiritual practice. Enjoy.
