The Switch List
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 พ.ค. 2016
Welcome to 'The Switch List'. A TH-cam journal of my re-entry into Model Railroading after 30 years away. I plan to share my successes, failures, frustrations, and fun with the TH-cam Model Railroad community. I will be sharing my layout building journey, kitbuilding/bashing, scratchbuilding, scenery building, some electronics, maybe a little railfaning, and whatever else I come up with related to railroads, real and model.
I am modeling in HO scale, and I am modeling the Maryland and Pennsylvania (The Ma & Pa) in the Fall of 1951. I chose this date to maximize the variety of equipment I could run (much rolling stock was sold/scrapped in 1952) and loco 82 (SW9) was purchased in the fall of 1951.
Your comments and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged... I want to use this channel as a way to give something to the community that is useful, interesting, and entertaining.
You can reach me via email at theswitchlistchannel@gmail.com
Thanks and see you down the rails!

Arduino's are great for doing lots of things! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Oooh. Lights. 🤓. Pretty fancy technology. Happy modeling, brother. 😎👍🏼
Thanks, you too!
Thanks!!
You are welcome. Always a great time on the D&H. Harry really enjoyed his first time there as well!
Pretty awesome, Rick.
Thanks Brother!!!
Can you do a layout tours
Do you mean a layout tour of the railroad I shot this short on? I can ask the Layout owner if I can do that next time I am there. Thanks
@@TheSwitchList yes
Well, despite the mishap... sorted and done... and it looks great! Well done!
@@ModelTrainOutsider thanks Anthony!

Thanks for sharing. 👍👍. I hope to visit Steamtown someday.
It is amazing! I hope you get there as well...
Wow. Love it. Awesome footage, Rick. So much to see. Thanks for sharing your fun and excitement vacation. You deserved the best. Where to next? I can’t remember your next destination.
That was on Saturday and on Sunday we went to Steamtown so I’m have footage to put a video together of that and I hope to get that posted tonight. Thanks for watching Drew and the great comments.

It's what got me into model trains. Riding trains in Germany for a few years and staring out the windows. No stress, no road rage. More space.
@@ModelTrainOutsider riding on a train is a wonderfully de-stressing experience!
😢 yes it was depressing to see. Wait until I post the video from Steamtown the next day - sooo many old sad locomotives standing in various corners rusting away…. Thanks for watching
Those old F units looked so sad. Nice to ride along with you. Looks like a pretty big operation. Thanks for sharing. 👍
I replied to you Fred but it made a new comment instead of a reply... Here is what I said so you don't have to go looking for it: 😢 yes it was depressing to see. Good Morning Rick! I came by to see if the new vid was up. Didn't see it so I enjoyed this one! Thank you for sharing! Keep the good vids coming! Brian
Hi Brian, not up yet - was wiped out when we got back to the hotel Sat night and just crashed, and then it was up and off for a day at Steamtown on Sunday. The plan is to try and get the video edited and posted tonight. Thanks for coming looking for it, and watching this video instead!
I've got the same MRC 1400 power pack that I use for the same purpose, testing locomotives. What I want to do is hook up analogue volt and ammeters to it in order to help diagnose the locomotives. Any idea where / how I should be hooking these gauges up?
The volt meter can be attached right across the variable DC output terminals. The Ammeter has to be in line with one of the terminals. Since you mention you want to use analog meters, and I am assuming you want to be able to use the direction switch to run the locomotive under test in both directions, you have to switch the polarity of the connections to each of these meters, otherwise the needle will try to go in the wrong direction and this can damage the mechanism. Going from memory it might be simplest to wire in a new direction switch that has enough contacts to swap polarity to the meters when you change direction. It will be a bit tricky to do with analog meters. You can get some pretty cheap digital volt/ammeter modules on Amazon that can display positive and negative current and will make hooking this up much easier (www.amazon.com/diymore-Digital-Voltmeter-Ammeter-Red-Blue/dp/B08HQM1RMF/ref=sr_1_6?crid=11FGGKX1RALXH&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.nEizO_OD-dtjMU5JosZphju48IKhoGJ-aQUelFBmiOKp4Btb8OgrbGH6yd5vWlQYgnMUbXqxY9RorpQ9Mk3pTP0pxYsQTd7hEfJTgYirnxONyvGQXSwguQQeKhAi6MAes-GF5YdrljFKmJA48KKFjLaOFgvZZZiSQdgumqCy-X1lmmU7pWzCX331WCQDSXJRR9hAKSk1YZAd7-JiHZ6gCsE4CsDWQ8g-hRLK44FPmt4BCzE9GY8y8r-NdD-GKc3_91mJk4U6YJp_GxR0BnzWIIkkhE9S208vnoQH-RwhEHw.shrn9dIAkzxF48pWd068DUNtws7W09zPrA5qr-gYAgY&dib_tag=se&keywords=digital%2Bvoltmeter%2Bmodule&qid=1726969367&sprefix=digital%2Bvolt%2Bmeter%2Bmodul%2Caps%2C105&sr=8-6&th=1). Thanks! I just wish I could have caught the working wig wag signal it tripped!! Appreciate the view and the comment
I'm not sure but I think the name of the servo, "Tower Pro" wasn't mentioned in either video.. or I just missed it. I only mention it in case others are curious about that. I recall Larry Harper also did a video on a similar use of the servo in place of a switch motor. Some of your subs might want to check out Larry as well. Nice presentation. Thanks.
Thanks for the information. My servos are no name micro servo's I got from Amazon. I will put al ink to them in the final installment of this series.
The servo works well.
I actually have it installed now and it is working good. Just need to wire up the pushbuttons and dwarf signals to complete the last part of this series. Thanks again

WOW. Impressive
@@MLWQC thanks!
That is quite interesting.
Thanks!
Great video Rick. We use cards at our club and it’s super simple. One day I’d like to try JMRI. Oh, and also, nice to see a bunch of guys operate your layout. I didn’t know it was ready to go. You even have a phone! Where have I been?
Hi Mark, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, I have had 10 op sessions on the layout in the past 14 months. A lot of time and effort put into working out the car movement methodology but now it seems to be working well. The railroad is set in 1947 and there was no radio communication on the Ma & Pa -so the crews have to contact dispatch via the telephones at each town. Thanks again, Rick
I love using Arduinos for model railroading. I currently have 3 Arduinos for my shelf layout. Great update. Thanks for sharing.
@@harperlarry49 thanks so much for the comment.
Definitely an issue to solve and let's see how it works out.
Fingers crossed!! 😂
That was interesting. I only use my Arduino to run DCC-EX. Never tried to write code for it.
I have used them for a bunch of projects. Made videos for most. Speedometer, campfire simulator, mutliple structure lighting, and the Turntable controller I built uses one as well! Great little toys... Thanks for watching Fred.
Very cool. I did use a couple of IR sensors with Arduino connected to JMRI speedometer. I didn’t feel it was real accurate. I was getting different speeds on loco running at speed step 28. Not sure if it was loco motor or Arduino to JMRI interface. Gave up trying to speed match my old locos.
Interesting problem and an interesting solution.
Thanks! Working on part 2 where I show the Arduino circuit and code working on the bench... stay tuned!
very good
Thanks -- appreciate the view and the comment. Rick
Wow that is really interesting! Great explanation, thanks for sharing! 🙂
@@LJRLowevilleJunctionRailroad glad you found it interesting. I am very happy with how the railroad Op Sessions run using it. Thanks for watching.

cool system!
Thanks! It is working well for me.
That was a nice discussion and explanation, Rick! You have to make yourself happy, even if it seems weird to someone else. I have no experience with operations, so it is all interesting when channels do it or discuss their systems.
Thanks Anthony! Yeah, once I finally decided I was just gonna do it, it has been great. Thanks for watching!
That was very interesting Rick. Thanks for mentioning my simple database idea. I don’t yet get into identifying individual cars for my switching jobs. Take 4 full grain hopper from loc1 to loc2 and pick up empties. Half the jobs I have are just running full unit trains around the layout.
Hey Fred! Whatever way works for you and satisfies your goals - that is the right system. I thought your video was very interesting (and obviously inspirational as well!!). Take care my friend, Rick
I had not heard about that before, looks really good. Great video, Thanks!!🙂
