Hi everybody! It's been a whole YEAR since I posted my last video!!! College life has been pretty busy for me but I am BACK, ready to get more roller derby content out to you guys in 2024 (: Starting off strong, we have a video focusing on level 1 skills - All of the maneuvers you'll need to master as a newbie before you begin the BEST part about derbs (and probably one of the main reasons why you picked this sport hehehe)... Our first trip to ARD was back in February 2017- we had no idea what the rules were, but Human Missile Crisis helped explain what we were watching. Over the years, we've figured out what happening (Brawn F Kennedy helped too), but yours is the most comprehensive and easy to understand explanation of penalties and rules that I've ever seen. I’ve got my first session trying roller derby and I’m so excited. How do you find skating with glasses though?
i’m in the “learning the ropes of the sport but haven’t applied to join a team yet” stage and i’m watching all the derby content i can absorb. i kind of wish for some IRL examples of the penalties from real bouts. i know it would end up being so so so SO much more work - having to watch 101 different uploads to try and find examples of each penalty. but the gifs are helpful though!! thank you for this video!!

*laughts in two whistle jam starts, minor penalties and poodling* But seriously, i just rewatched this and it’s so well explained and put together. Every few months, I share this on our juniors page for the parents and newer kids. Last night we had some newer skaters struggling with the rules and I pointed them to this.

Not me wondering what color the refs call when they issue a penalty to a tie dye jersey skater 😂🤣
Well, it depends! 😆 In a game, the two teams should be highly contrasted colorwise, and easy to differentiate. But, in mashup or scrimmage situations, where it is team friends playing team friends, you may be calling out names, rather than colors. We typically split up darker tones to lighter tones … but if everyone is in darker tops … well … that’s when formerly sweaty mesh toppers come out! 😂 For new refs, the mesh toppers are REALLY helpful. (My first ref position was a green vs yellow mashup … the yellow-green in between shirts totally threw me off. 🫣)
So this was for YJRD's Punk vs. Pop game and we all had on tie-dye shirts HAHA I was on Team Pop and we wore rainbow tie dye so the refs just called us "Rainbow"😂 Team Punk wore black + grey tie-dye so they were "Black"... We did it for the vibes!!!🤣

Great video and loved the gifs. Only add is that skating nonderby and destroying the pack is always a penalty but skating derby direction and destroying the pack, you need to skate faster than the established speed of the pack. So if the pack is going 5 mph and you skate 10 mph and destroy the pack, it's a penalty. If you're skating 5 mph and destroy the pack, no penalty

Wait, what's the difference for ref hand signals for the penalties of Arms vs. use of forearms and hands? The ref has a fist for arms and an open hand for forearms & hands. Is one for blockers and one for jammers? Thanks
There is no “arms” penalty.

Thank you! And good question, but the answer is no hehe this video was created just before WFTDA released the new 2023 ruleset so it's based on the 2018 ones but luckily there were only some minor changes + updates!! If more new changes come about, I will think about making an updated vid (:<

Pro tip from AbNORMal: if you aren’t using your 7 penalties, you aren’t playing hard enough lol
Recently reffed a game where one of the players from my league got 6 penalties in the first half and during halftime all us refs were convinced that the player would get benched and if not, get fouled out in the second half. They made it to the end of that game with just those 6 to the amazement of basically everybody. Refs, players and audience. And it's not as if that player holds back!
