900 Global Sublime Focus vs Optimum Idol (Fixed Audio)
The 900 Global Sublime Focus released on September 20, 2024 and is a solid version of the original hybrid Sublime released in December of 2023. That means it's going to be a much earlier and smoother rolling version.
Earlier this year, I made the switch from 15 pound to 14 pound equipment. Both the Sublime Focus and the Optimum Idol in this video are 14 pound balls.

The Storm Ion Max (not the Ion Pro Max, it's not an iPhone) released on September 20, 2024 and is a relative of the Ion Pro that was released in June of 2024. Often when you see a ball with the same name, it's got the same core and a different coverstock. In this particular case, Storm modified the Element Tour core by adding a disk at the bottom of the core to create the Element Max core. The ...

The weird music does not enhance your video.
Thanks for the feedback. Typically I can get an opportunity to record the videos with no music playing at the center. Unfortunately, this video had lots of music playing and had to do something to cancel out the music that I’m not licensed to play on TH-cam.
Great video once again. I have this ball for my first out the bag then the attention Star n the og Xponent.
sounds much better...
Thanks!
I have fixed the loud music that starts at 1:40 in the replacement video - th-cam.com/video/Pj0a2wv-BW0/w-d-xo.html - Sorry for the confusion!
I really want that Attention Star. One day
What type of bits are those you use on the fingers. I seen on soke Korean proshops using the same ones
I have a forester drill bit that I use for the fingers. I only have a 31/32 bit, but the far majority of fingers that I drill get inserts, so it works out well. I have found that I'm much more accurate drilling the fingers with those bits. I believe I purchased the bit through Bowler's Asylum and they specialize in overseas balls, it wouldn't surprise me that they're commonly used overseas.
Nice video. We are very close in our stats. I'm trying to find what balls i should be using. I had bought a few before I understood numbers. I need to sell some of mine and get different balls.
I don't know what all you've bought, but hopefully your PSO wouldn't have sold you balls that really overlapped too much. Rather than selling and buying more, if you do have some that overlap, you might want to give some surface changes a shot to get some separation from balls that are too similar. That's a much cheaper solution.
Would the hustle xray sit above a lightning blackout or below? In what condidtions would you use the xray over the lightning blackout? Thank you
Interesting question - the core numbers between the LBO and the X-Ray are very close. The LBO a being a shiny pearl is going to go longer and be more angular down lane than the VTC Solid on the X-Ray. Storm’s site has the Hustle X-Ray with an angular shape and good on dry lanes. I’ve used the X-Ray on a lot of different conditions and really haven’t seen anything that I would consider angular. As far as when to use one versus the other, if you needed something to get further down the lane - if the heads are really beat up and other things are rolling way too early, the LBO would likely be my choice. If you need something with a smoother shape that rolls a bit early and can control aggressive backends, then the X-Ray would be my choice.
Love watching ur videos. I also loved the original summit. I want to get this one but i have original Exponent. Are the Exponent and Ascent to close to have in same bag? Thanks
Thank you very much! The original Xponent had a 2.48 RG and a 0.042 differential in 15 pounds and had the Reserve Blend 701 solid coverstock. The Summit Ascent has a 2.46 RG and a 0.056 differential, which is not an insignificant amount. Overall, you should see more total hook with the Summit Ascent. I could see them both in a 6 ball arsenal, but probably not in a 4 ball arsenal, unless they were drilled with a different layout or you made a surface change to one of them.
Nice video sir I have The Road, og hy road and pearl. Threw my buddies lightning nice does this come off the friction more. Thanks 😅
I have the Reality. It seems to mee that the 901 cover on the PI is stronger that the S84 Response. I'm not a pro. I average about 165 to 172 in tournament competition such as the High Roller Military Tournament and the USBC Open National Tournament. If I practiced more and my muscle memory was locked- in, I would probably average at least 25 more pins overal per event. I think the Reality is still my go to ball in these events due to my lower speed and rev rate somewhere about 310. The Reality's Cover gets me down the lane and still preserves it's power at the back end and into the pocket. The Eternity PI's stronger cover would not really fit my game even though it's PSA and Diff is lower that my Reality. Any comments for me about my opinions? Very nice video by the way. Thank You.
So the 14lb might hook more or less
The RG of a ball indicates how a bowling ball spins - think of an ice skater with their hands outstretched (High RG) or tucked in closer to their body (Lower RG). The differential is the imbalance between the high and low RGs. The Ion in 14 and 15 pounds have a very similar differential, but the RG is higher on the 14 pound version. That typically means you'll see the 14 pound version go down the lane a little bit further than the 15 pound ball.
I really want that summit, blows pins up. I don't do well with the shiny
I started bowling 4 and half months ago, also throwing 14lb balls. I currently have an Attention Star and a Raw Hammer hybrid. I'm wondering which of the following balls would fit best with what I already have - Ion Pro, X-Cell, Optimum Idol Pearl or Summit Ascent. What would you suggest?
@bhartissimo - first off, welcome to the bowling family! In the grand scheme of things, 4 1/2 months isn't a very long time, so I want to caution you of falling into the "this bowling ball will fix everything" trap. If you're progressing along and have some good coaching that's a good start. In any 2 ball arsenal, there's going to be some pretty big gaps between balls. I think you're on the right track with the balls you're looking at and if you have a Matchmaker event (Storm's demo days) nearby, all of those balls will be available at the Matchmaker. Shops frequently run those toward the beginning of the season. I would certainly put the Ion Pro between those two and I'm a huge fan of it, so that would be a great ball if you feel like you need something between the Attention Star and the RAW. The X-Cell is definitely something that's going to roll earlier than the Attention Start and will have a much rounder shape, but will likely fit above the Attention Star. If you're struggling with heavier oil or needing something that hooks more than the Attention Star, the X-Cell would be the better fit.
The X-Cell looks really good off of your hand and i like the fact that you can move inside and the ball still holds to the pocket. What type of bowler would you recommend this ball for? I also throw a 14lb but, with two fingers, no thumb. Thanks for the review and ball comparison.
It is going to be good for a number of different styles of bowlers, lower rev strokers will be able to get good ball motion with straighter angles. The big concern I would have with a no thumb bowler is speed - which is one of the hardest things to get when bowling with no thumb. If you are speed-rev matched, the X-Cell could be great. If you're extremely rev dominant, I think you'll run into some issues with the ball hooking too much too early with the box surface. You may have to adjust up to a 4000 grit or a light coat of polish to get the ball down the lane a bit further.
Wow, I finally found a ball reviewer who throws the ball like I do. It seems like everyone else throws BIG revs which I don't. And I am also throwing 14 pounds so that seals the deal. I am going to check out all your past vids and of course I have subscribed. Thank you!
Great to hear! I’m glad you found me!
I agree. I just finished watching his Reality and Eternity PI comparison video. I'm a Senior Bowler.
Would the ion pro be a good 2nd ball if I have a lightning blackout. Started to bowl again after 15 year layoff and only have a lightning blackout. League play house shot only.
The Ion Pro will have less overall hook than the VEBO and a completely different shape, so it would definitely complement the VEBO.
How would this ball compare to a phaze 2, ion pro, and absolute power for league play. What other 2 balls would you choose to compliment tjis for league house shot.
A lot of it depends on your game and how you like to shape the ball. From a balancing perspective, if you’ve got a VEBO, you’ll probably want something a little stronger - something that digs into the oil earlier for times that the VEBO slides too long. I’m a big fan of the Absolute Power, you would have a different shape and a bit more overall hook. I would look for a symmetrical piece below it - i would look for something with a higher RG like the Road or Hy-Road.
How does this compare to the ion pro and phase II? For leauge play house shot is this good for the first game.
Is it good for the first game? As much as everyone hates to hear it, it depends. It depends on your style and the house you’re bowling in. As a general rule, yes, it would help you dig through the oil in the first game and help you control the back ends. I haven’t thrown the Optimum Idol in direct comparison of them but there are some significant differences. While they all have very similar RG values, the Differential on the Ion Pro is much lower than the Idol. The Phaze 2 is less than three Idol, but much closer. The Microtrax coverstock on the Idol is much stronger coverstock than the TX-16 cover (Hybrid on the Ion Pro and Solid on the Phaze 2)
Phase 2 all day
Would you recommend this for low rev,low speed bowler
It depends, how low speed and how low revs? What types of balls have you had success with?
@AlmostPerfection Is this the Phaze 2 replacement ball. Is Storm planning on discontinuing the Phaze 2?
@@garybryant1225 I don't have any insight into Storm's plans, I typically find out about them the same time you do. Historically speaking, balls that are still selling are not getting discontinued. I know we still sell several Phaze 2s every season, so I would be surprised to see it discontinued. The Ion Pro and the Phaze 2 are definitely different balls. They have similar RGs, but the Phaze 2 has solid coverstock with a much higher differential and is symmetric. The Ion Pro has a pearl cover, lower differential, and is asymmetric. Personally, I think there's plenty of room for both of them in the lineup.
Ion pro is a hybrid cover.
Wow, I'm glad I came across your channel. Of all the ball reviewers, your form is the closest to my game, but much more refined and consistent. Excited to follow and see what matches up with you best.
Welcome aboard! Glad you found me!
How do you make the track line on the lane?
They’re painstakingly done manually during video editing using Adobe After Effects. Learned how to do them by watching videos on how to create ball tracers for golf videos. I think they add quite a bit to the video.
Agreed, thanks! I have been using Inshot, and I had not tried using that program. My asking centers around training. I intend to trace my strike roll. Then, use the rinse and repeat method to improve my eye target training. Thanks again!
Good comparison - i wish I could see the box finish for the Attention Star. My attention star used to jump off the friction, but it has really calmed down.. Debating surface
You're correct, I didn't refresh the surface on the Attention Star. I haven't altered the surface at all, but the surface has definitely changed through lane shine through use. As a polished ball lane shines, it will typically get more traction in oil than it does with a fresh surface. If you're looking to get the snap back into your Attention Star, a quick resurface and finish with Step 2 or Reacta Gloss will get that back.
@@AlmostPerfectionWV interesting - thanks for letting me know… I was thinking of putting surface on it but that is a constant battle I’m not really interested in doing every 3-5 games
@@whitehh15 I like the reaction I get out of the Attention Star and where it fits n my bag, so I haven't considered putting surface on it. If you do put surface on it.- say 3000 grit, it will cause it to hook earlier and definitely not jump off the friction like it does out of the box. Getting it back to box surface with a sand and polish should definitely get you a lot more than 3-5 games.
Where do you put this ball in your bag? Can you throw this on a house pattern game 1?
@@jbin2756 I think you can throw the attention star on anything. It's very versatile - it I could only bring 1 ball, it would be the attention star. I know some people do consider it a ball down from something really strong first game, but I'm happy to adapt and play a slightly different angle to get the result I want
Nice video sir. All i throw is Storm question right now i only throw symmetric stuff Phase 2,Zen ,Zen Soul,Phase 5,Hy Roads. Got a ton more. The last asym i had was Dark Code this Dna Coil looks nice.
@anthonydorazio9650 I would definitely look at getting an asymmetric ball in your bag just to give you a slightly different look. I'd work with the Pro Shop Operator at a Storm VIP Pro Shop to match you up to the best asymmetric for your game. The DNA coil is a great choice for a lot of bowlers!
@AlmostPerfectionWV Yes both my guys in the pro shop storm staffers.😁👍🫵
Great shots. Do you do coaching out there in Nitro? I'd really like to work with someone to cleanup my approach and gain a little more consistency. My net average across the 2 fall leagues and my current summer league is around 220ish in Parkersburg.
We've been staying so busy working in the shop, it's been tough to get out to the lanes for much organized coaching sessions.
Just started bowling this year and currently throw 14. Really liking the comparisons as I’m considering adding new equipment, thanks!
Great to hear that you're finding the videos helpful!
Do you like the 14 lb hy-road better than 15 lb? I see the specs are a little different
I don't actually see a huge difference between the 14 and 15 in the real world. The core numbers between the 14 and 15 aren't huge, just 0.01 RG, which is insignificant. There's 0.009 difference in differential, which puts them both in the medium flare category, although at opposite ends. The big difference in the Hy-Roads is between the 15 and 16 pound versions with a 0.05 RG difference and a 0.012 difference in the differentials.
@@AlmostPerfectionWV I also prefer 14lb balls. I actually have a 13lb I bought used by accident and it strikes as well as a 15 without any deflection.
impressively consistent release
Thank you!

Great review. New subscriber.
Thanks for the sub!
I'd Be curious to see this video with the IQ Tour also reviewed. Good Job on the video.
Thank you! Unfortunately, I haven’t picked up an IQ Tour solid since I moved to 14 pounds yet.
I’m around a 300 rev guy. Curious how fast do u throw ur ball. I’m around 14 mph
I’m usually around 16.5 odd my hand, which would put most balls in the 14.5 to 15 range at the pins, where most scoring systems read the speed.
I'm really enjoying your reviews. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Man u are good. Love watching u throw the ball. 😊
Thank you!
Excellent job!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the review. I attended a clinic there last year with Mike Shady. I'll be considering purchasing these 2 balls.
That’s great! We try to get Mike to come down once a year or so. He’s an amazing coach! Thursday night, I shot 244 with the Hustle X-Ray in game 3. Definitely a great ball to have around.
I have the L-BO I hit it with 3000 pad and re polished it with tru cut polish and that has given me more miss room than the Reacta Gloss!
Love the tracers great video 👏
Great! Glad to hear you like them. They’re a ton of extra work, but I think they’re quite helpful.
Good comparison, I have the Road but from your perspective do you think they're too close to have both in the bag?
REX pearl and a 0.029 differential on the Lightning Blackout, REX Hybrid and a 0.045 differential on The Road on both 14 and 15 pounds. Probably not a big enough difference in a 4 ball bag, but maybe a 6, especially if you change the surface on one of them. I have hit the Lightning with a used 2000 pad to scuff up the polish a bit and really do like it. It does give it a bit of a different shape and makes a bigger difference between the two.
Next time I’m up visiting family in Princeton I’m gonna have to swing by and check out those lanes!
About an hour and a half from Princeton, but definitely worth the drive if you have the time!
Man your Road looks good. Mine i can’t get to hook in rite spot. What surface do u have on it. Should i resurface mine. Maybe 6 games on it. Thanks
I've left it at box surface but it probably has 40-45 games on it by now. If I see reaction like you're talking about, I'll resurface it down to 1000 grit, and refinish with Step 2 or Smooth Edge. I'm not a huge fan of ReactaGloss, but always give the ball a shot at box surface before adjusting anything.
Were you standing in the same spot dor both balls? How far right did the Surge line up vs the Hustle?
I tried to stay in the same area for comparison purposes. If I was bowling for scoring, I would have been 5-6 right with the Surge. Typically with the Hustle, I was sliding on 23, laydown on 18, 13 at the arrows, 8 at the breakpoint. I did move deeper with the Hustle that I would not have been able to do with the Surge. The Surge for the video, I just tightened up the line a bit and was sliding on 21-22, 17 laydown, 13 at the arrows with a breakpoint around 10. Very susceptible to flat 10s with my rev rate from there. Moving right and keeping the ball in front of me is where the Surge can shine.
Ordered a purple navy surge today. First low end ball I’ve purchased since I’ve started bowling more seriously. Definitely a play right ball for sure
Like you content but lighten up on the background music.
The Optimum Idol is a dangerous ball. I’ve been racking up 250+ games since I got it a month ago.
Thinking about this ball. Need something that holds the line without bellying out.
Depends on what you’re bowling on and what you’re using now. Unless you’re somewhat speed dominant, The Road is going to still need a little bit of room. Comparing to something like the Absolute Power, DNA Coil, or Summit Peak, you definitely wouldn’t have to give it as much room.
Some feedback: I love metal. Great track. Keep it as an intro. But very distracting over the voiceover. If the story/info is good, it doesn't need a soundtrack.
Thanks for the feedback… Unfortunately the audio track needed to be a little bit louder than normal because of the music in the center when I did the videos this time. I was able to edit some out in post production, but some of the music still came through. If I didn’t cover the center’s music up, the whole video could have been muted. I usually try to get the videos when they can turn the music off for me, but couldn’t this time.
I don't know who Patrick Dombroski is, but I thought it was funny lol
Thank you! Patrick Dombrowski is a PBA bowler who regularly posts videos on social media tripping 4 pins. In fact, when he posts videos without trip 4s, people want to know why. Some of his recent accomplishments are back-to-back Regional Player Invitational titles in 2023 and 2024 (2022 and 2023 seasons) and a second place finish in the 2024 Masters.
You do very good video, I love your video don't stop
Thank you so much!
Still learning how to deliver, definitely much stronger reaction than my hy-road. All my balls are 14#.
It is a very noticeable difference! Best thing you can do to improve your delivery and release is practice and the summer is a great time to do that.
