How to use the Mountain Radio - Rocky Talkie
What a great video. Your explanation and articulate presentation can definitely be helpful to anyone who is thinking about purchasing a set of these units. Clear as a bell.
So glad you found it helpful!
This is by far the best explanation for distance vs wattage. It doesn't make much sense why the FCC limits it to only 2 watts when the difference is so minimal until you start pushing 20-50 watts. also a small point for the FRS radio. because its only pushing 2 watts the battery consumption is much less while transmitting
Repeater-capeable?
They absolutely are!
ok, so this answers most of my question. However, I see that when choosing the repeater you only mentioned the 462 frequency, but not the offset. like when you transmit, the radio should switch to the 467 frequency. I know in most GMRS repeaters their offset is usually +5. is this an automatic thing that radio repeater channels do?
Great question, that's exactly how repeaters work! GMRS repeaters are a bit unlike amateur repeaters in that their offset is standardized. So our radios come set with the correct frequency and offsets!
Can that battery be charged while it's NOT attached to the radio?
That's a great question! The 5 Watt Radio's battery can only be charged while connected to the radio. We designed the radio to make it through most adventures without recharging. That said, for the extended trip, we recommend charging the radio with a usb battery pack like you would your phone or gps device. I hope this helps! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Can you send a link for that vehicle antenna? Did an internet search and couldn’t find anything. Thanks!
There are a number of antenna setups you can employ depending on your specific setup. We'd be happy to chat options with you at support@rockytalkie.com -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
What’s about MURs bands? Those are open use, lower frequency band with it an own set of rules and features. it may provide more range.
MURS is a great resource and definitely a good option for some applications! We found that the range difference isn't huge in most settings and the compatibility of more common FRS/GMRS radios works for us. Maybe one of these days MURS will become more common and we can work on a new radio! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
@ I found that lower frequencies seem to have an easier time through thicker terrain. There’s also a certain small effects you can get from lower frequency bands that people kinda don’t consider like the fact that lower frequencies like to “hug” the ground more (known for following the terrain more) and so on. Which I don’t know, I haven’t tested myself, and not even the point, but in theory, it could, could mean that if you have a man down on the ground with these lower frequencies, he might be more accessible on the radio too vs higher bands. I agree at 2W from a small HT with small antenna probably isn’t much between them… but it also can depend on your methods of testing and scenarios tested too.
This is off topic to the video. But how do you pressed the button while skiing with poles?
That's a great question! Most of us here at Rocky Talkie stop for a moment or use the pole's wrist strap to hold onto the pole while you use the radio. I realize this doesn't work in every scenario but I find I'm able to communicate before or after a particularly difficult feature. I'd love to hear if you think it'd work for you!
@ Thanks for responding! Just got back from the ski trip. The walkie talkies didn’t work as we intended but were very useful for communication like what lifts to go on and if anyone fell. We were mainly looking for something that you could talk well going down the hill. But this worked really well for other things we will use again!
If you have a repeater programmed will it automatically scan that also when you push the scan button?
It absolutely will! Great question!
Great video, thank you for the real world tests
So glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Youre inputting 3 on both which has made this a tad confusing. I have the same radio so for the output / input with a 100hz should I input 100 (Frequency) or the privacy code to the left corresponding to the frequency (ex 12 | 100hz)? I ask because the video shows what appears to be a frequency of 51.4. Also how do you account for frequencies with decimals if it is indeed what youll input into the radio?
Apologies for the confusion! Unfortunately my local repeater has relatively high input/output tones. Rather than watch us scroll through all of the tones, we opted to just show the action of flipping through a few channels for example. Since your tones will likely be different, your process will be a bit different. I do appreciate you sharing your experience and I'll do my very best to accurately show steps in the future! I hope this helps and if you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to us at support@rockytalkie.com! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Thank you. I watched your video discussing this. I have rockietalkie. Do you input the output/input hz listed on the repeater ( ex 100hz input / 100hz output) or do you input the code corresponding with the aforementioned (ex 12| 100 hz)
That's a great question! Your radio will list a channel number (like you mentioned 12) which corresponds with a frequency tone (100hz). In our user manual, we have a handy chart that lists all the input/output tones in hertz next to their corresponding channel number. rockytalkie.com/pages/user-manual MyGMRS.com will likely always list the frequency and you can quickly reference the manual for the tone in hz. I hope this helps and if you have additional questions, give us a holler at support@rockytalkie.com -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Very nice video.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Does the 5 watt radio allow for a Bluetooth connectivity? This feature would be nice for a hunting situations.
Hey Curtis, the 5 Watt Radio doesn't currently have bluetooth functionality but I've been passing this request along to our engineers so fingers crossed it makes it in someday. Thanks so much.for the suggestion! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team

Does it have any programmable ringtones? Or programmable roger beeps and does it have Bluetooth options
Great questions! We currently don't offer ringtones or bluetooth in the 5 Watt Radio. We opted to keep the radios as simple and easy to use as possible. That said, we're always working on new features so I'll pass along your requests to our engineering team! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
wow thats a lot of options. too bad its not bluetooth to change config and push my settings to my rocky talkie. like what if i want to add the noaa notifications but also boot without beeps. so much turning off and on again.
We've considered Bluetooth, and it's definitely something we're looking at for the future. The good news is, your radio will remember your settings even after power cycling. I find that most of my settings (like TX Beeps and enabling repeater channels) carry over through various activities. NOAA alerts on the other hand, I do turn off and on occasionally so hopefully you find this to be as simple as we do! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
I have e tried both here in Florida Everglades, lot of trees and found out they are about the same, I got 1 mile and little more on FRS and on GMRS a little more.2.5 miles. but GMERS are more expensive
It's interesting to hear your range experiences in those conditions, thanks for sharing! You might find that a higher gain antenna gets you just a bit more distance but it sounds like you're experiencing about what we'd expect! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
At the end of the video your partner has a small whip antenna installed on the radio, what model is that and where did he get that? - thanks
It’s called a Signal Stick made by SignalStuff. My question is will changing out an antenna like that change the IP67 of the radio?
@@JasonBBall-uz5dt I just ordered a 440 mono-band to peek at. Will let you know how the fit/sealing goes. My guess it will be closer to an IP65
Thanks! Yeah, let me know what it’s like. I talked to the guys at Rocky Talkie and they said it won’t affect the IP rating at all. I’m now curious about function of the Signal Stick over the provided antenna. I have Signal Sticks on all of my HTs so it’ll be cool so see how it compares in the GMRS world.
That's absolutely a Signal Stick and we love their products! We're hoping to release a mono band antenna by the end of the year specifically tuned for GMRS so stay tuned! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
@@rockytalkie1682 I recently bought the 440 monoband, haven't had a chance to test it yet though.
How do you turn the weather monitoring off once you turn it on
Hey Dave, that's a great question! To turn of the NOAA weather alert monitoring function, simply follow the same steps as turning it on. Start with your radio powered off and hold volume up while powering on your radio. You'll notice the cloud icon is now gone from your screen. I hope this helps! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Why not use the small whip antenna packaged with the gmrs 5 w.
Hey Sam, great question! We wanted to keep it as close of an apples to apples comparison as possible. Similar to how using the GMRS radio through a repeater wouldn't be as clear of a comparison, we kept the stock antenna on the 5 Watt Radio to isolate the power difference. I hope this helps! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
I need to know when to use the longer antennae that came in the box please.

Any suggestions for which of the two for my son and I when we go biking? Mostly gravel sometimes road.
We have a handlebar mount for our 5 Watt Radio and I personally love having my 5 Watt with me while mountain biking. If you'd like to discuss more pros and cons, feel free to drop us a line at support@rockytalkie.com -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Congrats team! Well done! In 2002 we worked with the park service on a project where we rigged a highline across the Black Canyon and then lowered a rescuer to the bottom. It was a great proof of concept but it underscored the challenges of rescues in the Black Canyon. Best to you all from an old SAR guy.
Question: Does this radio have a PTT port? If so, what is the configuation? Trying to determine what PTT interface need to go with to connect 3M Peltor or Safariland Liberator headset. Thank you - Jack
Our 5 Watt Radio absolutely has a PTT port! It's called a few different names and unfortunately there is some variability in the industry. If you write in to our suppor@rockytalkie.com email, we can share some accessories we've tested and know to work! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Got a set of these as a gift, can't wait to test them out the next time we climb at Seneca Rocks.
So I would not be able to up the wattage out put on these radios?
Correct. FRS radios are capped at 2 watts maximum power and our 5 Watt Radio has been tuned to what we think is an optimal power setting. It maximizes range while ensuring you get plenty of battery life on your adventures! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
5.13 free solo is the perfect way to describe that hoist rescue.
May God Bless you ALL, Abundantly!
1:11 great story of some who volunteer risking everything to save a life.
Mad props.
can this work together with the mountain radio? want one for the noaa weather service primarily (hurricane season and allat) but would also like to simply have a handheld radio for convoy driving and offroading use
Absolutely! The 5 Watt Radio is totally compatible with our Mountain Radio and makes an excellent off-road radio. You'll have to check out our 5 Watt Dash Mount and hand mic, it makes a really solid setup for inside and outside the rig. -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
This is in my backyard, gives me faith in humanity.
While I appreciate and think most of the climbing community loves it all: planet Earth's collection of mountains. There are definitely those Sierra homers that I've sometimes noticed (emphasis here) pn social media with a definite bias, loyalty, and almost arrogance that will remark the Rockies doesn't measure up. Nonesense! I've absolutely had the pleasure of watching climbers in Yosemite Valley, it's amazing. I've also had the experience of looping Gunnison and it's more impressive to me than Yosemite Valley in certain ways. The breadth of all the vertical walls, the mysterious, almost hidden location, and wilderness it symbolizes. Gunnison is part of the Rockies, a often misunderstood, massive mountain range, second largest on the planet. So much breadth to it once you learn its scope. I thought a place like Yosemite Valley was untouchable in certain ways then I hiked the Rockwall in the Canadian Rockies. Find out for yourself, but chances are the Rockwall will convert you. So much to discover for climbers in this huge range, from New Mexico to Northern BC, Canada (North/South) and Tensleep Canyon in the Big Horns of Wyoming to Hells Canyon and Seven Devils, Idaho (East/West). What a range. Awesome video.
👍🇺🇸🗽🇺🇸👍🙏🙏Wow!!
My sister is married to her brother. What an amazing story Becca was blessed beyond belief.
Such an incredible effort and rescue. You all are heroes!
I had a 3 watt Cobra mobile CB in my car . I was talking to a person I believed to be very close . I was shocked to learn he was in Long Beach Texas , I wae in Orlando Florida . Then my F meter pegged , A person in San Diego Calif. was lik next to me . I could recieve but not transmit , he had 20K watts .
Hey James thanks for sharing, we love the magic of CB and other High Frequency radios! Under the right conditions, those longer wavelengths can travel upward, bounce off the ionosphere and return to earth! This can give you some impressive range with relatively low power radios. The reason we tend to not see many HF handhelds is because the antenna would have to be very long to accommodate the wavelength effectively. I hope you still have your CB and get on the air sometimes! If you'd like to chat more, feel free to drop us a note at support@rockytalkie.com -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
