@@blaineca cool! I am from the bay and love the roots reggae. I guess this is why I got recommended the video! I am trying to DJ locally here in SJ
@@RGE_Music Is that San Jose? I think DJing Reggae does a lot more for society than many other things that we consider to be respectable! It is a tough business. Good luck to you I hope you can post some videos! I only post online but have known people that have their own soundsystems. I may invest in one soon.
@@blaineca That is correct! I am near the university so hopefully I can inspire some of the younger people to listen and come and enjoy some real music! I appreciate the love and support.
Sweet Virginia sounds like a rip of the Doobie's Listen To The Music. I've also heard that one of the Hollywood Stars was called in to play the lead guitar on some of the tracks? Not too sure about that
Hi Blaine. Eric Faulkner not only communicates, he hypnotizes his audience, both in the past and in the present.
Very good.👍🎸
@@suzanneespinola6509 thank you!
I'd love to read an Eric Faulkner autobiography
@@jeffjohnston7642 Eric has written one small book An Edinburgh Lad which comes available every once in a while.
Thank you!🙏 Nice sélection,👍 very good starter for à good evening✌️ enjoying summer heat!🔥keep fire burning! Big ups!
I got it. I loved it but did not like the early records with Nobby
I love this LP. I saw them in 85 in Adelaide and they were awesome
I truly appreciate you taking the time to make this video. I know this album is very different. Very 80's, lol. I know there was a lot of drama going on at the time with the band. I've listened to this album a lot over the years. I really do like it. I just like it least, lol. I really enjoyed listening to you. Thanks again Blaine.
The only thing I liked on this deep dive was the Ricochet snippet. This was definitely a step back for sure. Everything I hated about the '80's can be found on Breakout '85. Yikes.
They were trying to sound relevant by doing that 80s synthesizer sound with that bass slapping and plucking. The engineer was Julian Standen who worked with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Soup Dragons. The Japanese edition of the album has a different song Heartbreaker. George Spencer from Woodys Karu and Passenger days was on "drums/percussion" He was later deleted from the cover of the Japan front cover photo by using a toy car over his image. Previously, he was in the Rollers lineup with Duncan, Eric, Woody Alan, Derek, and Pat in Dublin. I was at that gig.
@@24hrs365 thanks for the info! Do you have the actual vinyl, and if so do you think it sounds better than what is here? I've noticed these small differences with the Japanese album. I hate to accuse the production of being poor if I just don't have good source material to listen to.
@@blaineca Yes, I think the sound quality is better compared to the tracks you played. It says produced by Bay City Rollers so maybe different members producing different songs.
I think the reason Ricochet is such a great album is Duncan Faure. The Rollers should have continued without Alan and Derek. By the end, Alan contributed nothing and Derek as a drummer was very basic. Duncan, Eric, Woody and a hard hitting drummer could have made it bigger. They needed a manager that believed in them as musicians
I don't know. In the interview with Stephan Galfas he said that when he met the band and saw them demoing stuff for the album he thought Alan and a Derek were great and compared them to muscle shoals rhythm players.
I'll give it a listen
By 1985 I was married and a new mom. I had outgrown my teenage crushes and didn't even listen to any of my BCR records. I don't even know if I still had them by that time. I know I dragged my entire record collection across the country when I left Massachusetts to move to California. But through changing locations and a time of being homeless my collection was lost along the way. All that survived was a couple of Queen albums. I had no idea the Rollers were still around. I don't know if I would've bought this if I had known. I started listening to them again a few years ago just to see if I had liked them just because they were cute and made my heart beat faster or if they really did have good music. Turns out they had some really good music. Erik's writing has gotten progressively better as the years have gone by. So now I must find copies somewhere so I can hear what I've missed. I knew there was more to them than just that hair. Lol! Thank you for doing this series. Without it I don't know if I would've discovered their last few albums. My last purchase was Elevator and the last time I saw them live was at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey in 1979.
Edit: I realized I spelled Eric's name like my husband spelled his. He was Danish.
@@julied6322 Congratulations on seeing them in 1979. I'm sure it would have been a great show. I saw them in 1977 and certainly wish I had known about Elevator etc. when they first came out. I would have loved to have seen them in that era. Thanks for watching and for comment!
Needs to played a few times it grows on you this album The wip what a song that is surprising i love this album congratulations Blaine love your shows .
I'm right there in talking only about stuff I like. I don't want to waste my time or the viewers' time by just talking trash about something. BTW, I keep forgetting that Breakout even exists! I've never heard it!
It's better than I thought. But I had low expectations! Some good songs on here though, I think???
Uuumm SoHo, I don't think so and the beginning of Hero, kinda hurts.
So what's keeping you from interviewing him?
@@fireballproductions4110 I've decided to not interview anyone even given the chance due to the politics around my channel. Not fair to them tbh.
@@blaineca What politics? I am confused with the politics thing.
It doesn't seem Pat's 23 weeks or so in the band were a picnic (and thats besides needing to keep his backside away from Tam...) and when you look at their German TV appearances just after the album was recorded, its pretty obvious he was already handed his walking papers as he is not featured in camera shots at all.
My first time hearing these songs thank you.
@@SusanOganessian-cv6zd my absolute pleasure!
Amazing album.
🙂💥👍💯😊
Holy Moses! Cliff Gallup. I knew there was something about you that I liked!
@@tommymaguire2839 I actually made a video last night about all of the music I grew up with and put a Gene Vincent tune on there. I actually have a mint copy of the album Cliff did with the 4 C's. Love his guitar work.
@@blaineca Very familiar with the 4 Cs. Only have a cd that someone made for me in the 90s. Cliff was THE best. That flat black Gretsch Duo-Jet and his fingers were pure gold.
@@tommymaguire2839 Yes I wish I could afford one of those guitars or even the Cliff Gallup model.
I love this album, and Strangers in the Wind.
I can tell you why the Bay City Rollers were special to me at least. The 70's were awful, the economy tanked, people were losing their homes and jobs, and here comes this happy, young, I even thought, "optimistic" somehow, group from Scotland, guys only a little older than me, they weren't rich, in fact, they were so poor they made their own gear, and their music, gave me JOY. I could be as "done" as could be, riding my bike home from school, or work, my little transistor radio strapped to the handle of my bike, a BCR song comes on, and suddenly, I have wings.
Wow!! Eric's voice on "Angel Angel"!! My heart!!
That synth sound sounds like a Moog synthesizer similar to one Stevie Wonder used a lot.
I think you are absolutely correct.
Hi Blaine…..I love spending time with you….. I’m just across the water in Buffalo🇺🇸
Loved this deep dive!
Would love you to do Breakout 85 some really good tracks on that album The gem being The Wip ,one needs to play breakout a few times good album it grows on you
I call this album the masterpiece my favorite roller album should have been a massive success.
Love these vids. Wish they had more albums so u cud keep making these. Maybe Breakout 85. Maybe some solo albums. Thanks for doing these Blaine.
@@thecaptain1194 I have done reviews of 3 of Eric's 4 collections on Bandcamp and Duncan's anthology. More to come in that category. I'm only slightly familiar with Les's output but will be working on that soon. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comments!
I totally understand where you're coming from; the guitar work is fantastic! My choices are exactly the same--Life On The Radio being number one for me! Not too sure about Breakout either. Looking forward to whatever music you post about...
@@michelerosevear7466 fantastic that we would choose the same tunes!
@@blaineca yup...we both have great taste in music, I think!❤
Eric at least wasnt really into the sound of Breakout either. He said to me when asked about it, "It sounds like someone got a drum machine for christmas." I do like a few of the tracks such as Make my body work. Well done on the deep dives.
Makes sense as the tapes were erased and I'm not sure who did the production and re-recording of everything. Anyway, it will be interesting listening to it again a few times.
I also enjoy Make My Body Work, but it falls apart outside of that for me. But I can't tell if it is the production, the crappy recordings I have, or the overall bad state of affairs. I'm mostly disappointed that Ian was there but he didn't write anything! I enjoy his songwriting!
Just digging into this clip. Really looking forward to hearing your opinion. I've loved this since that warm day in July 1977 when I bought it. I'm hoping you mention the "Sweet Virginia" fade out.....
Sorry to disappoint you on that one but I hope you enjoyed the vid!
Great eep dive Blaine. I like watching your posts. Very informative .
@@DebbiGibson I'm glad. Thank you!
This is my all time favourite album.I discovered Elevator in the 90's in my dad's record shop. I no longer lived near him but he stocked it because I was a fan in the 70's. I remember the first time I played it, I was blown away!!! It was on a level with the music of the Beatles. The teeny bopper band had grown up and so had I, but I will always have a soft spot for their earlier stuff too.
Awesome video. And I see you saw Fils latest analysis video. Of the glasbury festival. Good comment 👍And I am also glad that michelerosevear. Got to talk to Eric himself. Maybe some day you’ll get to talk to Eric also.👍
One of my favourite Roller albums. Eagles Fly, Maybe I'm a Fool To Love You and the title track are outstanding.
Bought the album from the cutout bin when I was 9 years old in 83 and it's been one of my favorite Rock albums since!
Will you be covering the Breakout album?
@@24hrs365 I'm going to try.
Great job dude!
Thanks for the shout-out, Blaine❤; I feel so honored to have been the first to have a conversation with Eric...he's the most humble, down-to-earth, beautiful person; can't wait to meet Duncan! I do hope you get to talk to Eric at some point--that would be so interesting to hear your perspective. Voxx--completely agree with everything you mentioned; I'm partial to Soho, Inside A Broken Dream and, of course, Rebel, Rebel! Thanks again for your covers/ how-to's/originals--you rock; glad to have discovered you on TH-cam. The BCR/Rollers unite us fans like no other band--We'll never let the music die; KOR!🎸🎵🎶
I've always loved Eric's guitar tone...wish I would have asked him about it. I've got to start writing things down in case I get the chance to talk to him again! It's amazing that they were able to accomplish all that they did in such a short time; underrated, of course. It's a good thing that Les was "one-take Les"...don't know how else they would have been able to do it! Thanks again for another great review...
I "inherited" this album from my sister (she's 6 yrs older than me) in 1981 after leaving it behind when she left home after getting married! It's great album and Eagles Fly is a masterpiece. I totally agree with your song choices btw. Great video, greetings from the UK
Elevator...one fantastic album...thanks for another great review, Blaine! I wish they would play it on my classic rock radio station...
The harmonies....oh my god!!! great stuff.
I had Elevator and Ricochet before I knew about Voxx. I met Eric afterwards at a New Rollers gig and I brought along that album to be autographed. He read the track listing and said he really liked Washington's birthday.
@@24hrs365 wow interesting! Thanks for sharing!
About R an R Band.... BOSTON's core of Tom Scholz and Brad Delp would have been proud to have created that one themselves
@@TomDavisVideo I hadn't thought of that!
Should have been a #1 ... and should be a staple on classic rock radio
Thank you for reminding everyone that they were more than just a "cute" band. I enjoyed all of their music over the years, and it's good to see other people appreciate it too!
