My aunt had a flat above the offices of Thomas Wallace, Flower Importers, from 1947 to 1970. It was at 41 Wellington Street, about 50 yards from the Opera House. Trucks bringing in vegetables from the countryside were allowed to start unloading at midnight. Trading went on throughout the morning until bells rang at 11-00 AM to signal end-of-trading for the day. Bow Street Police Station, original home of the Bow Street Runners, the first police force, was directly across the street from the Opera House. It was the only police station in London without a blue light over its entrance---allegedly because Queen Victoria objected to seeing it when she exited the opera.

Thank you Erica for your wonderful video. This is one of the few videos that show people that “inside” the beautiful buildings exists a wonderful art, musical and culinary culture. In 1971-72, I saw over 50 operas in the Vienna Staatsoper (all in standing room for about $1 (10 aus schillings); today about 13 to 18 euros) per opera. If tickets are difficult to get consider standing room. Add to your list: musical concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in the Musikverein; and talking a quick look inside the National Bibliotek in the Hofburg. Thank you again, Erica. 😊

France is so spectacular, is in a league all it's own, Paris is spectacular & Montmartre is so spectacular!! I have stayed there numerous times & I fell in love the first day I arrived there. Each time I plan to return to France/Paris, I will always stay @ Montmartre. It's a wonderful Parisian arrondissement, it really is & contrary to popular belief, it's not dangerous, dirty or overrated. On the absolute contrary! France & Paris specifically, do cop a negative wrap @ times, but in truth, France & Paris could never be overrated, for France is an incredibly beautiful & wonderful country & Paris, is such an amazing city. So much so, that each time I'm in Paris, I always hear people who say they didn't want to visit, are now so glad they did & they've even fallen in love with this beautiful city & it's not hard to see why. Paris does have that special something & it does possess the "wow" factor. No doubt about this.

Charles Aznavour… Je vous parle d’un temps que les moins de 20 ans ne peuvent pas connaitre… “I'm talking to you about a time that those under 20 cannot know..” Say that again ! My grandmother lived from 1947 to 1989 on the Butte Montmartre, my father from 1947 to 2013, me from 1962 to 2022. She was a gallery owner, my father was a painter of Montmartre, I am a painter from Montmartre. Lots of tourists, I preferred Montmartre of Maurice Utrillo, than that of Emilie Poulain… when you speak to Jeannette (la blanchisseuse des peintres) who washed Picasso’s clothes and knew Maurice Utrillo. Le Lapin à Gilles ? Rue Saint Rustique ? le Saint Pierre ? Le château des Brouillards ? Etc

Flatbreads have a long history in the Mediterranean region and the Middle East. In particular, the “idea of rolling bread with a filling is very ancient in Turkish culture” says Mary Isin, author of Bountiful Empire: A History of Ottoman Cuisine. During the mid-17th century, the 4th Earl of Sandwich traveled to Turkey and other regions in the Ottoman Empire, which may explain where he allegedly got the idea to ask a club or restaurant server to make him a sandwich back in London.
