    Those collections look so good. I kinda like the aesthetic of small collections, mostly because it's hard to distinguish stuff at bigger ones, but 62 is kind of a sweet spot where everything feels unique, and like, I definitely wish better to older consoles especially, but uh yeah part of me likes when catalogs are tiny! Lol. I'm envious of every one of you, as I own not a single pcfx thing, but I love the aesthetics on general of it all. I guess it's a similar aesthetic to the Japanese Saturn.

      @@pcfxfanclub the one I found was from at least 10 years ago, unfortunately compared to the other fighters I had back then she was very underpowered, so needless to say she wasn't very good! Will check HF98 and see if that's just how characters are balanced there.

    I'm a Spanish native, so I'm no stranger to playing games with a language barrier. I brute forced myself into learning English by playing games as a child. Thing is, many games I played as a child I revisited later, and there's so much you miss. And yeah this feels like one of those. I wish brute forcing myself into learning Japanese was as "easy" as English lol, maybe it was the power of youth mixed with the fact that with English I didn't have to learn a new writing system, just the rules were different. I'm awful at kanji is what I mean! I just hope I can one day give a fair try to these games especially. If there's one thing I love it's RPGs and this console is full of that.

      Now about Sparkling Feathers, and this is where I can only judge by you guys' anecdotes and take, which I mean not saying it's wrong, just that we all have our own experiences and opinions on things. I like what they were trying to do, but I also don't think it was the best approach, but maybe it was due to limitations of some sort. Like, they wanted to give weight to the relationships you make through the game, and that's good, but I kinda don't appreciate when the game pulls limitations that you have to sort of guess through the game. And this is where of course I have to say, I'm judging by what I understood from your experiences with the game, because the game might have hinted it through the playthrough but I would only know by playing the game, and knowing what the characters are talking about. Like, how clear is Garnet's importance on the story, and what sort of importance should his relationship with another character have in the plot, and how that affects things. Those kinds of things, they might not make the whole thing bad, but it kinda make or break the story for me. And of course, the only real way to know is being able to read.

    • @pcfxfanclub
      @pcfxfanclub วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, absolutely. That's always the danger of playing these games this way lol. This is Ben writing, but I do love the game, but I also had quite the journey with it so there's probably some bias there. I'm really glad I played it, and if you're just curious about game design and how different games do things, Sparkling Feather is a great experience. Though my understanding of relationship-based RPGs is fairly limited, it could be one of those cases where Sparkling Feather just happened to be the one I played so it's what connected with me most.

    It was nice meeting you out in Portland, Ben. As I mentioned to you at the booth, I only joined the PC-FX owners' pool this past spring and it was a nice surprise to hear that there's such a passionate community out there for the console. It's a shame that there aren't more people aware that there was a successor to the Turbo-Grafx that we never got in America. I couldn't imagine that there would be near as much apathy if gamers learned out there was another Atari after Jaguar or Sega after Dreamcast. I don't know about other West Coast cons, but I'm sure several of the East Coast ones would have space for a PC-FX panel. (It sounds like something that would be in the wheel house of Hartford, Syracuse, or Long Island. RetroWorld Expo in Hartford is the only place I've seen the PC-FX on the vendor floor.)

    Very interesting episode with tons of insightful input about hardware and software development from David Shadoff, not just the PC-FX but the PC Engine as well. Whenever Japanese retro computers come up as a topic, like with the Sharp x68000, PC-88 and PC-98, I'm even more invested. A PC-FX ODE is on the top of my "most wanted ODE" list, especially since there's no FPGA core and basically only Mednafen is an alternative for software emulation. Meaning, playing on a standard defintion CRT without original games requires a lot of hoops to jump through. I do have Terraonion's Super SD System 3 for the PC Engine mentioned here, and it's been a lifesaver for exploring the PC Engine CD-ROM2 library in a proper CRT setup. I have several original games with audio skipping issues on my Duo-R, and I'm always at a loss whether it's the laser, the discs or some combination thereof that's causing issues.

    • @pcfxfanclub
      @pcfxfanclub หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for commenting! Something like the terraonion for PC-FX would be really nice. The fact that it plays cdrs so easily makes it less required, but the lasers are all at risk of failing at this point.

    • @Mogura87
      @Mogura87 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@pcfxfanclub All the PC Engine CD-ROM2 variants (add-ons and Duo systems) have no protection against CD-Rs either, but my system isn't any less picky about burned CDs either. I do have many games that play flawlessly, but others have consistent problems with CD audio drop out, typicallly music and voiceovers during cutscenes. In addition to my ODE I think the next step is to get a MiSTeR set up as I hear the PC Engine core there is excellent.

      Hey PanRhei! At the moment Archive.org is down so it's not accessible but, as far as we're aware, it should come back up. There's a great question about where else this sort of content should be stored, but we haven't done a lot of research on what other options are available. A copy is stored locally, though, and should be back online

    Great discussion lads. Whilst I don't have a way to play it currently, it's a game that actually sounds right up my street with some interesting takes on some mechanics.

    I really liked this "deep dive on a specific game" format, maybe we can do more? I know its time intensive tho. I really liked that Filler brought up that information disadvantage primes you against the experiences, I feel similarly but that you guys are combating that. I like that you are bring the pcfx to the convention, wish I could go, hopefully I can support the pcfx pamphlet you are making. You guys totally described my experiences with tactical or strategy rpgs, and just randomly playing Japanese games and the thrill of figuring out how to play when I don't read Japanese. I look forward to looking at your guide and trying the game out. I haven't been on the discord recently, hope you guys had good summers.

    Another great episode. Thank you for doing these and the art book you shared is awesome. So that was a preorder item or collecters edition item originally?

      We haven't gotten complete confirmation, but when we were doing general research into the type of material it was and how it labels itself, that seems to be a common way it was distributed. I'm currently looking into another event that I believe I saw some settings material may have been distributed for various PC-FX games. From what I can tell, Sparkling Feather was announced at that event, but I don't know 100% for sure yet.

    Only just discovering your content via the Mr. Jakes video, since I love his stuff, but also wanna thank you for the snippets of gameplay footage when y'all talk about a game. It goes a long way and there are some really big channels that seem to ignore its significance :')

      Thanks for watching! What type of gameplay footage did you find most helpful? We're sort of re-evaluating the amount of editing we're planning on doing to hopefully increase the number of videos we can put out, so it'd be helpful to know what you found most valuable.

      @@pcfxfanclub Well in general, every time you mention a game, you show some gameplay of it, and it goes a long way because even just a few seconds paints a good picture of the game for most gamers I would think. The part that stood out the most was Boundary Gate and how you mentioned the "normal dude/dad", it was really useful seeing him to see what you were talking about.

    I think all these bad decisions NEC made is to kill off the gaming division of the company. Why didn't they make the PC Engine games compatible with the PC-FX.

      What year did they kill off the gaming division? And PC Engine support would have been great for the core PC Engine fans for sure! Though it's likely it wouldn't have made a big difference in how the system played out.

      @@orlandoturbo6431 Gotcha! You're talking about hardware. And yeah, PC-FX was the end of their hardware run. However they did do a bit of publishing on Dreamcast so I'd highly recommend taking a look at those games too!
