In the Gospels, Jesus repeatedly healed those who were disabled, including the blind, the deaf, and the paralyzed. His actions were not only physical healings but also deeply spiritual, offering dignity, inclusion, and restoration to individuals who were often seen as less than others. For instance, in Matthew 9:32-34, when Jesus healed a mute man, he did so not just to fix the man’s physical condition but to show that every person, regardless of their physical limitations, had inherent value and worth in the eyes of God. For Labongo, a person suffering under exploitation due to his disability, we can draw a parallel to the Biblical truth that Jesus sees the person behind the condition. If Jesus were physically present in this situation, he would, without hesitation, stand for Labongo's dignity, freedom, and healing. Jesus would not see Labongo as someone to be taken advantage of, but as a child of God worthy of respect and love. This is a call for us, as individuals and as a society, to approach others, especially those with disabilities, with a spirit of compassion, to reject the harmful attitudes that dehumanize, and to recognize that true worth is not found in physical ability but in the intrinsic value every person holds. Just as Jesus liberated individuals from the constraints imposed by societal ignorance, we too are called to liberate others by fostering understanding, inclusion, and love. By doing so, I reflect the light of Christ’s example and stand against the harmful stereotypes and stigmas that continue to hurt vulnerable people like Labongo.
