You couldnt play the 3 fours because you needed a card to discard.
You don't need to discard if you meld your remaining cards. From the Bicycle set of rules: "A player need not make a discard in going out; they may meld all of their remaining cards."

Wow, Mr. Gamer, I hate to say this, but I would absolutely DESTROY YOU if we played Canasta together. I am afraid you don't understand the game at all. I'm talking, every hand the score would be about 3000 to 500.

How do I play Hand and Foot Canasta?
Got here from Boardgamegeek. Great review! Cansta, IMHO, is THE great classic traditional card game! As a card game, it ranks only behind Tichu among my personal favorites. If you have six players, Pennies from Heaven is a great 6-player variant with its rules available online at Pagat.

2 player canasta
Thanks for this! I'm always looking for fun single player games....because I uhh....have no friends. Will be giving this a try. If anyone has any other single player games to recommend, I would love to hear about them.
Jamie Carrafa, Thanks for the comment. Some other great solo games I can recommend are: Race for the Galaxy (you need the expansion The gathering storm), Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, Mage Knight, and my all time favourite Ambush! if you are able to find it on ebay by Avalon Hill (a world war 2 solo game). Because I too do not have friends :)
