Can you fully define CAD geometry with only 1 mate?
A few months ago I was pondering over the idea of whether there would be a type of geometry where you could use a single mate in Solidworks to fully define 2 bodies to each other. I thought it was an interesting puzzle to try to solve so I decided to share it here

My favorite number is 8, and this year is 2024 (a multiple of 8) so I thought I would take the opportunity to make this video as an investment for the future. I make some guesses about what the world will look like in 2032 from the perspective of an Engineer working in Tech. In 8 years, I plan to make a follow up and see how close or how far off I was. at 4:05, how did you created that open contour on cylinder since you can wrap/scribe only closed contours??
Bruh... it randomly popped up and while I was listening to this I thought this song is fire, let me check the artist. I Was very (pleasantly) surprised to see who the artist is. Good job dude!
Genus - thanks for the video!
Remove the controller and get that little thing inside that rattles and the plastic, remove it and give a little sandpaper...that's my two cents
You're right I should!
How did to wrap a open contour.. As "j" is a open contour..
It's possible from version 2023 onward as far as I recall
If you make another booth it would be great if you could male it 2x2 as like a cozy office room✌
2x2 of which units? meters?
what a great video, didnt expect it to be packed with all that info big uppp
Thankyou! glad you liked it
Any single surface that's not a revolved feature can fully lock in 1, i think
Yes you can use lock but that's not a geometric mate really
@@JamesDeBono Here I'm using "lock" interchangeably with "fully mated". Are you using "lock" as in an anchor mate? To my first comment I should add: ... and as long as it's not a plane or an orthogonally extruded surface by 2d curve. Those two plus the revolved surface make this a decent definition of a fully interlockable surface mate. But then there's also helical sweeps, that wouldn't fully mate in one. There might be a few other cases I cant imagine at the moment.
Funny. I was just modeling Bolt Carrier cam path and I ran into same problem.
If you're like me you probably never imagined it would be as complicated as it is haha
How did you wrap an open contour? Thanks in advance
That’s why you 3D print it 😂😂
Bro.... your new timezone is killing me. I can't watch your streams :(
Foam thing under bridge should be taken away!
Really? I though it was too allow it to move without scratching?
@@JamesDeBono it's impeding the sound transfer, from bridgeto body!
I just did my Strat with just a bridge and neck pickup, wired like a Tele. I love it.
Its weird only neck pickup you shoild instead install one humbucker on bridge
It had a humbucker on the bridge but I don't really like that sound
I guess in general the surface needs to have normals with components in all 3 axes (position) and cannot be a revolution surface (rotation)
Perfectly circular or conical revolved surfaces will work with a concentric mate!
Would a counter sunk n-face pyramid polygon mate and be constrained by a single face? Meaning, instead of a cone like your example, a pyramid.
I guess if it's a pyramid then it would be multiple faces right? So it would need multiple mates
@@JamesDeBono oh is that how it works? Interesting 🤔
@@tadilaco Yeah I should have mentioned that the objects do not collide. They can go through each other. So if you only mated one face of the pyramid they could still slide through each other
John Frusciante's piece at the end was cool
Heyyyy I think you are the first person to recognize what it was!
Looking forward to the full song cover!
@@sedoyotec The full song doesn't even exist haha. I have thought about trying to finish it in my own way though
It's good to see you recording again!
Thanks man! still a bit tricky in this temporary apartment. I want to stream as well but this place is on the bottom tier internet plan so it's not ideal 😅 hopefully moving soon
Legend, thanks 🙏

Touch screens and AI are already making many tasks much easier and there's not really any reason to go back. I think from here the general population tech literacy is going to regress again and don't expect it to ever recover.
Yep! AI is here and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Adapt or be left behind. It's an interesting point there will be less need for us to understand topics deeply. Who knows what our lives will look like going forward
I don’t want Apple to change they are perfect the way they are.
You're in luck haha
Is climate change really caused by carbon emissions? I thought it made the earth greener because plants consume carbon dioxide.
I'm no authority on this topic, you can find much better answers than mine online. My understanding is that you are right in that plants consume it but it also creates a green house affect which is what causes climate change. Thanks for watching the video 😊
It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out lol. In terms of the ai in music, it's already incredibly pervasive. Lots of generative music apps I've investigated. Tried a few and dropped it. I'm not even messing with instruments much these days, moved into microphone based work. AI will struggle with that style. I would love to have an AI to help automate my daw for me so I can focus in the stuff I actually enjoy doing haha
Yeah helping to reduce the friction of the technical stuff while allowing you to be creative would be nice I think
worked flawless, recommend the technique :)
Having had 10 months worth it, would you now say it's a good purchase or not?
I still have it! So that's saying something. I used it at a gig recently and it sounded and played great. I would say, if you don't care about the höfner logo, then get a Harley Benton. I think it's probably better quality and cheaper
The fact that you decided to use the neck pickup rather than the bridge, unlike most other single pickup guitars, is the killing point in my opinion. When we play an acoustic guitar, we play somewhere between the middle of the guitar body and the neck. If you were to play with only one pickup mounted very close to the bridge, you would never get the most natural and smooth vibration, even if you were playing close to the neck.
When you say "killing" do you mean that in a good or bad way?
@@JamesDeBono I'm sorry for confusing you because my English is not good. Of course, I meant this in a good way. To exaggerate slightly, I think that the piezo pickup integrated into the bridge may sound like wooden chopsticks hitting each other rather than a natural guitar sound. Assuming you're picking open strings, let's say the guitar strings vibrate 3mm wide at the 12th fret, how much can they vibrate near the bridge? I don't think it will ever be natural. I don't know if they're intentionally pursuing that unnaturalness, but if not, it literally wouldn't be natural.
I’ve got the same noice in my one think only one piece of something
Yeah it's pretty annoying. I'm tempted to open mine up and try to get it out
Thanks mate!
Thanks for the video. Malcolm Young removed the pickups in his Grestch and I appreciate that simplicity.
That's cool! I never heard about that thanks
On the first approach wrap example, wouldn't that be representative of a real cut if the end mill was much smaller than the channel and following the perimeter?
You could cut it that way with a smaller bit like that but then the edges wouldn't be parallel to the pin from the bolt action mechanism
Welcome back mate!
Sorry I didn't see this, Thanks :)
That's a big move. Have fun downunder
Let's go! Glad to see you are settling in :)
can you Wiring...Single Pickup Activ . 1 volume 1 Tone ?
It is possible to do that as well!
@@JamesDeBono my homemade electric guitar that me and my grandpa built when I was 11 I'm 20 soon to be 21 now has only 1 pickup in the neck with a volume and tone and some flatwound strings me and my grandpa built my guitar from scratch using hand tools in his garage my grandpa has a degree in woodworking and electronics we put the leather on after seeing Waylon's telecaster but yeah that's my guitar I use with my modified Gibson ga5 LP reissue amp Mojotone is from the same state as us so we used there parts to upgrade my amp The only things extra we added was a another knob to control the echo from the built in tape loop machine we added for slapback echo my gear setup is my homemade electric guitar plugged straight into my modified Gibson ga5 LP reissue amp I don't use pedals
Another (potential, I don't know anything about these things) reason for why it might be important, if you upload a CAD design like this, wouldn't it be possible (for one reason or another, user error?) to make the CNC machine think that it should cut at an angle?
Depending on the machine and the way the path is generated, yes!
Another reason for why this is worth doing is that you're finding possible bugs (or improvement opportunities for the CAD makers) that can potentially cost a lot of money for someone in the future.
100% I tend to do things like this in my spare time to improve my skills if I don't think that it's necessary for the project
With you all the luck, man!
very nice setup
Thankyou! I hope my new set up will be even better!
I resonate with what you said and it gave me a bit of insight into my own stuff gl on ur start ap man and keep posting❤

Man your move is coming up broham. Fingers crossed that you can get moved and situated quickly.
I'm currently writing this comment at the airport waiting for my next leg on my way to Aus!

Thank 😊 I hope it wasn't too boring
@@JamesDeBono ye nah its long... And weirdly personal especially since i watched you model and then you pour your heart out next vid but honestly it adds such a nice personal flavour its captivating (im tempted to say make a podcast but that shit is too oversaturated)
@@certopacket1312 I agree about the saturation. I just want to keep people updated and have this to look back on. It's okay if people skip this and wait for another modelling video
sick setup, also do you do any CAM ?
Not so much to be honest. I've done a bit in my current job but not in Solidworks. I really want to buy a CNC router though so I will surely get more into it
hey nice job you can simplify the tree with just 2 feature for the shape here how I made it th-cam.com/video/828rV3hNJ_k/w-d-xo.html
Did you use a swept cut?
yes, I used a sketch instead of an object allowing me to obtain this shape@@JamesDeBono
@@lego37. Interesting, I did that in the first video and the result had intersections
My first "for fun" solidworks project after my first semester of CAD classes was to replicate a Sten MK2. I figured it was fairly simple and would be fun to model. I ran into this exact problem with the slot in the receiver. I was humbled as I thought my CAD-fu was too weak to replicate this very simple mechanism. Good to know that over a decade later this same problem is still stumping so many engineers!
It's a surprisingly tricky one I think!
No way in hell Rhino+Gh is beaten by NX.
Try fit spline and choose your tolerance.
Fit spline works but the swept cut with body does not. It's too glitchy
Why not verify the result by using Rhino where this is a breeze?
Rhino is great for some things like surfacing but falls behind most other CAD software due to the lack of a feature tree in my opinion
